Peacock Mantis at Rogers

If anyone is looking for a Peacock Mantis shrimp I saw one yesterday at Roger's Aquatics. It is a female.

They are really cute.

Man they are cool!

I saw two at J&L over the weekend and really wish I had a tank for one.

how much do they cost?

pterfloth 03-02-2009 07:52 PM

Rogers was asking $40

Whatigot 03-02-2009 07:54 PM

dang...
JL's were 90....

I would have bought one if they were 40.

Fenix 03-02-2009 08:09 PM

would one of those nano cubes be enough to support it say 6 - 12 gallons?
or will u need something a lot bigger for when it grows?

Whatigot 03-02-2009 08:13 PM

I have been told by someone who keepy many that for most species, a 10 gallon will suffice.

I have mine in a 12 aquapod.

Fenix 03-02-2009 08:14 PM

are they strong enough to break out of the glass by hitting it?

Whatigot 03-02-2009 09:02 PM

some breeds are...
but the stories of that actually happening are very few and far between.
try and find a story like that online...you probably won't.

Ocean City had one last week, it's 5-6"...huge. I don't remember the price.

"peacock" is used as a catch all name for almost any mantis in stores because they have no idea what it is. peacock mantis is also he correct common name for O. scyllarus (a potential tank breaker who requires minimum 30g as an adult). G. chiragra is a smaller species but can also crack a tank as it has the hardest hit pound for pound for any mantis; also reclusive, not a very good pet. If you can get a pictue of the beastie you are thinking of buying, I may be able to ID the species for you.
