My Poor, Poor Liquor Store!

About 3 hours ago a man apparently had a heart attack while at the wheel and drove his pick-up through the front of my liquor store. About 2/3 of the truck was inside the store and just missed our employee. Luckily no one was hurt although she is quite shaken up. The truck caromed off another vehicle and passed between a power pole and a street sign, jumped the curb and plowed into the building. The truck ran right through the red wine display and it looks like a slaughter house in there with blood-red wine all over everything. Unfortunately I have no pics as I didn't think to bring my camera. It sure looks strange to see a vehicle sticking out of a building like that. They managed to pull the truck out without doing any more damage to the building. Apparently the driver had no valid driver's license and his insurance had expired, so I guess our insurance will be stuck with the bill.

Ow! That's painful!

I hope he gets a hefty charge. Did he survive the heart attack?

marie 03-17-2009 03:00 AM

OMG

That would explain all the sirens going screaming past my place

rocketlily 03-17-2009 03:00 AM

Sorry about your store, but I'm glad your employee wan't hurt.

Delphinus 03-17-2009 03:02 AM

Not that I don't think a crappy deal for you. Just reading the first sentence of your post had me thinking about a friend who was driving, had a heart attack and crashed. He didn't make it.

I hear ya. First thing I did when I got there was go to the ambulance and see if he was OK. All-in-all it could have been a lot worse. The fact that nobody was hurt is the most important thing. Walls and liquor can be replaced.

Wow and I thought I was having a rough go lately, hopefully everything is a quick fix and it gets back to buisiness as usual, that has been a bad intersection for quite some time, need to get yourself some of those concrete blocks for the corner. Need a hand consuming and or cleaning anything let me know.

Chowder 03-17-2009 04:38 AM

Sorry to hear about your store. Good to hear the guys ok.

 Funny how many offers I've had for guarding, cleaning, consuming, etc. Thanks, but we're good. Insurance adjustor is coming tomorrow and I'm sure will ok a cleaning crew. All your buddies were there tonight. I think the whole PR Fire Crew was there. (probably hoping to take some damaged goods home with them )

Aww Lance I'm sorry to hear about your store! But at least everyone was ok. If he has no insurance does that mean he doesn't have to pay for the damages? That's ridiculous! I'm sorry that he had a heart attack but no license and no insurance is probably a pretty good indicator that he probably shouldn't have been driving!! He's really lucky he didn't take someone else out with him.

....was he on his way to your store at the time?

fishoholic 03-17-2009 04:51 AM

I'm glad all the people are ok, sorry to hear your store isn't

I haven't any idea why he was driving. Definitely shouldn't have been. No, he wasn't coming to the store. Just passing through..........so to speak.

Sorry to hear that man, the same thing happened to me at a pet store I worked at years ago, a ladies flip flop got caught on the gas pedal and she floored her mini van right though the front doors, quite scary being in there when that happened. No one got hurt in this situation either, but could have been really bad.

christyf5 03-17-2009 03:15 PM

Man Lance that totally sucks. At least your insurance is covering it

I thought heart attacks are covered under the "act of god" policy (or something like that) and even if he had insurance they wouldn't have paid. Friend of mine got rear ended by a chick who claimed she had passed out at the wheel. My friends car was a writeoff and that was that, she didn't get it replaced nor was she compensated.

At least everyone is ok.

brizzo 03-17-2009 03:35 PM

Vehicles + store fronts is never fun :(

Thieves plowed a truck through the front doors of my work a couple weeks ago and stole thousands of dollars worth of tools.. and left us with a very big mess.

Kind of more related, there was a smash and grab in Vernon a couple weeks ago where the thieves drove a truck through the store front... Funny thing though, all the 'booze' they stole from the front of the store was non-alcoholic wine

What!? No video surveillance tape!

Leah 03-17-2009 04:58 PM

That comment could have only come from someone who lives in Surrey, tee hee!
Hope you can open back up quickly, I am guessing a few people will be right bent out
a shape with no liquor store.

The insurance company will attempt to recoup losses from ICBC which is legislated to provide basic coverage for all driver's in BC. ICBC will in turn make a claim against the driver personally for driving without a DL and without insurance (both of which are against the law) irrespective of whether he had a heart attack or not. Plus, there's the possible further investigation of drunk driving and other infractions against the driver. In other words, he'd better get a real good lawyer real fast.

Sorry about the store, but glad everyone is safe. Don't you have any security camera footage?

Our insurance adjustor came today to take pictures and measurements etc. Assumedly they will hash it out with ICBC. Our security cameras have everything on tape. It wasn't a smash-and-grab thing. The driver lost control of his vehicle for whatever reason, (we were told a heart attack), but I heard on the news today Police are still investigating. Last night the repair service came in and boarded up the gaping hole in the wall, while a clean-up crew got the inside half-way decent. We were open for business by 11:00 am. It looks kind of Mickey Mouse with temporary wooden shelves for the wine display, but at least we didn't have any down time.

WOW amazing you were open so quickly, St Paddy's day would have been a crappy day to be closed.

rocketlily 03-18-2009 02:12 AM

Perhaps you should look at this as a chance to remodel. Maybe a little tank in the store.
