Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in!
I thought Dex would be the smallest dog I would ever own. He's about 45lbs. But, tomorrow I'm picking up a 2yr old Mini Daschund from a friend who can't look after him anymore (baby on the way!)
Anyone have experience with these dogs? Do tell! |
|
awww I wanna him! I had a weinie once, Lars. He was the best dog I have ever had. He was my best buddy!!! They are prone to back problems when they get old, cause their back is so long.. poor dogs in the snow, they leave 4 paw prints and a ditch where their ummm  drags
|
hahaha yeah, I can't wait. I'm pretty sure Dex will just walk over him. I've done some serious crash-course reading on the breed and am well aware of the back issues and the obesity issues as well. Dex is on a set feeding schedule so that shouldn't be a problem. Picking him up tomorrow....
|
I don't have one but some family have a girl, Winnie. She's a hilarious little girl. Pretty clever too (for a dog anyhow :p )
|
My family has had many over the years.
Be careful when picking them up or letting them jump up on things. They ruin their backs. Careful too with them roughhousing with your other dog (s). Again, they can get back problems. I mean they are no THAT delicate but I guess since their spine is so long, you do have to keep their backs in mind. Hes very cute :) |

I have one,
and it is a ravenous beast from hell. She will turn on me in a blink of any eye. She's not as bad with me as she is with my girlfriend. She attacks my girlfriend daily when she gets to close to me, or hugs me. to sum it up, she is extremely possesive....and crazy. and smells awful. But i love her? |
Welcome Oscar! Who gives up a dog for a baby? I say keep the dog find a home for the
baby. |
Great dogs but they have their ways for sure. We have had at least one for the last 25 yrs. "Weenie", {ya, that was his name}, was 17 when he passed in my wifes arms. There is a thread on him someplace here and on our new guy.
Very possessive as mentioned. And remember they were once bred to hunt badgers, so they can be aggressive. One of ours had minor back problems but we have been lucky with that so far. I have no idea how you keep them from jumping, etc. They are a flying bundle of energy. Also as mentioned, watch their weight close. Thats a major cause of the back problems. And like most dogs, they will eat until they explode. {Funny my female dobie never did that, I think its a male thing,}. They love to crawl under the covers to sleep. Get cold very easy. :D |
I had a Daschund growing up for 16 years (our 1st dog), he was an awesome dog as well I had another one that I rescued from someone for a while and re-homed him. The one thing about them is they are very stubborn (as with most hounds) they are a lot smarter than they let on as well. Alot of them seem to have "selective hearing" they know what you want them to do but just don't seem to care, they are very food motivated but watch with the treats as the last thing you want is for them to get fat, back problems are a big problem if you don't watch their weight (due to their length)
My brother (Spanky on here) has two mini's at the moment so I'm sure he'll chime in here eventually with some pictures too. My brothers two daschys are totally different in personality, you couldn't get two more different dogs that are the same breed. Some Quirky things that I found almost all of them like. - love to be as hot as possible, under blankets in bed, laying in clothes out of the dryer, laying on/beside heat registers. - for some reason a lot of them like when you lay on the floor on your back and blow on their neck (wierd I know, but I've seen at least 6 that love this) - love to jump off of things, even though they shouldn't be allowed to due so. - The one I rescued could play ball 24/7, and when you stopped playing with him he would bury the ball in a planket himself and try to find it. They can be really wonderful dogs, a pretty big package in a tiny body, lots of personality. Sounds like you have a German Shepherd barking behind the door only to find this little rat once you get in. One thing to keep in mind is that they are hunters (rodents, badgers) etc. so if you have pet hamsters or birds or anything, keep them away, instinct always prevails (I speak from experience) All in all I think you will have fun with the little one, hounds are definatly different in their own right, but they can be wonderful pets. Feel free to ask if you have anymore questions, I'm sure Lance (spanky) will post some pic's of his guys when he gets a chance. Elliot |

You should have knit him a little "weenie warmer"; cuz that would be hilarious watching you put it on him every time he went outside. Oh, and by the way, Oscar is very cute. |
thanks guys/gals for the the responses. Jacqueline (my friend) should be here within the hour...STOKED!
It seems as though I'll have two stubborn dogs on my hands when Oscar comes. I guess a pluss out of getting a dog who's two is that he's already house broken, knows basic commands (whether or not he listens to them will be interesting) and for the last month has been living with 2 german shepards (who have now gone to live with Jaquelines Mom and Dad, who owned them first....kind of confusing) |
Apparently he'll come with a few sweaters....I swore I would never dress any dog I ever owned, but I bought Dexter a Flames Jersey (a reall doggie Jersey! It's got all the patches etc of a jersey that we would buy for ourselves)....I don't even have a Flames Jersey. Something is wrong with that picture...

I used to train dogs. these guys very tenacious, stubborn and smart. They will test you if you are a weak pack leader and take advantage of you as well. With the right owner and I know you are fantastic, they are fabulous dogs. They do tend to bark a lot and will bite heels if the owner allows that behavior.
You are going to have so much fun. Bring your pups to Bragg for some hiking I can take you on trails that only the locals know about. Of course when the snow melts or we will never find the little guy... My Stafford has to tunnel out of the snow all the time. |

Thanks for the heads up Diana, I might just take you up on the offer to go hiking in the spring/summer. |
That would be awesome I still want to hire ytou to do the artwork and ink for my tribute tattoo for Diva... it is a very important piece of work for this next one. It is time to get it done. The tank was the winter thing and I won't be spending all my money on it, just enough to run it now.

Well, the boys just had their first meeting...what a gong show! Lots of sniffing, circling and playing already. Dexter is still a little hyper for Oscar's liking, so right now Oscar is sitting on the couch beside me. I'm going to let them get a little more used to them before I try and grab pictures...
|
I forgot to ask you about when you are going to buy those trendy doggie over the shoulder hand bags and strollers for your little guy? Little puppy might get too tired and you will have to carry him:mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:
Sorry but you so don't look like one of those people, but loving a dog makes you do silly things:wink: |
well they now have matching jerseys.... Oscar also has an argyle sweater (omg) and booties for when we go for walks in the snow.
And because I didn't want Dex left out I bought him a polo shirt...the collar even pops. I can't believe I just did that. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND I just realized I have two German dogs (Dexter and Oscar are very German names LOL) so for halloween I'm dressing them up as WW2 soldiers. |
You dress your dogs up? AWESOME!!!
Rotties have n sense of humor when it comes to clothing f any kind. My Stafford Fergus has a few sweaters, one being argyle as well. I think he is aware that he may look gay and will run into the under brush until the sweater either comes off or is destroyed. I need to get him a nut warmer for the deep Bragg Creek snow, he suffers huge amounts of shrinkage when he is out. Quote:

that's possibly the funniest thing I have ever read. Just go get an old lady to knit a coin purse (BAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA)
I don't make it a habit to dress my dogs (their both naked now) But I let Dex out for a long time and Oscar gets cold...so I put on his boots if he's going out for more than a pee (which seems to be every 10 minutes) But they will be dressed up for when guests come over for dinner. |

OMG are they cute. Ernie looks just like our Kingsley.
|
Wow they sure do look alike. HAHA Kingsley's outfit is great.
|
HAve friends that have one of these.Neet dog but wow what a pig. They had to velcro shut the fridge cause he figured out how to open it and would help himself to everything. They came home one day and he had eaten an entire Ham. He was laying on the floor feet straight up un the air groaning..they thought he ws a goner.
|
We had to do the same thing with our last dacshund he opened the fridge and ate a pound of raw chicken breast and then opened the pantry and ate 11 kaiser buns. We had velcro on the fridge and baby locks on all the cupboards haha.

I told him if he went out in public looking like that all the dogs in the neighborhood would laugh at him. Only way you can get him for a walk without freezing up though. As we mentioned, this is how possessive they can be. One of our suitcases when we went away for Christmas. Not going without me. |
