Relocation
Hello
This is my first post in this lovely site. I am a new member in this wonderful reef community. My wife got a new job and we are re-locating to Canada, BC, Maple Ridge. I would appreciate if some one can tell me about Maple Ridge and the region from all aspects of life and of curse our amazing hubby. Thanks |
Not sure about Maple Ridge, but BC is an all around win in my books.
|
Maple Ridge is nice. Havnt lived there since I was a kid, but still go back to visit alot
|
I know nothing of maple ridge but welcome to Canada and Canreef
|
From what i remember when i was younger visiting it was a beautiful place
welcome to Canada :lol:and canreef also:lol: ((yeah to "100" posts)) |
Thanks for the warm welcoming
Any other thoughts on maple ridge? |
To me the lower mainland is all one gigantic metropolitan area (ie. one big enormous city), but if you can get past the sprawl and the crowding, it's a really pretty area, nice mild climate (if a bit wet perhaps, but if you like green then you're set), and of course some awesome recreation opportunities being in the coastal mountains. Where are you moving from? Earth is, of course ... something of a large planet so it could be warmer than what you're used to .. or colder .. or wetter .. or um .. drier ..

Ok! That’s fair and square!
My name is Eran. I am 36 and I am relocating from Israel! Since I can remember myself, I have always had an aquarium. I had it all, from my first 5g guppies tank. To a larger tropical fish tank, low-tech and high- tech planted aquariums, African Cichlids, Discus fish and so on! I even had a brackish water biotope tank with mangroves. I have always found saltwater aquarium irresistible and in the year 2001 I started my first saltwater aquarium, a marine biotope tank. Since then I have been hooked to the hobby and today I am the proud owner of a nice 125g SPS dominated reef aquarium. My new tank on day one- 15.09.08 http://lh4.ggpht.com/_uxCgBLJKy-Q/Si...w/15.09.09.jpg 12.12.08 http://lh4.ggpht.com/_uxCgBLJKy-Q/SU...2/P1160846.JPG 24.01.09 http://lh4.ggpht.com/_uxCgBLJKy-Q/Si...2/24.01.09.jpg 18.02.09 http://lh3.ggpht.com/_uxCgBLJKy-Q/Si...A/18.02.09.jpg Sadly I don’t have any newer pictures and I have just disassembled it:violin: Another aspect of the hobby for me is to be an active member of the saltwater aquariums community, helping friends taking first steps in the hobby, sharing information and with my friends and learning new techniques. I am also forum moderator in the leading saltwater aquariums community portal in Israel (www.reef-center.com). some more pictures to open your appetite:wink: http://www.reef-center-host.com/pix/...l_IMGP4169.jpg http://www.reef-center-host.com/pix/...l_IMGP4167.jpg http://www.reef-center-host.com/pix/...l_IMGP4177.jpg http://www.reef-center-host.com/pix/...l_IMGP4177.jpg http://www.reef-center-host.com/pix/...l_IMGP4203.jpg http://www.reef-center-host.com/pix/...l_IMGP4191.jpg http://www.reef-center-host.com/pix/...l_IMGP4186.jpg I did some special design with this tank and as soon as possible I will tell you all about it. Cheers |
 nice tank! Maple Ridge sounds nice too! I am lucky enought to live on Vancouver Island though
http://www.mapleridge.org/EN/index.html Situated on the shores of the mighty Fraser River and nestled against the Coast Mountains, Maple Ridge is a mecca of adventure for the outdoor enthusiast. Located 45 kilometers east of Vancouver, it is a progressive community well-known for its beautiful countryside and spectacular scenery. It is a community of urban sophistication that retains a sense of rural charm. Arts and recreation facilities abound, creating a culturally vibrant and active city for healthy living. Maple Ridge has become a year-round centre of festivals and festivities like the Jazz and Blues Festival, Maple Ridge Fair and the Santa Claus Parade. Its Town Centre is the focus of community life in the area, offering a state-of-the-art leisure/youth centre complex, library and performing arts centre. Numerous boutique-type stores are located in the area. |
Beautiful fishy's you have. Maple ridge is nice, B.C. is Beautiful - lots to offer.
It will be different then Israel, sure you will like it. Change is exciting! Can't wait to hear all about your tank set up too! Welcome Eran! |
Welcome to Canreef Eran..
Its always great to have another person join our community especially one who has the passion to teach but also the will to learn from others. I look forward to seeing your new tank build thread once you settle in to your new life. |

Course or curse?
|
Maple Ridge is a nice suburban/rural community east of the hustle and bustle of Vancouver and the more metropolitan suburbs of Burnaby and Coquitlam. Lots of acreages and farms, quite pretty. Nearby is Pitt Lake, the world's largest freshwater tidal lake, one of my favorite summertime boating/waterskiing destinations. Surrounded by mountains, with a great waterfall and marine campground it is really beautiful.
Welcome to Canreef and the Lower Mainland! There are several great SW stores in the area to support your addiction. |
What is a freshwater tidal lake? If you mean that it's a freshwater lake that has tides .. I'm afraid to tell you that Superior is somewhat larger and is FW and has tides. :)

Wiki knows all!
Excerpt from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitt_Lake "Pitt Lake is the second-largest lake in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, being about 53.5 square kilometres in area. It is about 25 km long and about 4.5 km wide at its widest, and is also one of the world's largest tidal lakes, its confluence with the Fraser being only a few miles upstream from that river's estuary into the Strait of Georgia. Its southern tip, where the Pitt River resumes, is 40 km east of downtown Vancouver. The upper Pitt River valley is a typical U-shaped glacial valley in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia. The over-deepening of the lower end of the valley over the span of the Wisconsin glaciation created a trough over 140 m below current sea level. After initial glacial retreat at around 13,000 years ago a saltwater fjord occupied this basin when relative sea levels were still ca 120 to 140m above current levels in the region. Unlike neighbouring Indian Arm and Howe Sound farther west this fjord basin became cut off by sedimentation of the lower Fraser River by ca 10,500 years ago and is now considered a tidal fjord lake." |

Hi you guys
Is there any local fish store in maple ridge? If not where is the closest one? Thanks |
Probably the closest to you is J&L...... although Aquatic Addictions is also close to you.
Basically for salt water the places to go are J&L, Aquatic Addictions, Ocean Aquatics & King Ed. Most (except King Ed) are site sponsors. Cheers, Vic |
They used to have Great White Pets in Pitt Meadows but I am not sure if they are still open or not.
They didn't have much of a salt water selection though. Cheers, Vic |

With the new Golden Ears bridge you can get to Aquatic Addictions by car fairly quickly. If you don't have a car then the easiest stores to get to are J&L and King Ed. Here is a map, if I missed any stores let me know.

Hi,
I am not there yet but you guys make me feel already at home :) |
Honey I ‘m Home....
OMG:lol:
Took me some time but I am finally here! Eventually we are located DT Vancouver. I wonder if there are any good Lfs DT Vancouver and its surroundings? Does anyone know how many Van’s are hooked to this hobby? |
The only shop downtown is:
http://www.aquariumswest.com/ But you can take the Sky Train to J&L & Island Pets in Burnaby........ also to King Ed Pets but you will have to walk a bit to get there. If you have a car it's pretty easy to get to the other stores. Cheers, Vic |
