Wide 90 Gallon build!
I'm in the process of a 90 gallon build right now and would love to share it with this board. I find its great to be able to show other people how we go about our builds helps us learn new things and advanced the hobby!!
So here we go! The tank is 90 Gallon but not your standard measurement 90, This is the footprint 48 Long x 24 Deep X 18.5 High. The tank was purchased off another site member. Here is the equipment list i got right now. Tank: 90 Gallon 48 x 24 x 18.5 - Made by Miracles Sump: Acrylic 36 x18 x 16 Stand: Metal tube stand Lights: ATI Sunpower 6x54W Return pump: Poseidon Ps3 Flow Pump: Vortech Mp40w Skimmer: Euro-Reef Rs-80 Rock: BRS Reef-Saver Rock On to the pictures: The stand and tank waiting in the garage. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2525/...1880181431.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2518/...8816a7aefb.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2429/...7e6beb959e.jpg Poseidon ps3 pump which is so small i am impressed! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3488/...6506da6b1e.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2596/...e3589f1a6f.jpg Last bit is the rock that came in yesterday, 50 pounds of BRS Reef saver rock. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2655/...040db3d06b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3495/...bdbb911409.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2596/...3f8fdf27e9.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2605/...61f9990f84.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2506/...6024856f90.jpg That's all for now hopefully i can get an overflow box tonight and put that in place on the tank, Sunday is when i can start to move things in place in the basement and work on getting it setup. |
I like the look of the BRS rock... thinking about using that reef saver rock on my next tank!
Curious what it cost for 50#'s shipped? EDIT: Just realized you're not in calgary, so shipping of the rock is kinda pointless to tell me.. lol |
what are your first thoughts of the reef saver rock. I have previously ordered the Fiji and Spagetti rock from BRS and liked them both. On my next tank I was planning on repeating my order but they no longer ship that stuff to Canada so my only choice would be the reef saver stuff.
|
First thoughts on the rock is its well worth it extremely pleased, i had a few reasons i went with the dry rock to prevent bad hitchhikers from entering my tank nothing more painful then dealing with aptasia and other crap on a new build, less stress on an actual living reef a big plus.
Some cons is longer cycle time, and well its dry dead rock so you do have to seed it and wait but meh i think the pros out weight the con in this case by far that my opinion. |
Good to see another Toronto person on here.
I'm looking to do a build next year a little bigger (120, so 24" tall), and a very similar equipment list :) I'm curious how much the rock was to be shipped to you :) |
Tagging along I have always wanted to see a 90 wide build.
|
I am in the process of planning out the plumbing and could use some help on how best to lay it out.
Attachment 5174 That is a quick and dirty picture of what i am thinking on how to lay it out. What i need help on is where to place the unions and where to place the ball valves. I am also thinking of splitting the drain line so i can divert some of the water to a 10 gallon mangrove tank but that's a plan not confirmed yet. Help would be great thanks! |
instead of a threadxslip adapter, use a threadxthread adapter with a street elbow - it'll save you a few inches behind the tank.
Where'd you get the metal stand? |
Why can I not see the attachment? I only see info about it such as size and views?

So i have this overflow box its 3 sided i need to cut one of the sides with the teeth off so i can place this in the corner of my tank i did the measurements and it should be more then fine.. each side is 6" each so the 2 sides will be 12 inches of area.. |
You gonna love your PS3 pump. It's not just small, but super, super quite. I don't see many people using poseidon pumps thou, I wonder why.
Good luck with your build and keep the updates coming. |
What did u use for ur overflow box and what did u use to cut out the slits ??
|
i got my PS3 pump used
it the best pump i have ever hade other than it rases your water temp a lil lots of power for its size |
I need some help with what height to mount my overflow box..
Its 2 sided 6" inch each side its going to be mounted in the corner of the tank. The box is 6" high the teeth cut are 1" and a bit deep ... At what height do i mount it right to the top rim of the glass or a little lower ? |
Quick update before the weekend! Everything i need is in stock and ready to go it can't be at a better time either i am off work till December 4th so i have plenty of time to setup and tinker with the new build.
First picture painted my wall that is behind the tank a dark blue the tank looks nice when its in front of it. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2771/...3b307e24_o.jpg Next is my Sump was finished this week and was able to pick it up on Thursday looks great and should be nice the dimensions are 36 long x 18 wide x 16 high. 3 chambers return section with a skimmer section and a fuge section. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2602/...f1755b3a_o.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2579/...de6631ea_o.jpg Next I've had for awhile its just been tucked away is my lighting 6 bulb 54w ATI Sunpower can't wait to have this mounted. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2546/...12457090_o.jpg And last bits is plumbing i picked up from JJ Downs the other day turns out they are 8 mins drive from my work so i ran out during lunch and gave them a list they hooked me up with what i need. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2672/...cfb11385_o.jpg So far couldn't be happier with how things are going, i am in the process of thinking up a new skimmer looking at the Vertex Cone 170 or the Super reef xp2000 also i am looking at putting a controller into the system but that's a little more further down the road. But come Monday afternoon build starts dry fit all the plumbing, mount the lights, level the stand and so on. |
Wow no work until the 4th and you have everything needed to start? You sir are the definition of lucky! Looks really good already...is the orange a primer?
|
Yes yes benefits of working shift work and having 2 years of vacation banked lol i have to use something like 46 days of vacation but when i book 4 days off if i plan it right i am off for just about 2 weeks so the time goes a long way.
the orange is actually more like a peachy color my parents put together i think we had mass amounts of paint left over from the house they mixed it all and they painted the whole basement haha i think they were bored that weekend. |
Haha they just mixed their leftover paints? Let me just say I like the blue =) So you're going to spilling copious amounts of salty water and skimmate all over mom and dad's basement? Do they know yet lol?
|
yah i went up north one weekend came back and the basement was painted some random color lol.. Oh ya they know about it all i got my 65 running in the kitchen right now.
They actually wanted me to put the new tank in the hallway upstairs but I'm not totally sure on the structure of the floor so its safest in the basement. Also i am going to be buying a house of my own in 2010 summer I'm 26 time to get out just saving for the largest down payment. |
Its wet!
Took just about the better part of 2 and a half days to fill but its done now, rock, sand and salt are in a mixed now is the long wait for the cycle to take place and do its thing. Below are some pictures of it up and running now, I still have to do some tweaks i had a wicked micro bubble issue but that was solved ripped apart the plumbing and reversed the bulkhead and gave it a good tighten and no more micros. I got the Reefkeeper lite hooked up but right now my second power bar seems to be not working waiting to hear from Digital aquatics on this one, i also still have to think of how i am going to skin the stand. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2711/...a4478e37_o.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2539/...df8ee2e0_o.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2589/...e95e90aa_o.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2498/...d42a78bb_o.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2498/...d42a78bb_o.jpg |
i would suggest opening the intake valve all the way, instead of having it 1/4 closed because it will put less stress on the pump. Just use the output valve to adjust.
