Latest addition to the menagerie
I'd like to introduce you to the latest addition to my menagerie ...
DJ the Dachshund! (Short for DeJean) He's 3yrs old and comes to me via one of the neighbour's who're culling their herd ;) They rescued him from the kennel they use where his previous owners had left him. Apparently they had just got a pair of new dogs and decided they liked the new ones better & left him at the kennel. My neighbours couldn't leave him there (he'd already been there for 3 months) and picked him up for their daughter who'd been looking for one for her kids. Unfortunately, the cat didn't like the idea ... Ooops  Right now, DJ's in the process of deciding if he wants to adopt me :) http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e178/fire622/DJ4.jpg http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e178/fire622/DJ3.jpg http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e178/fire622/DJ5.jpg |

Right now, he's lying on his blanket pouting because I wouldn't let him beg while I was having supper  I love how they have such expressive faces, melt you in your place or make you laugh yourself silly :) |

So kind of you for taking in this little lost soul, just looking to love and be loved. It brings tears to my eyes, to think people treat animals in their care so cruel. Both physically & mentally. Glad you 2 found each other
Oh, and believe me, they know they have been rescued. B. |

I've been taking them down slowly, 3 clips so far, to avoid hurting him. He's really good about it & I don't want to have him develop a fear of the clippers. I'm not sure how sensitive his quicks are, so I'm only taking a bit off at a time. |

Not for Dogs. Not for fish. I won't buy a Tang because my tank is not big enough for a fish that will get their size as an adult. Why would I treat a dog with any less respect? ... and now all I need to do is learn DJ's language. Like if you've just been outside, you've been fed, you've got water, why are you circling the kitchen & whining ?!? Oh, I get it. We are not playing ball in the kitchen! |
I got my pooch off the local reserve here. They found him 5 weeks old @2:00am on the highway. He is now my Boy! I hate how people just don't care.

How long have you had him, now? You got him young enough that he probably wasn't feral and hadn't developed too many bad habits. Hopefully he wasn't out by himself very long & he wasn't traumatized, malnourished or dehydrated. Unfortunately, free running or abandoned dogs & cats of all ages are not unusual and more common in some places than others. We may not be able to change peoples ways, but we can do our part to help out our 4-legged friends whenever we can. As a wise person said, there aren't bad dogs, just bad owners. |
Aww, he,s very nice Vic. Love the weenie dogs. Had one or more for the last 25 yrs.

I was talking to my sister last night about DJ & she was telling me about how I used to spend hours at the neighbour's playing with their Dachshund - I don't remember, I was less than 4yrs old when we moved ... Gee, are we surprised I now have one?!? |

Our last one was 17yrs, old the night he died from heart failure in my wife,s arms. Vic, they can be a very possessive dog. Most will do anything to protect its owners or as we say, its pets, which are us. . I dont think we socialized our current one enough and he is a bit aggressive at times when protecting us. The old one mentioned above was the complete opposite and cared about nothing. Hmmmm, secret to old age. |

DJ has the potential temperament for that - I've seen a hint of it in him, but I'll try not to give him too much of my personality  At the neighbour's house, he would come barking when anyone came to the door - not overly aggressive, but he wouldn't listen to them when they told him to "Stop!" He also did this when someone went to leave; he chased them out the door, barking. I'm working with him on this. I've arranged with the neighbour's to come over & I've had him on the leash beside me so I could correct his behaviour right as it was happening. So far so good. Quote:

He spent the entire day by himself & other than figuring out how to get up on the kitchen counter (Not quite sure how he did it & but didn't touch anything) he was a saint! DJ, I mean, not Doug  |
