My Seahorses Just had babies!
 

I was feeding my horses today and noticed the males belly seemed a little bit flaccid. as i was inspecting the tank i noticed little babies!


I have no Idea what to do. It would be neat to try and raise them. If anyone can help out or has experience in this please help!

Wow! That's fantastic!! I really hope someone on the board is experienced with this to be able to help you.

What breed of seahorse are they? It depends on which breed they are as to what type of care they will need. (They could be pelagic or benthic.) The non-hitching pelagic fry would do best in a container that can keep them in suspension, like a bowl or one of those hex-shaped goldfish bowls.

In the meantime you could start up a batch of BBS and see if you can source out some rotifers.

I have a mated pair of Reidi's. They breed every 15 days to the day! It does really depend on which horses you have but it is pretty difficult to raise fry. They are going to need live food like rotifers. Then when they are large enough BBS. I tried for a while but failed many times. I now have been giving my fry to rayjay over on aquariumpros.ca. He actually made a lot of progress with them and I believe the oldest fry are about 4-5 months old :biggrin:

There are some good threads over there on his setups in the Seahorse/pipefish forums. Seahorse.org has a ton of info as well.

I have set up a little 5 gallon tank with a light and an airline producing about 2-3 bubbles/sec. i got some rotifers to help feed these little suckers as well as some brine shrimp hatching so those should be ready for tomorrow. I added a little bit of cheato from my fuge to add in some pods incase thats there choice of meal. No all i can do is try and keep them fed and hope for the best!

Do you know what species they are? have any pics?

They are the H. Kelloggi species.

Unfortunatly i cant get any pictures at the moment. My girlfriend took my camera on her trip to Victoria! So annoyed!

I found it best to use live greenwater in the nursery to feed any uneaten rots/brine and to consume some of the ammonia produced by the seahorse feces and urine. I also used ClorAm-X to be sure there was no ammonia to damage the fry.

These H. Reidi fry were 6 months old yesterday, 9 Aug. 09 for the oldest and the youngest 4 1/2 months. I have 56 left ranging in length from about one inch up to two and a half inches in length, tails uncurled. They are in a 2 foot cube with a 20g garbage pail sump containing reef rock.

Wow you have come out of the with great success! Unfortunatly due to a small hurdle of sugery and having to leave this first group of babies to the fish sitter it looks as though I'm down to one left. Hopefully I have another batch of fry soon in which case I can dedicate my full and healthy attention to! Thanks for the experiences. And tips I will continue up with ready for when it happens again
