What kind is it?

ocean diver 03-01-2009 02:18 AM

oh sorry, it is a crocea clam

rocketlily 03-01-2009 02:23 AM

Kind of exciting isn't it. I got my first one today as well.

subman 03-01-2009 02:27 AM

I almost came home with one today but thought a little more research was necessary so i'm gonna tag along.

Were you at Bayside Corals today by chance?? Is that where you bought it? I made it there today for the first time and saw some nice Croceas. :) They actually have quite a nice selection of corals there.

On the note of the Croceas...my advice is really strong lighting for those ones! Be sure to keep your calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium in check as well.

ocean diver 03-01-2009 03:28 AM

Yes it was from Bayside Corals, they had lots of nice ones.

digital-audiophile 03-01-2009 03:29 AM

Good lighting is the best thing for any clam :) They are cool creatures, it's easy to become addicted to them!

I wonder if it was you that was in there while I was in there...? I was wearing a black sweater and white jeans. I remember a couple coming in while I was there, and there was a guy there when I arrived I believe he was just checking out. Were any of those people you?

ocean diver 03-01-2009 03:38 AM

I was there around 4pm and I was wearing a brown leather jacket and my wife was wearing a black downfilled jacket. I also bought a very nice Aussie Duncan Coral.

Pretty sure you were the couple then. I remember the guy (you?) was asking about the Duncan frags, and the woman was wearing a dark jacket. I was scoping the display tanks' corals, and not really paying attention to the other customers. :D

were you with another guy and a girl, and said you were going to grow your own crab and eat it? Did you buy a damsel fish?

LMAO!!! No, not me. I didn't buy anything, my tanks are still in BC. White jeans, black sweater, blonde hair. Hard to miss in a small store like that. ;)

ocean diver 03-01-2009 03:57 AM

No I don't think so, would have remembered white pants.

ocean diver 03-01-2009 04:43 AM

Ok any help with clams??

lobsterboy 03-01-2009 06:44 AM

hey Mark,

congrads on the clam. you gotta get me a pic

From my previous experince, i would, place a small flat rock under the clam, so he can attach to it. the rock can be placed anywhere, and can be hidden in most DSB. the rock will help protect the clam, from nasty worms, etc, that might try to eat it while sitting in the sandbed, from the bottom up, without you noticing it.

also maybe some spot of wrasse, maybe a sixline( because its my fav) to protect from parasadic snails.

Myka 03-01-2009 04:59 PM

I have heard that placing a clam inside one half of an old clam shell works even better than a rock.

I placed my clam yesterday evening and today it looks good and has just turn a little bit. So things are all good right now!!!!!!!

Myka 03-01-2009 11:02 PM

Looks nice!! They had to have had a dozen or so there, eh? Nice quality too.

ocean diver 03-01-2009 11:11 PM

Yes Bayside Corals had about 10 or so very nice clams and at a fair price

MMAX 03-02-2009 02:44 PM

What did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking?

Zoaelite 03-02-2009 03:03 PM

Good Buy

Clams are addicting, one turns to two turns to three . Just need some good light, and to make sure your levels stay constant ( I run ALK at about 7.5 and my CA at 370 PPM) and all 3 of my clams seem to love it. If you can get into making some phyto then your whole tank, expecially the clams will love it.

How do I get my clam to stay up on the rock work??? It has fallen twice now on its own doing, not by a fish or snail.

this is the part of owing a clam, that drove me nuts. :twised:

ocean diver 03-04-2009 05:35 AM

Any thoughts??

a4twenty 03-04-2009 01:10 PM

clams will try to move around to find desirable conditions, there may be something he doesn't like in the spot you have chosen. as recommended by others, half bury a small flat rock ( or similar ) down in the sand and place the clam on top, he will attach in time if he's happy. then you can move the clam and his rock around in the tank.

what type of lighting and how much flow do you have??

ocean diver 03-05-2009 01:53 AM

I think I found the spot where it likes, it looks good and hasn't moved. So how long does it take for it to grab hold with its foot?

rocketlily 03-05-2009 11:29 AM

Mine attached within 24 hours.

zazzoo 03-05-2009 05:02 PM

took mine about 48 hours to completely attached... but during the 48 hours it was drivng me NUTS :twised:
