iPad - Who is going to get one?
I pretty much knew I was going to want an iPad even before it was released. Now, I definitely see myself getting one. Who else is planning on getting one? Are you going to wait for the 3G version or go WiFi only?
|
THIS guy!
Not sure I want more wireless fees tho...might go wifi only since it'll be used at home. It's going to be a surprise for my wife...she's been suffering on a netbook ever since her old iBook died. |
I want one too.... but Ill have to wait because I am buying a new imac in the summer. Cant do the PC think anymore:sad: Gonna use my old pc as the brains for my tank lol
|
Don't waste your money Brett! lol Or at least wait for the V.2 to come out..
|
Josh why do you think the first is for my wife =)
I know which ones to buy lol! My current macbook pro was going to go to her when I upgrade...but now I might have to find some reef-related tasks for it to handle! |
looks fun so i might end up with one, ill just get the wifi version too, disappointing about the no camera though

V2 =) First gen iPhones did video no problem. Only until V3 did they make it officially do-able without a cracked phone. I might just be bitter since mine is V2 lol. |
Hey can we group buy this?
|
in my opinion it was a good idea, but they could have done waaay more with it. in my eyes right now all it is really is a huge half jailbroken ipod touch

No SD card slot for pics/video (need a usb adapter), no camera, can't multi-task, doesn't support Flash.. It does what it can do well, but it can't do much more than an iPod/iTouch/Laptop. Not better anyways, and that's what Steve Jobs said this Tablet had to do.. but it just DOESN'T! EDIT: I am patiently waiting for the Iphone 4G, a product that will be great, supports multi-task, face side camera for video calling, etc.. |
As a flash developer I'm DYING to see Flash FINALLY make it's way to these damn things. The Google Android should trigger everyone to play catchup...I hope.
You can't multi-task with these? Dammit Steve... |
In my eyes, my 180gal tank is just huge jailbroken 5gal Nano, and I love it
Yes, I'll get iPad. |
I will be in line for one. Yes, it is not a laptop and it is not an iPhone, but I don't think it is trying to be either. I have a laptop and an iPhone and I often wished that my laptop was lighter and easier to lug around and often wish that my iPhone was bigger and had more real estate. The iPad is clearly targeted at me  Lots of people wish it was so much more than what it is. Don't get me wrong, I wish that it could make dinner for me and wash my car too! All those other features would be great but you can't please everyone, you can't have your cake and eat it. It isn't a revolutionary device but it does have its uses. I imagine one day university students will be toting this guys around instead of a backpack full of heavy textbooks, and business people reading these on the train to work instead of newspapers, doctors lugging these around with access to records and xrays instead of those clipboards.
Regarding the whole no multitasking and no flash thingy, if I had to guess, I would guess that Apple has a team of engineers trying to come up with a way to achieve these things without sacrificing too much of the other things they believe in, like battery power for one. Both of those can drain the battery significantly and I for one appreciate the batter life out of my iPhone at the cost of multitasking. However, I do agree that on a device like the iPad you really do *need* multitasking. Listening to music while typing up a report in iWorks.. duh! Again, I hope that apple is just trying to engineer a way to allow multitasking in a more sane manner than typical implementations. In the end iPad 1.0 is Apples way of testing the waters I think; making sure there is a market for it and seeing where those markets are. iPad 2.0 will be much more WOW I'm sure. |
Note - not exactly family viewing!

Plus, it's too big to fit in your pocket or on your hip, so that means you gotta lug it around in a laptop bag (or man purse) and if I'm gonna do carry a "satchel" I might as well have my laptop with me. I suppose that would give you a place to put all your different USB adapters since it doesn't come with any type of card slots. Jobs made such a big deal about photos and video, yet you can't even toss a Memory card in? (without an adapter) Lame! I certainly don't see Doctors walking around with a MaxIpad in the near future. Most businesses don't even run Mac/OSX for corporate. To damn expensive. Can't see Healthcare getting on board. It doesn't do anything better than a laptop can really. Just a Large Itouch. V1 certainly isn't the one I would be looking at... While watching the Key Note presentation it did some cool things, but it was definitely disappointing. ** I am an Apple fan BTW... and I still think this is a waste of money.. especially $500USD. |
Oh and I'll be definitely getting the 3G 64gb version! Not enough wifi hot spots in the city :-(

I think people don't quite get the strategy yet as I don't think Apple has it all put together just yet. I think there is alot more to come in terms of content. I believe you will see every newspaper and magazine being offered on the iPad. The publishing industry is struggling with newspapers closing down all over the world. I'm one of those reasons. I can't remember the last time I bothered looking at a major newspaper and rarely buy magazines anymore. But if I could download them to a device and read them at my leisure (or even carry around dozens easily) I would be more likely to pay for that. Especially if they are more weblike and come enhanced with interactive content and video etc. I think that part of the story is yet to unfold.
As a student, imagine having all your big heavy text books on it and just carry one 1.5 pound device around that has your books, in full colour and also possibly with video content, and is also your note pad for lectures. I would have jumped on that when I was in school. As a professional, I would consider this when it is time to replace my MacBook Pro. Far easier to carry around and it will do everything I need when mobile and then I can get a better more powerful desktop for the more intense work like photoshop etc. at the office. I think it is fantastic for presentations as Keynote has built in highlighters and laser pointer functionality you use on the touch screen. Plug it into a projector and then use your finger on the touch screen as a laser pointer. As for multitasking, I think that will come in OS 4.0. BTW, your iPhone/iPod Touch do multitask a bit. You can listen to your music from the iPod application while doing other work. I think the major problems with multitasking are twofold: 1. Having multiple applications running at once will severely decrease battery life and then you will have your users complaining about the battery only lasting 3 or 4 hours. So it's a no-win situation there and the lesser evil is to have good battery life as the majority of users don't really need the device to multitask. How many of you iPhone/iPod Touch owners really truly are put out by not having multitasking? The only thing I can think of that would be better is for applications to be protected when a call comes in so you can go back to what you were doing when you took the call as some applications quit when you answer the phone. Other than that , nada, don't need multitasking. 2. RAM memory. The iPhone doesn't have alot of actual RAM memory for running programs and you would quickly run out of memeory having more than two applications running at once. I know that Apple did do some work with using the flash storage memory as virtual RAM but from my understanding that can cause its own problems too. So I guess what I am saying is that although it maybe didn't live up to the hype (but what could considering the rumours and level of hype out there) it is a revolutionary device that will change the way people interact with computers and also make portable computing easier, more convenient and more enjoyable. Apple does really think about the way we interact with computers and I guarantee you this will be light years ahead of any stupid tablet running Windows7. Touch interfaces are more intuitive and are the future and Apple does it better than anybody else right now. Very young children can use my iPhone after a very short learning period so that tells you something. I may not get an iPad in the near future but as I said, when the relatively new laptop is due for replacement an iPad will likely be what replaces it. |

I am not a MAC fan, only been a pc guy, but I can say they do make good products. This IPad though, I may even try it out.

I just don't want to spend the money on something that is more, when I have never had issues. I did however take a MAC IT course way back when, and that is why I say they are good products, as I had my hands in one and built one from the ground up, or should I say took it apart and put it back together. I will say though, the world would of been a different place if Apple was a little smarter in their youth. They could of been the every computer in every household instead of Microsoft/PC. I will admit that. If it ain't broke don't fix it, is my attitude, Microsoft/PC's work for me, so I stick with them. |
iWon't

I am interested in an ebook reader with a bigger screen though. The color display with the addition of WiFi browsing capability appeals to me. |
Not interested at all - yet:biggrin:

Not a bad idea.. I pad with Wifi.. Nice. But till February, my pocket is not going to allowing to purchase this item..So i will purchase it on Feb.

iWon't ether, all hype on some new shiny toy nothing new. |
Look at the big picture.
V1 has a lot of things missing, V2 will fill some. etc... Upgrade, not upgradeability is Apples solution. damn, I want a camera, now I have to upgrade to a V2. Who wins in this solution? My other company does a lot of PC & Apple sales, and I notice that quite clearly. Boths sides are quite adamant of the others issues. Ken |
Nope, not me. I'd rather buy some aquarium gear and get some use out of my money.
|
Not me either. Not willing to spend that kind of money on something that will be out-of-date as soon as they add new features, like camera, slots, multitasking, etc.
Anthony |
I can see the addition of a camera in the near future but not slots. That's not Apple's way. Multitasking will just be a software update.
|
A lot of hype but not exactly the revolutionary device that Jobs suggested. It seems like a lot of people are underwhelmed with it because Apple's stock has dropped close to $20 since it spiked hours after Wednesdays announcement.
If you are waiting for iPad v2.0 to come out and add a camera, multitasking, usb etc. you may not have heard of a device that I would wait for before I put money into an iPad - the courier. Have a look at the 2 videos http://gizmodo.com/5365299 especially the one on the right sidebar. Projected cost $600 and release mid-year. |
Microsoft will never release anything as good as what the Courier concept video looks like. And certainly not by mid year. Sorry, they are incapable. Any Microsoft tablet will be based on Windows and will not work anywhere near as well as Apple's. I think the iPad will prove to be revolutionary as it is the first large screen touch interface mobile computing device like the ones that used to be science fiction. Apple's multitouch is much better then any other available right now and they have put alot of thought into the interface. And there are already 140,000 touch apps available for it. Granted the scaled up graphics won't look as beautiful but they do appear to be usable and decent. And just wait for iPad specific apps to start showing up to really show what it will do. If the iPad iWork is any indication then this will be one of the most intuitive and easy to use computer platforms ever.
I know it sounds like I am a raving iFan but I'm not a blind follower. Yes it should have multitasking but I am fairly certain that is an OS 4.0 feature we will see this summer. A camera should probably have been included but they probably omitted it to meet the aggressive price points. That was probably a bit of a mistake as they could have included it and upped the price $50. Otherwise I don't really see anything missing or wrong with it. You have to put a bit of thought into what the potential of the device is and the potential uses. it is not meant to replace a full on laptop if you need that horsepower or you need to do alot of keyboard input. But for the vast majority of people it will have more than enough capability to let them easily and intuitively do what they want to in a lightweight and portable package. It think it blows any netbook away as most netbook users buy them to surf the net, check email etc. on the go. All things I think the iPad will do as well or better than a netbook. You have to put on your thinking cap and imagine the potential usefulness of this and some of the yet to be introduced apps and features and then I think you will see the potential for another revolution in mobile computing. I think Steve Jobs, despite his quirks, has a very clear vision of how to make technology work well and be accessible to the masses. He is a perfectionist who fixates over every detail. Just look at what the iPod/iTunes store did for music and what the iPhone did for mobile phones. They have a pretty good track record so far. |

I think this is an interesting view that agrees with my thoughts:

The previous post may be the opinion of one Apple fan but the industry seems to be universally underwhelmed by the iPad as evidenced by its stock decline since the 27th.
Who knows what their opinion will be once the reviewers actually get their hands on it and it is released to the public. http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h2...1140/apple.jpg |

I think time will tell but I see the exact same thing that happened with the iPod and iPhone happening with the iPad. Everybody criticized and focussed on the negatives when they were announced but both changed technology and their industries. Let's wait and see but my prediction is that the iPad will be a game changer. |
I think the next version will be a game changer but this first iPad will make some happy, will be ok for the majority of buyers, and will greatly disappoint quite a number of buyers. Will it live up to the hype? Probably not V.1. V.2 probably will, but that doesn't help all these First Adopters who end up with an expensive new "toy" that will be outdated in only a few short months.
The way I sort of see it is that the iPad is not targeted at the business market. It's targeted more at a younger audience who has grown up with iPods and iPhones and are looking for something more versatile than a Netbook, but not needing a full laptop. If they develop wireless file transfers from people's digital cameras and such, then having no slots of memory cards or a built-in camera becomes less important in the decision-making process. I don't see much logic (from a market share point of view) of Apple developing iPad into a full-on replacement for their laptops. Why steal customers from one division to create sales in another division of the same company? However, if it can create a niche market for itself, then it can win market share from non-traditional, non-Apple laptop customers. I think they are targeting iPhone customers who want to love their devices but want to do more on a larger screen. Get these customers to fork out hundreds of dollars for constantly improved new models like they already do with their iPhones & iPods. If Apple is able to sign exclusive contracts with major book, textbook, and journal publishers to be the sole providers of the eBook version of their publications, then this will be a game-changer. Imagine how many college and university students will buy one so that they don't have to constant buy & lug around heavy print textbooks. Imagine how many professionals will want one to download and read countless journals and eNewspapers to stay up-to-date and informed. Adding this exclusive feature (and stealing it away from Amazon) would greatly change people's perception of the iPad from a cool new "toy" (like a big iPhone) to a necessary, everyday tool that will pay for itself in convenience, cost-savings, and other advantages. Sorry for the essay. Anthony |
