170G Build- Transfer complete!!!

My current 175g system consists of 4 tanks all plumped together so I have decided to consolidate everything into a single 6 footer with a 30 sump and 30 fuge. This should give my white ringed tang some more room and let me get him a few more buddies !

The new tank is being built at elite aquatics, it measures 6 feet by 2 feet wide by 22 inches high and should be done within the week. Going to do a peninsula style with all of my LPS on a mountain around the over flow and all of my zoa colonies on a massive rubble pile on the other side of the tank.

Excuse my horrible paint skills but here's a basic diagram.
http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/8243/tankvieqw.jpg

Current stock to be transferred from my two main tanks includes:
2 False Percs
2 Mandarin Dragonets
1 Thread Fin Cardinal
1 Dwarf Flame Angel
1 White Ringed Tang
various inverts

I'm interested in Tangs, Anthias and pretty much anything that anyone recommends for a 170g. Need to find some tang species that don't eat zoas as that's the focus of the tank but am open to suggestion. Anyone have any recommendations for fish are useful for a fish tank but are pretty interactive?
I will post more info about the system when I get a chance,
Levi

i'm digging your idea with the mountain of lps and a garden of zoa's

sadly for my taste i already think you have a perfect socking list. only thing i would add is red scarlett hermits, i just think they are cool

Myka 10-30-2009 01:14 PM

I have never heard of a White Ringed Tang. A Google search comes up with nothing as well. Does it go by another name?

I can't wait to see this tank's progress. Looks very nice! I like your ideas. :D

xtreme 10-30-2009 02:40 PM

I have numerous tangs and have never seen any of them show interest in my zoas.

kien 10-30-2009 03:16 PM

I have 4 Tangs and none of them have ever expressed interest in any of my zoos either.

As for stocking, I suggest a red coris wrasse! j/k!

Anyway, looks like you have a lot of open space so schooling fish would be cool. Perhaps barletts anthias?

Perhaps he means gold rimmed?

Can't wait to see this new tank! Keep us posted. As for tangs, I enjoy my Regal for color and Naso for personality. There's lots of cool reef safe wrasses you can look into as well but you'll need to jump proof the tank.

Zoaelite 10-30-2009 04:27 PM

Ahah Kien, thanks for the laugh spit a little coffee out on that one ! Hmmm, don't know where I heard that tangs ate zoas perhaps I should be asking are there any larger fish besides angels that will pick at zoas that I should stay away from?

Sorry Identification of the tang was on this page:
http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=53073
Never really had a definitive answer because he looks like 4 or 5 that people suggested to me, perhaps someone on here knows?

Thanks everyone, I'm so pumped for this tank I'm actually loosing sleep .
When I get home today I will post some more info and get a few photos of the stand.

Looks like a Tomini Tang, just hasn't developed the distinct yellow parts of the fins yet.

You might be right sphelps, I will grab some more photos of flash right away here so we can try and make a positive ID. What ever he is he eats nori right out of my hand and has to be the funniest fish I have ever watched so I'm happy to send him to the 170.

TANK IS BUILT!!! All i can say is WOW, if anyone's looking for custom tanks give Colby at elite a call. The tank has beveled edges, is completely polished, has a sweet over flow, Euro braced and has to be one of the nicest tanks I have ever seen in person! Can't wait to set it up.

Some photos:
These are the 2 tanks that will be torn down and transferred to the new one. Should be fun, 3 hours of aquascaping is like 3 hours of expensive sweedish massage for me !

The stand and its location:
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/879/dscf9395.jpg

Placing it here will work great as you can completely see the tank from 3 sides. The transfer should happen within the next week ! I will make sure to photo document the whole thing so everyone can see.

Flash

Here' some more photos of Flash Sphelps, any ideas? He eats like a pig and will practically eat everything. I think hes around a year old now and is just starting to develop a tail spike. At night time he goes ghost white during the day he's the colors pictured.

I hope your right Leah that would be amazing!!! I guess I will have to wait and find out. Here is what live aquaria has to say about it.

The Black Spot Tang, also known as the Black Spot Surgeonfish, is a hard-to-find gem for advanced aquarists. While juveniles may not feature standout coloration, with maturity and proper care, this fish develops beautiful orange accent markings against deep blues, blacks, and browns.
I payed like $25.00 for him so if he turned out to be a Black spot that would be a ridiculous find!

Leah 10-30-2009 10:49 PM

He is gorgeous and very rolly polly too! Fantastic deal, did you post a picture of him before?

xtreme 10-30-2009 11:07 PM

I have a Bariene Tang and its colors are definitely not the same as yours. Unless that is how they look when juvenile. I remember seeing that tang when I was at your place. Very nice tang regardless of what species it is.

Is it a Acanthurus Bariene?

In the last 2 months hes started developing blue/ yellow lines on his dorsal and ventral fins. Here's a few more photos, xtreme did you get yours as a juvi or an adult?

Possibly Ringtail tang--acanthurus blochii. Beautiful fish whatever he is. I think a naso tang would be a great tankmate for him. They have great personality too; very interactive i find.

sphelps 10-31-2009 12:01 AM

It's looks like it could be an Atlantic blue tang from the Caribbean, it may be in the transition from juvenile to adult. Does it look like it's got horizontal lines forming on the body?

ocean diver 10-31-2009 01:54 AM

I would have to go with a Bariene Tangs, aka Blackspot or Eye-Spot Tangs.

reefcanada 10-31-2009 03:31 AM

Tang ID

It is more than likely an Acanthurus grammoptilus I have one as well and this is the one that comes close to matching. Nice new Tank.

kien 10-31-2009 03:51 AM

In other words we have no idea what it is, other than the fact that it is a tang (of some sort!)

lastlight 10-31-2009 03:55 AM

That couch will be prime real-estate once you're through! I'd be makin trouble so I could sleep on the couch every night.

Quiz time. Anyone guess where Dez would put his tank in this shot?

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/879/dscf9395.jpg

Zoaelite 10-31-2009 07:14 PM

Best part about it Brett is that my bed and work desk are like 4 meters away from the tank. I will get some whole basement photos right away here, and let me guess Dez's tank would go right where the mirror is?

I would recommend the powder brown tang A.japonica.
I one with the orange on it.
I would not recommend the following because they are very difficult tanks to keep often getting sick for no apparent reason and dying and taking a few of their tank mates with them
---powder blue tang
---gold rim tang
---achilles tang

Go slow with the additions to the tank though to give your tank time to adjust.

Really nice tank and pics.

karazy 11-01-2009 01:40 AM

i saw your tank today. it looks great.

Thanks for the suggestion, I was interested in a Powder brown so I will do a little more research on them:biggrin:. In which order should I be adding them?

New photos of the tank as I just brought it home, will be doing the swap over on Wednesday after my last class at around 3.

Wow, how much Coral Snow are you dosing? My tank doesn't get nearly that cloudy when I dose it. All I see is a little puff when it goes through.

Millepora_Maniac 11-03-2009 12:46 AM

Dude, that tank is SWEEEEEEEET... I love the fact that it has no plastic caps or trims or anything, just nice clean glass. Mint.

I have a problem when it comes to dosing Coral snow, It never seems to hurt anything when I OD the tank but I over use it when I dose. Thanks Mili, can't wait to see new stuff in it!

Zoaelite 11-03-2009 01:33 AM

It would be nice if Zeo put an ingredient list on there bottles, always scared to put the stuff in the tank. KORALLEN-ZUHT. DE is just so assuring .

Spend a few months deciding which tangs you really like the most and that have a high likelihood of survival, wait a few months a choose very healthy tangs. Alert, plump, clear eyes, no spots or tears and than add them all at once to your tank with the lights off a keep the lights off for a day or two day Also avoid approaching your tank during that time to avoid stressing the fish.

Good Luck

PS make sure it is A.japonica The powder brown with the orange on it as they are often mislabeled and the golden rim tank is virtually impossible to keep

Zoaelite 11-03-2009 02:41 AM

Thanks, I was told that you should add your tangs at the same time to reduce aggression so I guess that is incorrect?

I have run into a problem, I was just told that it will take appx. 2 weeks for the silicone to dry before I should leak test it. Before this I thought it was 24-48 hours, anyone have some insight here? Tank was build Thursday morning and I want to set it up on this Wednesday so appx. 160 hours of drying time.

I think Colby is playing it safe with your tank.. When mine was done he said 48 hours was fine. I would have filled it within 48 hours too if I wasn't out of town. Ended up filling it on day 7 after receiving it i think.

Zoaelite 11-03-2009 04:32 AM

Only problem I have right now is that my current 65g stand is buckling, its made of particle board and after 6 years of floods and spills the cracks are scaring the crap out of me. Colby has been great considering the conditions and the tank was made really fast but it would be peace of heart for me to do the swap ASAP.

Here, what do you think?

Levi I did post that you should add them at the same time. Just wait a few months for you tank to settle out. Your tank is big enough to add them all at once.

Oook, sorry didn't read that properly. Yes I will be waiting a little while before I add anything new, with all the stuff coming from my 2 existing tanks the 170 will already be packed.
