RED CORAL “What Can You Make of THIS?” Contest!


Red Coral would like to propose a contest!


We would like to challenge 8 contestants to devise a CREATIVE and ORIGINAL use for the Midiflotor or Miniflotor Skimmer! Red Coral has 8 of these units in stock. Due to the incredible advancements in skimmer technology there is no longer a place in the marine aquarium hobby for these particular units when used as a skimmer. Therefore we are challenging the contestants to come up with another innovative use for this unit! Anything aquarium related… BE CREATIVE and Have FUN!

Red Coral has 8 of these skimmers, 4 of each size, available for contest use. To enter the contest a $25 Red Coral Gift certificate must be purchased (to be used in store or on our online store at the end of the contest). Nine independent silent judges will judge the contest. Contestants will have 2 months to complete the challenge and provide pictures and details of your new creation or creative use for this unit on Canreef. The contest will begin as soon as all 8 contestants have picked up their units from Red Coral. Contest is first come, first serve since we have only 8 units available!

The winner will receive a $175 Gift Certificate from Red Coral (to be used either in store or on our new online store) and hopefully all the contestants will also benefit from their creations with an innovative new use for this unit!


RULES:

1.Make whatever you choose using one of these 2 skimmers. It must be aquarium related. The idea is to try and find a creative new use for this skimmer.

2.You may use it as is or take it apart, but please use the bulk of the parts in your new creation. The judges will be taking into consideration how much or how little of the units are used in your creation.

3.The judges will be voting based on usefulness, most innovative, and as stated above, inclusion of skimmer parts.

Cool idea. I think my hubby would kill me if I got yet another piece of tank equipment just to have it hang around the house :razz:

If I give one to my toddlers, I'm pretty sure they would come up with a few fun uses for it. Not sure if it would actually benifit the tank though.:lol:

I'm in - picked mine up yesterday... :D Actually somewhat surprised, decided to see what the midi could do as a skimmer; it pulled out a fair amount of skimmate overnight; pretty comparable to the coralife 220 i used to run.

I have given the skimmer to my creative R and D department, it consists of a 4 year old and a 2 year old, they are not down with the rules yet as I don't think a balloon whacker or bug catcher fit.

Hi Carmen, Cheyanne and myself were in RC Friday morn getting our live rock and we talked to Kevin about the contest but in our hurry to get the live rock home we forget to pick up our contest piece. Can you hold one for us till Thursday-Friday till we come into town? Thanks.... Clayton

Sounds like a fun contest. I know what I would do with it but I have an old "sea clone" skimmer I converted & made use of already otherwise I would try to get in on this.

Im kinda impressed that these actully work well as skimmers, id be almost tempted to set one up, i just started to use ozone in my skimmer but this would make a better ozone chamber perhaps, and for the price if the ozone eats my plastic as iv read that it does it wouldnt be so bad.

If any have a great idea for a ozone chamber pm me.

You will have up to 60 days to complete the challenge! When you are finished your creation, please let me know. If everyone finishes before the end date we will judge early. I will be contacting some Canreef members to be silent judges.

Mine is done!!!

I decided on making an ozone reactor.
Firstly ozone is toxic in large quantity and used water should be ran thru carbon, as well as all air escaping from the unit.

My skimmer was happy with the ozone but i had to find a better way to rid myself of the smell.

This is my final work.
Skimmer cup filled with carbon over filter material to plug center hole to rid smell of ozone.

Bottom of skimmer surrounded by carbon bags inside a lees fish breeder plastic container.

Basically water is recirculating and kept in contact for a long time with the ozone/air mixture. (tested this with sand dropped into top of chamber to view some sand again was sucked back up into chamber without carbon bags at bottom)

So now this old skimmer has a new job, and I am happier for it.
If i was to add more water to my sump to raise the water level inside the reactor it would turn into a skimmer again, without the carbon at the top.

I would just use it for air mixing and water circulation on a nano tank
to increase O2 and flow

Its a "Chaeto" Reactor (aka Reef Bong).
Its a hang on back system, with chaeto and sponge filter on the end where the output is.

LOL I know, I'm a procrastinator (I hate it :p)

You'll have to let us know how well your Reef Bong really works. I think the concept is very clever. I can see you having to trim back the cheato from time to time though. Congrats!
