Thanks for all the compliments folks,

Aqua there is quite a bit of controversy over the use of DSB/ Mangroves but after setting them up I will never run a tank with out them. Even if there is no benefit they look amazing and create a great structural foundation for my pistol shrimp/ goby pair.

That being said, DSB's can give you some trouble as I just experienced (When they are mixed up they release some pretty nasty stuff into the water). Due to that I started running the NP bio pellets as a second source of N/P reduction and so far so good.

For the first little while the tangs were on edge, but once everyone learned there place on the pecking order things were good to go. I have two very diligent cleaner shrimps and have not had any Ich or parasite problems to date. I tend to power feed, lots of frozen (Brine Shrimp, Mysis, Cyclo, Home made stuff), Nori and Form 1/2 pellets 4-8 times per day.

WOW really sweet color's in there Levi, can't wait for zoa frag day, hopefully it can be on a weekend and I am available to be there first in line.

Delphinus 04-24-2010 06:06 AM

4 to 8 times per day, and people give me grief for overfeeding at 3x per day ?! How do you not have NO3 and PO4 climbing away on you, how often are you waterchanging?

no_bs 04-24-2010 06:17 AM

Pretty sweet Levi.

Last water test had me at:
NH3- 0 PPM
Nitrite- 0 PPM
Nitrate- 10-15 PPM
Will test phosphate when I steal the test kit from my bro . Water changes are in smaller increments but equate to about 15% per month.

Running the DSB Fuge with about 100 mangroves, 200 lbs of liverock, 1000g NP Biopellet in the vertex reactor, Euro reef 135 skimmer, carbon and a little bit of cheato.
My fish seem to love it and considering the polyp extention on my LPS I will continue doing so, I do larger feeding's some times right before night and have started soaking in selcon with some pretty interesting results. 5 500mg Vit C tabs are dosed daily to help out the zoas.

After feeding like this for a while I'm blown away at how many different forms of life I have going on, night time on the reef is a whole different place , btw if anyone needs cheato that is PACKED full of copepods (and limpets, live shrimp, tiger pods, bristle stars...ect...ect) shoot me a PM I have lots to spare.

Not sure if my screen is right but I'm sure I saw some pieces in there with my name on them :heh: . Looking fantastic Mr . I used to have lots of those little brittle stars, thought they where the neatest thing.

You would think that with a Copper band, 2 Mandarins, 2 yellow and purple corris and 2 fairy wrasses that my reef would be devoid of micro fauna but they don't even make a dent. Thanks for the comment!

Could you tell us more about the Vit.C dosing. 5 tabs seems like alot. Do you just buy regular tabs from the health food store?Crush them?mix with water?Target feed the zoos with it?Thanks.

If you need a little more info on the Vit C here is a great read:http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=1602494

It suggests that you use the pure Vit C and not the tabs but after 5 months of dosing I have had only positive results. The tabs I use contain rose hips among a few other misc compounds and are dropped directly into my overflow to dissolve. Vit C has a very short half life in sea water so dosing smaller portions more times a day is preferable (Which I do when I'm not lazy ).

This has to be the most important post:
Quote:

Use this product:
http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=10178&at=0
$5 0ff coupon code: LUL789 (good for first purchase).

To figure out how much to use, decide if you want to simply improve coral growth, spread, and color. If so, then you should dose around 5 ppm twice daily (down to 2-3 ppm works also). If you are having problems with coral or fish health, dose up to around 30 ppm twice daily.

Calculate the total net number of gallons in your tank (minus rocks, sand, etc). Enter that number here ______.

You will now need to do a little math. The amounts below are for 100 gallons of water so if you have 50 net gallons, cut the amounts shown below in half etc.

Dosing amounts using Iherb product:
1/4 tsp=1112 mg.

For every 100 gallons:

5 ppm ----- 1892 mg VC
10 ppm ---- 3785 mg VC
15 ppm ---- 5677 mg VC
20 ppm ---- 7570 mg VC
25 ppm ---- 9462 mg VC
30 ppm ---- 11355 mg VC

After you have figured out how much you want to dose at each dosing, enter that number here _____. This is your dose to be used twice a day.

Notes:
*Be sure your pH and alk are within normal reef limits before starting. Adjust if needed. Monitor weekly.
*Shoot for a ppm of around 5 or lower if only dosing for improved coral growth, coloration, and spread. Shoot for higher amounts up to 30 ppm if you are having melting zoas or closed zoas and look for the causes of your problems as you dose. Check for high nitrates, pests, zoa pox, predators, and unstable water conditions.
*Dose low amounts and increase the amount slowly over the course of a few days to a couple weeks.
* If you notice an algae bloom or increased skim on your glass then cut back by half until it disappears.
* Watch your skimmer, it will start to skim more.
* Dose the amount twice a day in a fast moving area of your sump or overflow. You may dilute the vitamin c in ro/di water for a minute then pour into my overflow. If adding to sump, try and add the vitamin c after filtration such as skimmers and reactors.
* If you have a question, ask here. Puffy checks this thread daily.
* The instructions in this guide and throughout this thread are based on using pure Sodium Ascorbate, not vitamin c pills and other non-buffered forms of vitamin c.

Be sure to take some "before" pics!

Zoaelite 05-11-2010 06:41 PM

Soon Mike soon , recent ALK swings have made for some pretty unhappy zoas so I'm waiting a little while before I start snipping. The last frag batch I cut ended up melting my giant radioactive dragon eye colony and a few smaller ones so I need to ensure my levels are constant.

I will be snipping up chalices & SPS when the time comes, not to many frags but the good stuff none the less.

There is a gaint hole on the other side, I will be placing some of my less stunning SPS there and putting the formosa smack dead in the center for everyone to see . Infamous the red/ teal is a spiderman acan (acanthastrea lordhowensis), it has to be one of my oldest corals its breaching 200+ Polyps now.
