My 135g setup w/ pics

Hi everyone. Ive been reading up for a while now and have finally decided to take the step and create my own piece of ocean paradise:razz:. Im picking up my 135 gallon tank and stand tomorrow, and I cant wait to get them. I have been slowly purchasing some items for the tank, and will post pics tomorrow. I will be setting up a reef tank, and thoughts and comments really will help.

Think carefully about what you want to keep in your tank. You will have to buy the appropriate equipment for the livestock needs (ex. lighting, water flow). Carefully planning this can save you money in the long run.

What are you planning on keeping in your piece of ocean paradise?

I am planning on creating an sps reef tank. I got my tank this morning (thanks Michael), and spent the better part of the day cleaning and getting the plumbing for the sump in. Just heading out now for a few pieces I need to complete the plumbing.

So I finally figured out how to post pix. Here are a few of my 135 when I first got it upstairs, and after cleanong and painting it.

Cant wait to finish plumbing the sump and testing everything out.

Looks sweet! Can't wait to see what you'll do with the tank.

If I may, one thing I would suggest is to ditch the bioballs. They're soo 1995  plus they will have a tendency to collect a lot of gunk and eventually become a nitrate factory, which you don't want. You shouldn't need the bioballs if you have a healthy collection of live rock in your display tank an possibly some in your sump.

I was wondering about those. I got them with the tank, and havent cleaned the sump yet. Thanks for the info, I will be tossing them.

:redface:Its been a few looong weeks of waiting, but I finally got all of the pipes I needed to finish plumbing the sump. I will be water testing tomorrow. Really hope everything is good.

sean2477 07-02-2010 05:07 AM

I ran a leak test and found 1 in the return pipe leading to my external pump . I went to LFS to talk to the guy there and he pretty much sold me on an internal pump. I figure if it goes, better to go in the sump than on to my floor. Not only am I now going with an internal pump, but Im also going to run my pipes differently, and add a few unions and run more flexible piping. In the long run, makes it easier to take apart and reconnect. Should have it re plummed in the next week or so, work permitting.

Thank you

Ive picked up 50 lbs of live rock off of someone shutting there tank down, and am planning on getting another 100 lbs or so. Ive never really thought about DIY rock.

sean2477 07-07-2010 04:18 AM

I FINALLY finished plumbing the tank, and after the second leak test, NO LEAKS!!! I just want to say I HATE PLUMBING, but its finally done. Im picking up some sand from my LFS this weekend, and adding what little rock I have. Ill post more pics this weekend.

If your interested in DIY rock I'm doing most of my tank with the DIY stuff. I also made a 45 min tutorial on how to make the rock.

sean2477 07-07-2010 04:27 AM

I was just reading your post. Definately going to look into this rock you made.

Welcome Sean. Very nice tank. Look forward to the build. Should look great when running and full of corals.

Thanks Doug. Hopefully one day my tank looks something like the one I picture in my head:biggrin:.

sean2477 07-11-2010 04:11 AM

I added 90 lbs of live sand into the tank today. Still quite cloudy, but Im in no hurry.
I hope these pics work...

sean2477 07-15-2010 08:23 PM

I added my live rock a few days ago. The tank is totally clear, and looks pretty good already. Im still planning on adding another 75- 100 lbs of rock to it. I have some red mushrooms growing on some of the rock, and quite a few snails that came with them. Im also seeing some hairy red things poking out of the rock. Anyone know what they could be? Ill take some pictures tomorrow and post, but if you think you know what they could be, feel free to let me know:razz:
Thanks, Sean
