Sim Aquarium 2

Here's a nice photorealistic Reef screen saver. Looks very impressive. Anyone running it?

These are modelled after actual tanks.

Its neat how the clams open and close and the softies sway in the currents.

First, when I ran the program, it made several unauthorized attempts to access the internet, these were intercepted and recorded by my firewall.

Second, it changed my browser startup page to a new page called "myfunstart.com"

Nice enough looking graphics but I don't appreciate it when programs screw around with my computer's settings.

Holy crap. I can't believe that. Sorry I didn't pick up on that. I looked at the site and looked at the fan forum and wasn't aware it would do something like this. This is not right for them to do that. I assume that they had to modify the registry to change the homepage. Wonder what else they did. I'll have to try and find out.

I think you can modify the homepage via Java or VBS quite easily.

But if using a script, wouldn't it pop up a dialog box asking you to confirm before changing it? Running script over a browser is more secure than installing software with Admin privileges which is why it is disturbing if they are indeed altering our registries during the installation.

FYI. I sent an Email to Sim Aquarium and also put a message about this up on their fan site. Today, I redownloaded the demo and it is 500K smaller and doesn't change your homepage anymore.

Thanks for pointing this out trilinearmipmap. Thank goodness for firewalls.

Here's the link to my post on the fan site if you are wondering.

There are ways in newer versions of the software to override the confirmation messages I believe. That's Microsoft usability for you.

Anyone else who installed simaquarium also got "incredifind" installed as well? Whenever I go to a non-existent website, I now get this message instead of the regular one:

Powered by Incredifind

Well, I went to Programs Add/Remove and removed Incredifind. My web browsing is working much better now. I think this stuff is all spyware. You should remove them.

You guys should also uninstall the Simaquarium program and also remove the directory that was created because uninstalling Simaquarium leaves the spyware behind.
