Golf...

Anyone/everyone here golf? I am planning to make it my "big expenditure project" of 2004. I am looking at all those cheap sets you can buy from places like Sport Chek and so on. I'd like to get into it for $500 or less, not counting the cost of actual games... I have a ride-on with height-adjustable blade, thinking I'll make myself a putting range and so on.

EmilyB 09-13-2003 04:44 AM

Crud....don't distract Barry okay..... I already bought him those ping things.

EmilyB 09-13-2003 04:44 AM

BTW, he has his old set of clubs for sale.

Jack 09-13-2003 04:46 AM

Yup, I'm a hockey guy myself but golf is eh. okay. You don't need all the clubs to start off with. You could easily play a par 3 with only a club or two and a putter. That's probably good enough to start off practicing. I found I play like adam sandler in the movie happy gilmore so im sticking with hockey. I threw my 7 iron 80yrds at the driving range last year so that was the last time I attempted golf for life.

Look in the buy and sell for a used set.

I would not recommend buying from sportchek or any other non golf only retailer.

Id PM Deb and find out what shes selling.

Greatest Game !!! ... no other sport like it ... truly a match against yourself and the course ... Wendells advice is a sage one ... a good set of clubs will allow you to pursue this fine sport for years to come

Cheers

4G's for clubs, guess he is pretty good.

I still have a tough time spending $3 per ball on the used Pro V1's.

Great game and I do it ocasionaly but you sure need to be wealthy to play.
Or just not have a reef tank.

Old Guy 09-13-2003 02:03 PM

My addiction to golf is going on 35 years or so. I play as often as I can and even host 2 tourneys a year. Just remember that golf is a game that is truly learned by few. If the game gets too frustrating, take a lesson or two. It is probaly cheaper than continually chunking balls into the water hazards.

Hey Wendall,
Must be nice to afford a 3 buck ball and golf fees too

GOLF

I love golf i play 4 times a week.I'm a 7 handicap.I use taylor made clubs.Actually i have a set of taylor made graphic irons for sale.Golf is the next best sport to hockey.

AJ_77 09-13-2003 03:43 PM

Quinn, if you can find decent clubs suited to your size, swing, etc, then you'll be miles ahead. Try to find a smaller pro shop/school where they don't take themselves too seriously... And a half-dozen lessons to get you started will make it WAY more enjoyable, and avoid the water-hazard chunking and other pitfalls, for sure.

You've got a pile of good advice here, grasshopper. Have fun - there's nothing like connecting well and seeing that little ball disappear into the distance...

(Added bonus: Happy Gilmore is the finest golf movie ever made. Gotta watch that one a few times to get you going.)

Golf does not have to be expensive. I have been a volunteer at the Whistler Golf Course for over 8 seasons. Look at some of your local courses and see if they have or if you have the time to be a volly. Many courses offer such a program with a commitment of between 4-8 hrs per week, and includes free golf, discounted lessons, retail, etc.

I had my clubs made for me about 5 years ago and still going strong!

Have a great time, and like Reef keeping, golf takes PATIENCE!

Best,

Rob

Sorry Alan, but I think that Happy Gilmore takes an extremely close second to Caddyshack, still a classic!

Although I have to admit, you would be hard pressed to find a scene as funny as the one between Bob Barker and Adam Sandler! (Filmed just down the highway from me at Furry Creek Golf Course)

I'd check out ebay. I'm going to purchase a new set of irons this winter myself. I did a lot of shopping around and found that you can't beat the prices on ebay. Here's a link to the iron sets: http://listings.ebay.com/aw/plisting....html?from=R11

A good example of the difference in price would be the irons I'm going to buy: Taylor Made RAC LT irons (3-PW) retail for $1700 CAD at best ($1300 CAD on sale) here in Victoria but here they are on ebay with a buy it now price of $479 USD ($653 CAD)! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=18961 :crazyeye:
