Wayne's Tank Journal - Current 90 on Page 5

Hello all! To clean up my signature I am going to start this tank journal and one day be able to look back at the beggining and smack my forehead saying "what were you thinking"

Some pictures from the beginning:

Then I traded in the Saddlebacks . They were to aggressive with future livestock for this size of tank.

Feeding time

When feeding make sure the Brittle Star gets his share, or he might "take" matters into his own hands...er arms.

Hi Wayne it's always nice to see a new member from Edmonton. Good start to your tank. I've smacked my head more than a couple of times!

Well it was an exciting show when the Brittlestar tried to crawl into my Dusky Jawfish home... The Starfish went in for a few seconds then quivered and backed out  Hasn't made that mistake again!

Wayne 08-11-2010 12:01 AM

I just finished with the stand modifications:

I chopped her down a few inces, reinforced it a little more, new 3/4" plywood top, redid the upper and lower trim and finally threw a coat of paint on it. Still have to do new foam for the sump and display this week and drill the sump holes.

Looking good so far. Curious, what is the epson salt for ?

Wayne 08-11-2010 12:46 AM

Its a poor mans Magnesium Sulphate Heptahydrate... My levels were low... When its done I am going to get the proper stuff from one of those bulk supply places

Next things on the list are some more Blue Green Chromis (thinking a small school). Then get the sump redesigned and plumbed so I can get all the equipment out of my display tank :)

CherylMcKay 08-23-2010 08:28 PM

Sorry for maybe a silly question, but... Why do you put egg crate in the bottom of the tank??

Wayne 09-12-2010 03:08 PM

Egg crate is so the live rock doesn't sit on the glass. Because the rock doesn't sit completly level but rather on jagged points, it can crack the glass if you have lots of live rock. I thought it would be better safe then sorry :)

Uhmmm... is that Aptasia? Eating your shrimp?

Wayne 09-13-2010 02:55 AM

Yup... Partick you just made me realise I have Aptasia :(

I guess its time for the war to begin... I think I am going to try some lemon juice with a needle I only have about 5 of these. Maybe some Peppermint shrimp to maintain control :)

bignose 09-13-2010 04:08 AM

Get them before they get out of control! A needle and some lemon juice worked for me. What kind of shrimp was that anyways?

Wayne 09-14-2010 12:00 AM

I counted the tank this mourning and there are 7 that I can see. To be honest they really haven't spread, some did grow as big as 1.5". I was just planning on injecting them directly with that sodium hydroxide stuff, but I have concentrated lemon juice at home which I may try first.

I just started feeding Piscine freshwater mysis shrimp. They are huge suckers! To big for most of my fish :)

The every single one opened up the next day! At this exact moment every single head is open too! Even the ones I got today from you theres 2 open and 2 almost open! I am now on the edge of being a zoaholic, they are just so simple

reefwars 10-17-2010 10:27 PM

welcome to the club lol now if you think they are simple wait untill you pay a few hundred for a colony to have it die off, thats the thing about zoo's theres so many of them and they all require something different, for the most part they are fairly easy but as you get into it youll start buying nice zoas and some get lost some melt away and some even overtake your tank:) by farrrrrrrrrrrrrrr my favorite species:):) tanks looking good buddy, when i make some green zoa frags this week ill put one aside for you:)
