Well my new 50 gallon tank just blew

Setup a new tank for the new place we just bought and what did I just come home to?

A flood. Not an inch of water in the tank.

All the softies are saging dry. Must of happened in the last 3 hours.

Tank was sumpless and super simple.

I guess I'm out.

Leah 05-05-2009 03:47 AM

So Sorry to hear that. What a thing to come home too!

Pazil 05-05-2009 03:49 AM

Sorry to hear that...WoW! Good luck with everything.

Lawrence

karazy 05-05-2009 03:51 AM

ouch!! that sucks!

did a whole pane of glass pop out, or it sprung a leak, or did a rock fall badly, or what?

Jack 05-05-2009 04:03 AM

Anyone want to pickup all the livestock and rock?

Jack 05-05-2009 04:04 AM

I think it sprung a leak on the bottom.

Jack 05-05-2009 04:12 AM

if you want to rescue drying liverock, sand and corals.

MikeP 05-05-2009 04:20 AM

That sucks man, sorry to hear about it.

fragNplug 05-05-2009 04:36 AM

Jack 05-05-2009 04:51 AM

Ya I hear you. I was here at 5:30 dropping something off, fed the fish, and when I got home at 8:30 there was no water.

Someone is coming for the livestock! Thank you!

Lance 05-05-2009 04:53 AM

Man, that SUCKS!

Delphinus 05-05-2009 05:03 AM

My God .. Sorry Jack

Jack 05-05-2009 05:26 AM

Well, the tanks taken down and outside. Carpets are all cleaned up and livestock is with a friend. Not to bad afterall. :eyeroll:

... just not sure if I'll setup a tank again.

Jack 05-05-2009 05:36 AM

No worries, **** happens... just usually its the other guy.

cprowler 05-05-2009 06:19 AM

Just finished putting everything in my sump, everything looks quite good considering.

I guess we'll see what survives over the next few days and you can figure out what you want to do, I think most of it will be fine.

Sorry about your luck, any idea as to why the tank would just break like that? I'm glad someone has rescued the corals.

Jack 05-05-2009 01:28 PM

Glad to hear everything looks okay so far. I don't want my stuff messing up your system.

Tank was bought brand new and I went sumpless to avoid any leaks or floods. The only thing that could of failed was the tank and it did just that. I can't belive it. Stand was strong and level.

Now see, thats the problem right there, if you drilled at least eight holes in it and ran a sump, a fuge, a couple closed loops and grow out tank you would have been fine! Seriously though I feel your pain, I had a 60 blow apart at two in the morning once, not fun. Just a little bump in the road, take some time to think things out, now's a good time for an upgrade:biggrin: hope it all works out for you.

I just checked on things and everything looks ok, all 5 fish are fine and the corals and rock look ok.

I'm going to make up some water and do a water change.

christyf5 05-05-2009 02:48 PM

Aww Jack, I'm sorry to hear this. I hope this doesn't keep you out for long.

I hate reading stories like these. Sorry to hear about that...I have nightmares about that very thing.

I've taken precautions so nothing short of my display breaking will ruin my main floor. But if it ever does...

I would have no option of rebuilding.

Chowder 05-05-2009 05:36 PM

Sorry to here that Jack. Hope you stay in the game.

Chris

Thanks.

Thats so awesome that the fish made it.

Tank was an All-Glass.

J&L opens at 11am so I will call Jeff in a minute.

I just took the rest of the day off and rented a couple of those carpet blower fans - just gottem' setup - I think it'll work for drying it out. I'll shampoo the carpet after the underlay is dry.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for all the kind words.

Jack 05-05-2009 06:42 PM

Windows are open, heat is cranked, bathroom fans are on. I just need a magic wand. Anything else?

I didn't think a 100% water change was gonna be this hard.

Rbacchiega 05-05-2009 06:49 PM

holy crap this sucks. what's the word from J&L?? Hope this doesn't put you out for long

Jack 05-05-2009 06:54 PM

Well the All-Glass tank wasn't setup on an All-Glass stand so I'm fcuked.

Rbacchiega 05-05-2009 07:02 PM

That's garbage. What a load of BS.

For sure that is BS!! Thats bad on J&L's part for not standing behind their customer. Should be able to overlook that. Sorry to hear about your mishap. That sucks.

Jack 05-05-2009 07:12 PM

Eh, don't sweat it. You sound more angry than I am.

I used to work there. I knew the policy.

If I knew the tank would explode in my living room after 1 week I woulnd't of bought it.

Jack 05-05-2009 07:16 PM

Funny, thinking back:

Fiance "you should get the 65 gallon, its only $4 dollars more"

Me "nah, don't want to go that big in case theres a flood"

Geez maybe I should change my name. Everyone always thinks I'm angry. Hard to communicate over computers.

Rbacchiega 05-05-2009 07:57 PM

oooh change it to
"Onlyslightlydisgruntledreefer"

That'd be fantastic.

So Jack, are you going to be grabbing another tank soon?

Drock169 05-05-2009 08:01 PM

Jeff wasnt able to do anything for you jack?

I cant believe that happened to you

GreenSpottedPuffer 05-05-2009 08:05 PM

Oh no Jack! Im so sorry to hear this! Terrible...

I remember you telling me how careful you needed to be in the new place too :(

Couldn't have been worse timing. This kind of thing has always worried me so much.

Hope you don't get out though. Good luck with whatever you do.

Pier Pressure 05-05-2009 08:13 PM

Are All Glass the same manufacturer that make Perfecto tanks? Because I had two of them (150 gallon) spring leaks about eleven months apart. Luckily we were home both times. They were on the correct stand, too. So sorry to hear about this.

fishoholic 05-05-2009 08:44 PM

Sorry to hear that happend to you. A little shocked that J&L wouldn't replace or reimburse you, even if it was on a different stand, it shouldn't of broke after only a week!

cprowler 05-05-2009 08:54 PM

I put Jack's T5 fixture up over that end of the sump (75g) and just about everything has opened up.

Not the best situation but I think it will work for a few days.

I'm making up some water right now for a 40g W/C tonight or tomorrow. I think I'll raise the height of the sump water level too.

Jack 05-05-2009 09:14 PM

Thank you very much for rescuing the fish and corals - a total loss would be tough to swallow.

I've sent Jeff @ J&L an e-mail.

Honestly the tank was great. I had it so simple, T5's, Softies, LPS, Gorgonians, easy fish, kalk top off, no sump.
