170G Zoa Dominated Mixed Reef Tank

Tank Specs:
170g Euro Braced Peninsula style 6' by 2' by 22 inches.
Durso Stand Pipe with Internal Overflow
8 54W Tek5 T5 system
29g Sump with 6 inch deep sand bed and Euro Reef 135g
30g Fuge with deep sand bed and Red Mangroves
Soon to be 17g fuge

Recently swapped from a daylight spectrum to a more actinic spectrum (As I saw an interesting post on reefcentral). I'm very happy with the results, in addition with dosing Vit C I have seen increased growth and color.

Loooook at all that butterfly food. Yum yum !!

Seriously though, very nice.

What was this key crucial learning you made regarding more actinic less daylight?

Leah 12-18-2009 11:07 PM

Thanks Blue and yes Leah I added 2 new tangs, another mimic and the valmingi. Unfortunately my powder brown got really beaten up and died a few days ago .

Cool effect! I mean the whole zoo dominated reef thing, its not often you see such a large tank that full of zoos. Well done.

wow very nice job.
love the simple layout
its unfortunate that we have to put so much live rock in our systems for biofiltration i think less rock looks better
amazing clean and simple...

DSB'S and mangroves in the sump/ fuge is the trick, and a big emphasis on those mangroves they are power nitrate reducers plus they look sweet and my pistol shrimp/ goby pair use there roots as burrow supports for there house. Thanks for the compliment though! I will upload some more photos the fish tonight.

Some newer photos of the tank, my visa is in a bit of pain right now. These are with actinics only.

lorenz0 01-20-2010 11:37 AM

kat 01-20-2010 12:16 PM

Surprisingly the polyps are actually white, which is really odd as the orange color seems to be getting more intense but the polyps have just stayed white , nice looking piece all the same. Hows your face feeling?

Yes just the 2 of them, when I find another 2 female square backs I will add them to the tank so I have a total of 4. I think from now on all of my tanks will be peninsula style, I'm really liking the look of it too.

Very sick looking tank and zoas! I cant stop staring at them all.

Myka 10-27-2010 03:09 AM

Very nice, as usual! Sweet Rhizzo too!

I have these Zoas too, and am having little luck. Are you doing anything special with them?
