B-Ionic

I am going to use this on one of my tanks.

I have buffered the Alk to 3.54 and turbo'd the Ca to 415.

Is this a good starting point for the two part, or should I tweak it anymore.
(no sps involved)

Guess not!

Go for it. I think thats a great starting point. Let me know how that stuff works out. I've got Kent Liquid Reactor. I think I should have gone for the good stuff

It's not that the product doesn't work. I just found that I used a hell of a lot of it! It isn't really cost effective in the long run unless it is a small tank. I was dosing 50-60ml of each per day and couldn't keep up, then I tried kalk, now I use a reactor and kalk to maintain levels.

EmilyB 09-06-2003 03:49 AM

Yes, Jack, but I'm not dosing for SPS...

But they're so pretty!!

EmilyB 09-06-2003 04:15 AM

What exactly do they do again.......

A jonny V reactor works very well Deb!
Alot more money savings in the long run

So what is the good stuff Christy? I use Seachem is there something that works better? I agree with Jonathan it's a calcium reactor but if $35 buys reef advantage and $350 buys reactor that's a lot of weeks of allowance.

christyf5 09-06-2003 05:59 AM

Well I was thinking a two parter may be better than what I've got but ultimately I'm getting a reactor as quick as one can be built

Jack 09-06-2003 06:03 AM

I'm on it christy!

Does the Turbo calcium work well? Is it safe to use? I heard that stuff is powerful stuff. I have used the liquid before. Can you make a big batch of the powdered stuff and store them in the empty liquid containers and use them like the liquid stuff?

christyf5 09-07-2003 09:25 PM

I think the turbo calcium is just to get your levels up right away and then you use something else to maintain it. Turbo calcium is CaCl so I would imagine the chlorine biproduct wouldn't be all that fantastic for your tank.

Christy :)

Not only what Christy said but you'd have an awful time keeping your alkalinity up.

As a side point, the "two part" additives have a side effect of raising your salinity over time. The additives are usually made of various chloride salts (as Christy mentioned) and also Sodium salts (like sodium bicarbonate, etc). The combination of this has the effect of raising the amount of sodium chloride in your tank. I've been using B-ionic in my tank for a few years now and while it works great, I have to watch my salinity as the months go by.
