My Reef

This is my reef tank. It is still a work in progress. But arn't they all? The tank is 72x30x20, the tank was built by someone else and is the last tank in my house that I didn't build. I have been building a lot of nice tanks for people and am sick of looking at this tank. So in the near future I am going to be building a new tank. The new tank will have the same foot print but be 22" tall. With a piece euro, all edges polished, with the returns in the euro.
Enjoy Jay.IMG]http://i997.photobucket.com/albums/af97/reefcanada/001.jpg[/IMG]

very cool, I like the look of the two seperate reefs.
What equipment are you running?

plutoniumJoe 05-28-2010 04:49 AM

Great looking Tank! I also love the Tang in the bottom right of the picture. I look forward to seeing this progress.

Equipment

I am running an eight bulb 48" tek light. Look to upgrade to a ten bulb 60" ATI or a fourteen bulb 72" aquactinics. I am waiting on my ATI bubble master 250. I have a pos euroreef rs180 on it right now and I hate it. There is a reefkeeper two to control the lights and pumps. the main pump is a little giant 4-MDQX-SC, additional flow is by four koralia four's and a three. all of the power heads turn off with the bright lights and turn back on with them. I am not sure if this helps or hinders, but it seems to be working for me. The sump is 48x24x18 with a 20 gal fuge built in. I am running bio pellets in a large deltec reactor, but only half the recommended amount. This seems to be allowing my cheato to keep growing and not die off. I am also running a tunze ato and dossing is done when needed manually. Jay

this tank is outstanding.
i have seen it in person a few times and it always looks top notch, and lately it has been looking better and better everytime i see it.
great work jay, as always it looks beautiful.

mseepman 05-29-2010 03:28 PM

Very nice tank...I really think the two islands give it a nice look.

Doug 05-29-2010 04:38 PM

Great looking tank. Also like the fact you reside in there. :D

Is the center piece a corky sea finger gorgonian or a leather?

reefcanada 05-29-2010 04:51 PM

Thanks guys, I sleep in my 400 gal. The reef is a little small. The center coral is a finger leather.

lastlight 05-29-2010 08:37 PM

Really nice man. How many gallons total are you living with now?

reefcanada 05-29-2010 08:50 PM

In the house or just that tank?

Delphinus 10-03-2010 07:12 AM

It looks a little more 3dimensional than when I last saw it.

Anyhow, looks awesome!

lastlight 10-03-2010 07:24 AM

Pimpin' ain't easy but it sure is hella sexy. Internal overflow so you can get that beast against the wall?

And what besides the euro is starfire?

reefcanada 10-03-2010 07:40 AM

Thanks guys, just the front panel is starphire. You won't see the sides, so there was no point in making anything else starphire. I made the overflow a little shorter so that I can run a wave box and get a good size wave. I am trying to limit the amount of gear in this tank. I hope the hammerhead pump and wave box will be enough flow.

lockrookie 10-03-2010 07:43 AM

<-drrooooling i like the overflow with the etched glass nice touch

reefwars 10-03-2010 01:41 PM

reefcanada 10-15-2010 04:13 AM

Thanks Jon, that means alot as your tank is always one of great inspiration.

They really don't I've seen all the pics and it's nothing like seeing it in person, looks like some coral has been added lately??? Nice paly's I just got a 2head frag I'm hoping grows into that :)

reefcanada 11-10-2010 02:49 AM

Change of plans

Well I showed you pics of the new tank this reef "WAS" going to be going into. That is no longer the plan, I have now thought about this tank to much. Most of these corals are already out growing this tank and the new tank was going to be the same foot print just taller. That new tank was not going to do much for the corals.

So here is the new plan, the display tank will be 72'(L) x 48' (W) x 26"(H). The front and one piece eurobrace will be optiwhite. Optiwhite is clearer and softer that starphire, but I can get 15mm sooner that 15mm starphire. I am going to be doing a single rear overflow, with two 2" and one 1 1/2" drains. A double 12mm bottom with the top panel tempered.

The sump will be 60"(L) x 30"(W) x 16"(H). It will have a built in fuge and filter sock holders, with a nice big area for reactors and skimmer. The stand will be steel and I will make it 36" tall.

I am still debating on a closed loop system? I have two 24" LTA and we all know they love to find the intake of powerheads. I am concerend that they will find the intake of closed loop. I have a reeflo hammerhead pump, I may just try the same style that I was planing on the previous tank. Then use some powerheads for added flow if needed.

I will be running bio-pellets on this system as this tank already has them and they work well for this tank. The skimmer will be an ATI bubble master 250. Lighting will be 2- 48" x8 bulb tek T5HO's.

There will be a controller on this tank, I have a reef keeper 2 on this tank at the moment, but I may up grade to the RKE. I think that is about it, I hope to have this tank up for after Christmasor before if I can swing it. Thanks

lastlight 11-10-2010 02:56 AM

Can't wait to see it man. Let me know if you need hands to help move stuff out or in as you get going on this. I'll be there.

reefcanada 11-12-2010 03:31 AM

Thanks Brett, you are first on the list. I think this is going to happen fast. The eels are gone, the 200 is now shut down and the sale is pending. I have ordered the opti-white for the front panel and one piece eurobrace. Then next step is to move my 400 gal fw tank into the place of the 200. Thenk I can get the stand ordered and in place.

lastlight 11-12-2010 03:51 AM

Order the stand? You going metal for this one too?

Fast and furious progress. I'm not familiar with it but I do like it!

reefcanada 11-12-2010 04:02 AM

Yes I am going steel, I will get two stands made and then just bolt them together. I had to do that with the 400 I already have. Works great.

reefcanada 11-14-2010 01:30 AM

I have been thinking about the flow in this tank alot. I am going to by-pass the closed loop. I like my nems way too much. I am going to run three of the vertex moceans in the eurobrace and thenfour 6105' or 6205's. ( not sure on that one yet) on the sides. They will be run of of the tunze controller. I hope this will work well.

Triggz 11-14-2010 02:11 AM

That's a hell of a lot of flow!! Guess you need it with 4 FOOT deep tank!! Have you seen the Vertex Moceans in action?

Can't wait to see this bad boy set up.

reefcanada 12-20-2010 01:22 AM

Well, it's been awhile and alot has changed. I had to buy a new truck for work. So I am not going with a bigger tank for now. I am going to set up the 250 gal. I got the new stand and went with 36" tall, I like the room under the stand. I got the new sump built finaly and will have the tank up and running over the christmas break. Here are a few pictures of the new sump, return pump and my new to me skimmer. All I need to add is the filter sock holders. Enjoy.

reefwars 12-20-2010 03:54 AM

looking good buddy, that skimmer is mean lookin lol :):) your keeping the starphire now??

reefcanada 12-20-2010 07:39 PM

Yes I am, I just can't do anything else right now. Plus the live stock isn't liking the smaller tanks.

reefcanada 12-27-2010 05:24 AM

I hope every one had a great christmas and got lots of good stuff. The tank is finaly up on the stand and in place. I got all of the plumbing done, except for the drains. I forgot to get 2" pipe, I have all the fittings. Just need the pipe. I got the dry rock I had and the sand in. Tomorrow will be the drains installed and then fill it up. Here are a few pics.

White bg I've rarely seen that I think that could look killer man. Great idea with the valves on the returns. I found 90% of my flow went to the outer outlets and valves would have been nice.

Lampshade 12-27-2010 05:46 AM

Great looking tank. You'll love the ATI skimmer, if you don't already.
