4 pound tang - or vegetarian moray eel...

Well not really. But my purple tang did just snap some 4 pound test fishing line that I use to hang a veggie clip in the tank... now the clip has sunk and I cant find it.

What gets me is I still dont understand how it did it. I wasnt watching when it happened. One minute the tang was eating some nori off of the suspended clip and the next minute it was gone. The fishing line was only a few months old and even though it had been under MH light it didnt show any signs of weakness. However the line did snap where the knot was tied and its strength would be compromised a bit there. So perhaps 2 pounds of force was what it took... but that still seems like quite a tug from a tang.

I've looked through that thread but I'm not sold on the idea. I think what I need to do is just use some stronger fishing line. Thats if I can ever find the veggie clip again... it must have fallen behind the rock-work somewhere. Hopefully the eel will push it out one of these days.

Just get Poontang's feeder. Beleve me, it's awesome. no more messin with clips, line, nothin. Take it out, wrap Nori around it with a rubber band and set in tank. I've had 5 fish, including 2 very large tangs pulling at it at the same time, never an issue

My fishing line and clip was working great until super-tang stole my lure. All I had to do was clip some nori in and drop it in the tank. When it was finished eating I'd pull the clip up and sit it in the bracing until next time. I just need to retrieve the clip and buy the stronger line...

I'd love to see Supertang go a couple rounds with Poon's feeder :D Let'\s see if you can break this HAHAHA

I CORRECT MYSELF! The veggie clip may not have been snapped off of its line by a tang with super human strength. Today I watched as my 26" snowflake moray eel attacked the hanging clip and ate the attached nori! WTF! Since when do moray eels eat seaweed!? Wow...

Zoaelite 03-30-2010 07:24 PM

26"... That's a mightly impressive eel, have any photos of the beasty?

whatcaneyedo 03-30-2010 07:52 PM

He generally doesnt come out to get his picture taken but I was able to snap both of these recently. I wish I could have gotten a picture of it eating the nori. Weird.

Man he's gorgeous!! I'd love to try a snowflake one day. Current tank is not big enough for a second eel!!

Zoaelite 03-30-2010 09:28 PM

WOW, I never thought of adding an eel to the tank are they reefsafe or will I have gobies go missing on me? He's beautiful!!!!

whatcaneyedo 03-30-2010 09:53 PM

The eel has been much more 'reef safe' than my purple tang and copperband butterfly. The smallest fish I have with it are a mandarin dragonet and a yellow coris wrasse. No crabs or shrimp.

That poccilliporra in the back. Is that the pink one you had before? If so, is it the lighting or pics? 'Cause it looks like the same color as mine and mine used to be pink when I got it from you. Same with hamilton 14k and geisman 13k.

whatcaneyedo 03-30-2010 10:13 PM

Its the same one, I originally got it from ReeferRob. Its under 14K 250W phoenix bulbs so that might make a bit of a difference. Doug has one that is similar but with some green color to it.
