I always run carbon on my softie tank,46g bowfront,colties,leathers,squamosa clam,mushrooms,kenya trees,frogspwn,greenstar polyps.

I run carbon in my mixed reef.

Heard good, wondering what's bad?

untamed 03-04-2009 02:25 PM

I've always run some carbon.

Tom R 03-04-2009 02:29 PM

I am on the ZEOvit program and on ZEOvit you run good carbon 24/7/365.

Yeah definitely run carbon.....yeah definitely carbon. Sorry, I just went Rainman on you.

Myka 03-04-2009 04:31 PM

I run high quality carbon either one day per week or 5 days per month. I try to do the one day per week, but it's a bit tedious. I absolutely do not run carbon 24/7. My tank is all LPS aside from some GSP.

Being on Zeo too I always use carbon.

I actually run it fluidized through a two little fishies phosban reactor. I use KZ carbon and change every 30 days.

fkshiu 03-04-2009 05:00 PM

I run carbon 24/7. Almost have to since I have a big ass leather in a tank with SPS.

Mrfish55 03-04-2009 05:03 PM

I use Chemi-pure (contains carbon and other resins etc) my water is allways crystal clear and notice no ill effects on corals.

Lance 03-04-2009 05:05 PM

I run a fairly large amount of carbon 24/7.

Jay180reef 03-04-2009 05:13 PM

I hear lots of pros, what are the cons of using carbon?

I have some ready to go in with a TLF reactor, but my system is so far fine without it. I don't run zeovit (because I don't know what it does yet :))

urbanhellfire 03-04-2009 06:18 PM

The only bad thing I can think about running carbon in a tank might be if your tank likes dirtier water.

I have a 33g soft tank that will not let me run carbon on it, it I do try everything looks off, but with my 110g I run carbon 24/7 and the soft frags that are in there are taking off.

Just make sure it gets changed out sooner rather than later.

Jay180reef 03-04-2009 07:34 PM

Okay I'll try it out and see how the corals respond. I don't have too many softies so it should be fine.

zazzoo 03-04-2009 08:32 PM

how long before i change out the carbon ?
i left mine for over a month and decided to change it yesterday and thought i ask the question

ocean diver 03-04-2009 08:55 PM

What kind of carbon do you find works the best, or just any active carbon will work?

zazzoo 03-04-2009 09:07 PM

im just using active fluval carbon ... cheap stuff
nothing to crazy like chemipure :D

reeferious 03-04-2009 09:09 PM

carbon how much to use

have been user of chemipure for god knows how far back. came into possession of some bulk carbon from brad(untamed) and ian of chem master. question is i've always purposely underfiltrate (physically and chemically) my tank which has app. 200 gal total volume yea i was using 1 pack chemipure good for 40 gal and replacing this every 3 months. very interested to know how much of this carbon i should be using starting out, replacement frequency and whether i should be using it continuously 24/7 the way i am using chemilpure. mixed sps, lps, softy tank with some honking huge leathers on bottom. water change 25 gals biweekly.l

fkshiu 03-04-2009 10:22 PM

I don't have the articles off hand, but carbon actually loses much of its effectiveness after a few weeks.

Chemipure is not a carbon per se, but a mixture of various ion exchange resins. Seachem and several other companies make similar products. I've used it in the past in FW and it works but I really wish they would tone down their wild marketing claims.
