Can the RedSox beat the Yankees and win the AL East?
I know Boston's starting rotation drops off pretty fast after Martinez and Lowe but their bullpen is decent and their offense is amazing this year. Could this finally be the year for the long suffering RedSox fan?

Thanks Deb
I'm expecting it to be a close Poll. |
NOT!!
|
Pluff, I thought all you maritimers bled BoSox blue and red.

Alright, so apparently the majority of you don't really like baseball or lacrosse.
FWIW: the Sox handed the Yankees their worst shutout loss in years yesterday. |
The who? The what?? Who is AL???
You got me with this one, Troy. Wait, is it BASEBALL?!? What do I win?? |
Bunch of freakin' reef geeks!
 |
Nope, not gonna happen. I'm the farthest thing from a Yankees fan, but I don't think they can do it this year.
Here's what it boils down to: Garciapara and Soriano are excellent hitting middle infielders that can make some spectacular plays, but they're both prone to making errors on routine balls. The guy who screws up least often will likely be on the winning team. Being that a bobbled ball at shortstop usually leads to a guy getting on base while at second base Soriano could still recover and record the out I'd say Garciapara's errors will prove to be more devastating. Mariano Rivera doesn't seem to have the command or the presence that has made him a sure thing the last few years, but what he still has is that intangible - playoff experience. Byung-Hyun Kim has some playoff experience as well but we all know how pretty that was  David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez are hot right now, and if they can keep it up in the playoffs then that will give them a fighting chance. However, the Yankees pulled Luis Sojo out of the coaching staff to add to the lineup and with clutch hitting Nick Johnson the Yankees could pull themselves out of just about any hole in the playoffs  Guys who are likely to choke and be tagged with the goat label: David Wells, Byung-Hyun Kim, Jeff Weaver (if he sees the mound), Tim Wakefield, and Johnny Damon. I'd personally like to see the Giants against the A's in a California battle (gotta like Oakland as a small market team that can succeed). |

Neither has made more than 20 errors all year, do you think it'll be that much of a factor? Mariano Rivera doesn't seem to have the command or the presence that has made him a sure thing the last few years, but what he still has is that intangible - playoff experience. Byung-Hyun Kim has some playoff experience as well but we all know how pretty that was I agree, although, Kim was still on the winning side. I'm not sure if he was voted MVP though ;). David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez are hot right now, and if they can keep it up in the playoffs then that will give them a fighting chance. However, the Yankees pulled Luis Sojo out of the coaching staff to add to the lineup and with clutch hitting Nick Johnson the Yankees could pull themselves out of just about any hole in the playoffs This is where Boston has a huge advantage if you ask me. They're a hitting machine this year. Bill Mueller is on fire. And to think I was choked when they got rid of Hillenbrand. Guys who are likely to choke and be tagged with the goat label: David Wells, Byung-Hyun Kim, Jeff Weaver (if he sees the mound), Tim Wakefield, and Johnny Damon. Hmmm...I have nothing to add other than; Kim will do fine (crossing fingers and praying to every known god in the universe). I'd personally like to see the Giants against the A's in a California battle (gotta like Oakland as a small market team that can succeed). It would make an alright series as long as there isn't an earthquake. I do like the small market angle. The A's have done an amazing job. I kind of like the idea of the Cubs and RedSox but then you're guaranteed to have a riot no matter who wins and who looses. Two cities likely go up in flames. |
yay, the reefers are kicking butt

Yeah I realize neither of them has made a significant number of errors this season, but they seem to be great with the circus plays in the hole, but make their errors on routine plays - in the playoffs that'll crush your chances and play mind games with you for the rest of the playoffs.
I'd like to see the Phillies make it through in the NL Wild Card. I'm a big Omar Vizquel fan and after he left Seattle to go to Cleveland I became a big Indians fan. During that time I watched Thome develop and learned to like his smash mouth style of gritty play (he just exudes that Pete Rose mentality of overcoming athletic shortcomings with determination - he just looks like a ball player). And my reason for wanting the Giants to last long into the playoffs is kinda selfish - a lot of my research on motor learning this year is going to focus on baseball swing biomechanics and Bonds has arguably the most efficient swing in the history of the game. Jeez, it's a quarter to twelve on Friday night and I'm responding to this . . . there's good beer to be drinking and brain cells to be killing. See ya! :drinking: |
Troy, as of right now (tie game, bottom of the 9th, 2 out) Kim's looking like he's leading the race for the goat, but Garciaparra just about threw that one away to end the game!
|
Can you believe it? BoSox back from 2 games down to A's and have a split heading back to Fenway where Pedro will take the mound. Wakefield pitches 7 strong innings? I just wonder what happens in Game 4, do we get Burkett on the mound against Wells? If so, advantage Yankees.

Baseball    Who gives a rat's a**  The closest thing to anything fishy is when they throw Octopodes (correct plural, because Octopus is Greek) on the ice. Oh, sorry that is hockey.
 :BIG: |
I just dont think they have the depth to beat New York. Last night for example. And Pedro cant go until game 7 again, which may be to late.
I dont know why everyone hates the Yanks. Seems to me Boston is a pretty arragant bunch, with all the home run postering, pointing and a certain pitcher, has always been a whinny. Cubs all the way. |

I'm kinda glad you guys are all over this stuff - I really don't have time to follow it, but I do have time to check this thread...
  |
Doug, you're either a Sox fan or you're not, it's not always a pleasant endevour, I was just as irritated as you when ol' Manny sat in the box for a month admiring his shot. I don't think Lowe was grabbing his junk though and I think Tejada needs a tissue. I agree the match-up favours the Yankees. Boston's big hope is Pedro and Wells sucking in Game 5. Nothing wrong with the Yankees either, I like a lot of their players.
