Bat fish

Hey guys....

I just got a bat fish from the lfs... he isn't eating very good right now and I was wondering if anyone knew what temp I should have the tank at???? I have him in with my 3 seahorses.... They are doing very well... Will try to get a pic posted soon..

uh, how big of a tank do you have. You do realize batfish get huge right....

dsaundry 02-26-2009 04:53 AM

From what I have read you may have your work cut out for you. They are apparently very difficult to keep..Soaking food in garlic may help...good luck

finny 02-26-2009 04:56 AM

I have him in a 35g at the moment but plan on moving them to my 95 once i get the new bigger tank for those ones... the lfs gave me some baby brine to put in and i have added some garlic.... just did a water change so will see what the next few days are like...

I've maintained a tank that has a batfish...now that he's eating it's a great fish (I've named him Franklin) top to bottom he's about 13 inches. Not a word of a lie. He's in a 450 gallon tank built into a bar in a pool room

Rbacchiega 02-26-2009 04:57 AM

a 95 is waaaaaaaaay to small. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but you will not be able to keep this fish unless you can get a HUGE tank...trust me. Take it back and get a credit

finny 02-26-2009 04:59 AM

Will keep that in mind thanks....

Rbacchiega 02-26-2009 06:03 AM

this one isn't mine. It belongs to a family in Calgary who travel alot. When they do, I go to their house and make sure everything is in order. Just maintenance

I think the issue is that he may eat them and will definately outcompete them for food once he starts eating. Seahorses are best kept in a species-only tank because they need a lot of special care. As someone else here has mentioned it's suprising that they haven't been "Darwinated" out yet lol... (Some people keep them with other peaceful fish, and even the odd not-so-peaceful fish and sometimes it works but sometimes it doesn't)

It's a pity because batfish are beautiful, I wish they stayed smaller.

finny 02-27-2009 04:02 AM

The lfs said they were fine together... guess i will see how things go.. i have had good luck with putting fish together that weren't supposed to get along...lol.. found out they weren't supposed to get along til i already had them together.. and they are fine.. i will keep my fingers crossed...thanks

Another round of great advice from a fish store. Batfish are another fish that shouldnt be imported. Way too big to put into any aquarium IMHO. Best of luck with him.

I agree.

Always have to careful of the impulse buy.

Not saying LFS employees are untruthful, but some may not be all that knowledgeable at times so need to check for yourself. Most if not all LFS will have some sort of reference book they'll let you look and if they don't wait until you're home and check your own references or something on-line (here's one).

I think the guy I was talking to was the owner... I guess I thought he was honest because when i was just in Vegas.. I was in Ceasers and they have a large tank with seahorses, bat fish, a cow fish and another type of butterfly... I think... And they were all good...

I have a Pinnatus Batfish.... Will the info be the same??? Thanks BTW

midgetwaiter 03-03-2009 03:29 AM

Pinnatus Batfish are almost impossible to establish in aquariums. They don't ship well and are often difficult to feed. Try google, you'll find tons of info that supports this.

I'm sorry to say it but the chances of this ending well are pretty much nil. Take him back if you can.

finny 03-03-2009 03:32 AM

He is eating... not lots but he is...I will google him.. Thanks

naesco 03-03-2009 05:04 AM

I agree. Please take him back now.
The LFS will understand as they should never have imported this fish.

Should have done that before buying him.. so you didn't have to make 2 trips to the LFS... 1 to buy and 1 to return.

my2rotties 03-03-2009 04:23 PM

Well she has him now... I know where he is from and feel bad that she is in this situation. She is here asking so she wants and needs the help. Perhaps she will have beginners luck and will get her fish through this.

I have made purchases where I asked many questions and had issues due to misinformation on part of the store. Now I know better, but I learned some hard lessons as well. You would think a store owner would care about his clients and future business... but it does not always work in our favor.

We all start some where.
