Making tank purchases when you're in a relationship
Loved this article, too funny.
http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/...ish-tales.html I really like guy edition step 4 (why didn't I think of that one, pay 80% when alone and the other 20% when with the SO?! Brilliant!!) |
Thanks for the laugh! I skip to the girls step three! He won't notice!
|
Hahaha!
That is hilarious. Good read, for sure. Thanks. |

I bought the beer for Friday! I am expecting an order. Wish me luck.
|
 That was great, however #4 of the guy edition works much better then beer and TV in my case.

Do like I did go to pet stores and talk about the fish alot and how you miss haveing a tank then go to any and all garage sales that have a tank sitting in the drivway and wate till you see a large enough one that you want. By the way she had been bugging me to buy everyone of the tanks along the way. So we by the larger one and it sits on the back deck for till she insists on bringing it in then she gets sneeky drags it in while you are out of town working. now it has to get setup or she will be realy upset. since then she has been looking for more tanks and thingsand every time I say no to one I get the 20 questions. So now we sit with 3 tanks that I am trying to sell 2 tanks up and running very nice tanks I may add. I also have some miss stuff That I am going to get ride of.

It works for me My wife is always telling me to buy this or that for the tank I culd buy almost any thing and she will love it then complain about it latter. I worned her this hobby is exspencive before I bought anything else but the tank and I reiterated it the exspencive part when she insisted I set up the tank.

I wish juicy couture made stuff for salt water. Girlfriend will buy anything with that brand name. Then I don't have to make excuses for my purchases.
|
You know what they say.
People new to the Hobby pay for everything on Visa or Debit card. They quickly change to paying with cash. No records and no questions asked. You just have to ensure no one sees you bringing the bags home and you just have come up with those standard answers. Is that a new fish? No I have had him for years he usually hangs out in the back of the tank. Tom R |

Well, we are both just as silly when it comes to buying corals. Some nights it's ok to have grilled cheese and soup instead of steak and potato, then we go down and look at the pretty corals. Maybe one of us should have a little more sense. But it seems to work.:lol::lol:

I love how the girl edition is so much shorter
This is why you have one set up before you start dating someone. Set the ground rules and assure that they know its part of the package before commiting to you. |

Like when I was trying to explain to a non-reefer about my reef tank.
" My reef tank is like a high maintenance Trophy Wife. Beautiful to look at , but requires constant maintaining. Biggest difference is " my tank doesn't Talk Back" lolll |
lol.... askin my wife was ez... it all started whan my baby girl was about 1 ish... in like 6 months we watched "finding nemo" like 3000 dame times... lol... we got her her own tv to watch it but my baby knows whats good... the big tv was the best... that dident work out like we wanted too.... so i told Aaliyah (my baby girl) i would get her a BIG tank and we will get nemo and dorie and what not... so i told Aaliyah to ask mom.... done like din din.... cant say no to a baby.. in the past year we watched the movie like maybe 6 times.... problom solved...

My plan is simple. Of all the tanks and equipment I have had over the years, nothing was ever purchased without my wife knowing about it. Its always been both our monies and we are always up front with any purchases. Perhaps thats why we are still happily married after 42yrs. :D

Wow! Doug 42 years of marriage and you with this hobby (addiction) she must be quite the women.  Who can't relate to this! Very funny! |
Like Doug all the money in the house is our money. But we budget so each of us has a set amount of mad money every month and what I spend that money on my business.
|
Maybe someone can help me out with this one...
"Pay 80% beforehand and 20% with her there" or "pay cash so it's not traceable" I still have the problem of extracting the 80% or the cash from the account. Either way she'll know I took a buttload of money. Hints please! |

This is why I have 2 accounts one my pay checkes go into and a nouther my tax returns are deposited into and that is where fish stuff money comes from. when I buy some thing she does not know what I pay for or how much. Use your tax refund.

Hmmm....why don't I have one of those "simple" husbands that you can throw beer in the fridge and turn on the TV and "he won't notice" what I spend on the tank!:lol:
And honesty...........don't know if that one will fly either!:lol: Although I must commend you Doug on 42years of marriage! Perhaps in a couple more years when I am in the "work force" again, he won't mind...right now it's sorta noticable when the money comes from his account! He's the only one making $! (Stay at home Mom...) Hard to convince hubby that a $500 Vortech is a much needed piece of equipment! What a Hobby we have!~ |
*sigh* I have my own money and my own account and I'm not allowed to buy "fish stuff" other then food. Might have something to do with all the money I've already sunk into the hobby
|
Tax return...oh how I wish!
We've always paid taxes on my wife's job and my second job all in one shot so I never have a return. Must say I felt pretty damn special buying my tank and sump recently. Most I've ever spent (lol...like ~ $200 total) without consulting first. I'm the sole bread-winner now so maybe I can sneak a few past her. Biggest issue is she handles paying the bills etc and I really don't want to...so she sees what I'm up to lol! |

LOL same here but that doesn't stop me  |

You really only need 1 rule...
1. Its much easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.. :twised: |

just buy what you need and slip in something once in a while say nothing and do not admit to putting anything in the tank again...... someone must have brought that over and put it in there how nice of them..... Works for me some times ..... forget to mention a decimal in the price of some thing you get from some one else. sell some thing and put that money in the joint account and say I am now selling stuff and adding to the joint account when it should be going back into the othere account where it came from.... They think differntly after that....

I got busted today! Nothing was said though, for now! I am sure it will come up sooner than later.
I even tried the beer and hockey, but he caught on! It's a little hard to ignore all the drip tubes I have going! |
LOL, I just managed to sneak in a comment about a powerhead purchase while talking about going to Ikea to get a cabinet for our kitchen (killing two birds with one stone as the powerhead is in Van). He didn't even blink an eyelash and proceeded to talk about how we were going to get the cabinet
Sometimes I think he just isn't listening to me  |

raf and i are lucky because we equally like aquariums (its how we met). i am probebly the persuader though, in that i always want more things and raf ends up doing the work to maintain them  |
