RO/DI Question

How often do those of you with an RO/DI change the carbon and prefilter?

Well depends on how bad your water is. Could be 6 months, a year.. but I think 6 months is about right for our local water.

This may be a dumb question, but do you have to change the RO membrane often or not at all?

The RO membrain should last about 3 years.. so long as you maintain it by flushing it every month. Its very expensive to buy another membrain.. Its practicaly the whole cost of the initial unit.

You can check your membrane by measuring the output after the RO and before the DI with a TDS meter. When it falls below 95% removal of the TDS in tap water, it is time to replace the membrane. We have done this once in two years, but we run a LOT of water.

Replacing cartridges also significantly depends on how much water you are running through the unit....

I replace my prefilter every 2 months and my carbon every three. If I notice pressure dropping below 75% normal, I replace more often.

Replace my Prefilter and carbon at 6 month intervals.

Do you have really high TDS feed water there?? Thats crazy.

Nope, just high algae. For $5 and $8 bucks, it's no big deal to change them.

StirCrazy 06-21-2003 03:24 PM

what i do is put a 3.00 5 micron filter ahead of my 1 micron and my carbon. this catches the algae in our water and allows me to go 6 months or more on the more expensive ones.

Ok, this may be an even nuttier question but...

which of the filters is the RO membrane? I have a 4 stage 50gpd from Jayson. Are the three large cannisters the filters that I would change every 6 months or so, or is it the cannister mounted to the top of the device?

The one mounted on the top is usualy the RO membrane...
