I'm finding my eel is starting to get braver and he seems to venture out every now and then

Great shots Laurie!

P.S. Why the double [IMG] tags around all your images?

What kind of eel is that??? Never thought about keeping an eel??

lorenz0 12-25-2009 06:27 AM

Great shots. Glad to hear he's swimming out in the open more. Ironically mine has gone from more out to more hidden, he only comes out at feeding time, grabs the food and disappears. "Ok thanks. Sayonara! Later fool." Is he more active at dusk for you? Do you have a dusk/dawn on your tank?

Is that a golden?

Either way beautiful! Great shots! Thanks for sharing!

It's because I'm special  Honestly it always does that but I don't know why.

It's a dwarf golden moray eel. So far mine has been reef safe and safe with small fish. They say these eels (as any other type of eel) will eat anything that will fit into it's mouth. However this type of eel stays fairly small, about the size of a pencil only longer. I also find while mine can eat whole silversides he is very slow at biting them off from the feeding tongs I use and I have to feed mine with the tail part sticking out towards his as I find the side of the body or the head of the silversides are to fat for him to grab onto.

I don't have a dawn/dusk setting, right now I find he's active when the lights are on 3pm to 10pm. He still hides for part of the time when the lights are on but I notice he's the most active when I approach the tank. I believe he has started to figure out that I'm the bringer of food. So whenever he sees me he starts to come out of his hiding hole and looks at me and seems to say "Hey you, are you going to feed me yet? Look I'm right here, so now that you know where to find me....get me some food already!"

Thanks and good morning and Merry Christmas to you (and everyone else) too

I also have these pic's from a week ago. It's right after he ate a big silverside. If you look close enough you can see the big lump in his belly.

When you get a chance send me a pm with the steps you do to post the pics and we can figure out why. No rush though... Enjoy your Christmas!!

Just a guess but since you're using photobucket ... you copy and paste the "img" tags from there and it already includes them so you don't have to add another set. Ie., if you're pressing "insert photo" from here and then copy-n-pasting, you'd get a double set of tags.

Yeah mine is the same way, ie., comes out at 10pm and looks mighty annoyed with me if I don't have the food ready. It is nice that he associates me (and the tongs) with food but I don't think he's out much during the day otherwise. His burrow is a rock with a lot of caves and his favourite entrances to the burrows are themselves buried in a cave. So I'm quite sure he's comfortable and happy, I just did too good a job at providing for his security. At least I get to see him at feeding time but I got to thinking that we sure pay a premium for these guys for only getting to see them for 5 minutes per day whereas with tangs and etc. they're always out. (Not an expression of regret, just more a general observation).

I can't convince mine to try silversides at all. Sounds like he's the odd man out though, everyone else who has one seems to be able to feed those.

fishoholic 12-25-2009 05:48 PM

I think your right about the image tags, but I'm too lazy to go back and delete the extras.

Maybe mine is the odd one, right now he will only eat silversides. He used to eat mysis and krill, but he turns his nose up to it now and looks at me and says "What's this junk?! Silversides only please"

Yeah.. can't deny that.
Though she is pretty good now. Only 2 years of extreme puppy nutiness.
