Check with Western Pump. Apparently they have a very good selection of fittings.

parkinsn 05-04-2009 11:34 PM

Red Coral has them in stock.

PVC gate valves are insanely hard to find in Calgary. Don't know why. Western Pump didn't used to have them, what they had that they called "gate" valves were in fact "knife" valves. Don't know if that's still true nowadays but I'd be surprised. I think Red Coral is about your only bet for a proper gate valve. Before Red Coral came along I always had to mail-order for gate valves. Ocean Aquatics and Bulk Reef Supply and J&L are places that will have them. Maybe mops.ca.

One can convert a knife valve to a gate valve if one was willing to DIY - just have to replace the stainless rod with stainless ready rod, do a little tapping & install a thumbscrew... It's extremely cost effective in comparison to buying a true gate valve...

Last time I did it, might have been due to the older tap - it did have an extremely slow drip at the threads coming out of the valve; but the previous 3 conversions didn't...

That would be a REALLY expensive valve - what would you be using it for?

not sure if it is wholesale only or public but when I managed a hardware store I ordered all of my PVC stuff from a place called Western International Plastics(Wipal) in Calgary , Davies Electric also carried a large inventory of PVC

Not too bad US Plastics is only $35, but then shipping. Thinking converting to a Herbie.

wickedfrags 05-09-2009 09:44 PM

I see the Spears are about 2x's this price - still much cheaper than the last time I shopped for these, likely because oil prices are so much lower. Never used a stand pipe myself.

FYI, we do have gates (and other specialty plumbing parts) and we are now online and ship...boggles my mind that Colby isnt willing to order you a $40 gate valve.

fragNplug 05-10-2009 03:58 PM

The only place i have seen the pvc style is at redcoral in the nw.

michika 05-10-2009 04:26 PM

I got both of my 2" ones from Red Coral as well. Best bet if you don't want to order from afar. The RC ones were cheaper by about $20 excluding shipping when I ordered mine last year around this time.
