Terry's new 6foot tank build.

so i got this really good deal on a 6 foot tank from a very respectable and extremly smart dude down in calgary last night and i just want to say again thank you so much John. most women give a guy hell if they get a bigger tank mine told me if i didnt get this tank id be in big @#$%, so i think i have been rubbing off on her with the whole salt water hobby as she is really likeing it and i am pretty sure she misses my koran angel and regal tang as much as i do. so this is where it starts again.

the dimensions are 72"x19"x24" so this is alot bigger then any tank i have ever had before.
it has a corner overflow on the right side that is on an angle, i like it this way because it prevents any dead spots in the corners.
there is a 33g sump with four baffles in it that is set up perfectly for my tunze 9006 skimmer and all my new upgraded goodies soon to be added to the list.

so i have one pic of the tank and stand and sump at the moment, but there will be lots more as the build progresses.
please be patiant as this build wont happen over night. i am going to take my time and work at it as fast as my paychecks alow.

please note this wont be the final resting place for this tank. i will be moving it to the other side of the basement where it will take up better unused room in my place.

Wow that thing looks a little different than the last time I saw it! Congrats on a cool woman, awesome tank and best of luck on it's sps restoration.

the marine apprentice 05-27-2010 03:25 AM

thanks for the comments guys, doug it may not be down hill but it will be empty wallet for the next while till its all running

well tehn i guess my phone doesnt tell me when i get a bunch of replies to my new thread haha.

but any ways. john had texted me today while i was at work and he was hounding me to get this thing full of water and what not. it is going to be a lil while before it is all up and running, as i still have a bunch of work to do to it. i took out the 50lb piece of marble that was used as the over flow and i will be replacing it with glass and a piece of black acrylic for a cleaner look.

and i also want to euro brace it all around because i will be using 2x 36" fixtures, probably 8 buld or if i find a good deal ill get two 6 bulb 36"s

as for right now i have my 65 set up running all my rock that i have laying around minus the bunch that i have over at the grizz in a rubbermaid, so atleast i wont have to cure much if any.

HEY WAIT A MINUTE THERE YOUNGSTER!! I had to build a stand, a sump, drill new hole's, build a closed loop and all new plumbing. I thought I did very well and not as long as some of the other on here.

Terry has a good start on this tank coming from John, should not have to change to much. So with that said get with it Terry:razz:

the marine apprentice 05-27-2010 04:15 AM

well i hope it dont take as long as gregs did haha. but the wait is always worth it in the end chase.

and josh yes you will be seeing some preogress. i might have to get you to grab me some acrylic rod and a piece of black acrylic on your way up. just ask john he will know where to get it

Should not have to change much? Greg, come on man, this is Terry we are talking about! By the time he is done doing every little "improvement" the tank will be a traingle shaped tank that gets a water change everytime the toilet in the bathroom flushes and with a triple tank sump underneath!

Chase31 05-27-2010 04:17 AM

i waited a long time for my tank, and now i have a pretty nice small tank that i love :)

Chase31 05-27-2010 04:23 AM

thanks mike u have pm

the marine apprentice 05-28-2010 02:48 AM

this is what the tank looks like right now. i painted the back of it bright white so i hope it gives me a good look with it. i did this to my nano and i love the way it looks but if i dont like it i can still get behind the tank to scrape it off and paint it a different color. any ideas on a good color other then white or black??

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...0/IMG_0532.jpg

Chase31 05-28-2010 04:02 AM

Blue looks really cool, and i think a purple pink or red would look cool, kinda mimiking the coraline algea? just got an idea!

the marine apprentice 05-28-2010 05:33 AM

im not really to sure how that would look. but it has givin me a few ideas as well.
thanks chase

lobsterboy 05-28-2010 05:34 AM

Terry the tank looks awesome without the marble over flow, I had purchased the tank used and the guy before me had the marble to match his gravel (freshwater)

cant wait to see it filled with water and rock and fish and coral, lol.

BTW, all thats going to be by the weekend eh..

the marine apprentice 05-28-2010 05:44 AM

haha i wish dude. i still have to get glass for the euro bracing and a new piece cut for the overflow. i need to get josh to get me some acrylic rod when he comes back up to red deer, i need a sheet of black acrylic to cover the overflow, i need to find some black egg grating, i still need to get the rest of my rock from greg, he has it running in a rubber maid if i remember correctly. lots of work dude lots of work

kien 05-28-2010 06:03 AM

Looking great! I have a black background on my tank and find that I am battling trying to keep it religiously clean because it picks up green and purple coraline spots very easily :( I guess you can't really get away from that though. I wonder if white might highlight the coraline even more

the marine apprentice 05-28-2010 06:14 AM

well i have white on my nano kien and all it shows really is the stringy algea that likes to grow on my glass haha. but im sure if a guy runs a low nutriant system you wont get as much of that would you?

kien 05-28-2010 06:23 AM

ya I've never really had a problem with stringy algae but coraline is my nemesis! :twised: I can literally see that stuff grow and spread before my very eyes..

I would assume reducing nutrients to ultra low levels would cut back on the stringy stuff.

the marine apprentice 05-28-2010 06:29 AM

thats what i was thinking as well. plus my nano is still fairly new so my coraline isnt out of control yet lol. i remember watching it grow like crazy in my old 90g i had set up.
