Well so far I LOVE the trade(considering im only 16 and getting my ITA numer in the next week or so)
We work on alot of Internationals, K/W and trailers from DHL.

Cornbinders, beatercars and kenworthless. I shouldnt say much, were a Mack/Volvo dealer. Its a good trade, I started straight out of school and got my ticket at 22. How busy are you guys lately?

Mik_101 03-29-2010 07:12 AM

Id say failrly busy were just down the road from the DHL yard and they got a ton of trailers for us(MVI and alot of them fail on the S-Cam bushings) we also have alot fleets that come to are shop so both the night and day shifts stay busy. What about you guys?

zum14 03-29-2010 07:24 AM

It comes in waves, were basically owned by Bandstra Transport so we get all there service work, plus the dealer traffic but it will be busy for two days then the light switch turns off and you could shoot a cannon through the shop.

Yea we also had a few of those days were not a single trucks in the shop....it sucks.

automotive, 3.5 years in the trade. worked full time at mazda but now only part time at ford while i am in school. love working on cars, just decided it was ruining my love for them. alot of people were upset about this and my manager is still trying to convince me to come back to full time and get my ticket.

ALBERTA REEF 03-30-2010 01:41 AM

I worked in the Automotive trade for 12 year. Licence Journeyman. Have bin laid off twice. GM is a bitter mistress. Haven't work for over a year. Have been looking but the market is flooded with techs now. Going back to school before I really hate Vehicles.

My, aren't you the lucky one? KMC still the wonderful company it once was- or do you not need to service their account?

Dont work for KMC, contracted to NACG, who is working for Shell Albian sands

Dolf 03-30-2010 01:37 PM

You could always ask for a transfer... I shouldn't say that. The Finning mechanics I talked to didn't find it so bad as they were not directly employed by Klemke. KMC actually turned me off of running equipment for other people. Bought a midi excavator, but I'm though running other people's junk.

On a side note I ended up employed with a smaller shop in town for awhile- mostly Peterbuilts- but they would do just about anything. There was no shortage in variety of work nor models to work on. Some days I miss it.

37 years and counting in automotive, still love it most of the time, as always business has had a few ups and downs but still going strong, owned my own shop now for the past 8 yrs

BMW Rider 03-31-2010 11:52 PM

Licensed auto mechanic, but have not plied the trade for several years. I did about eight years full time after high shcool including my appenticeship. Worked another few years part time and did lots of work at home for several years.

Now I don't even work on my own vehicles, they're new enough that they get dealership service. I do lots of tinkering and maintenance on my motorcycles though.
