Evolution...Hobby Wise
I was recently going through my collection of pictures(1000+) of my saltwater tanks and thought it might be cool to see other peoples evolution in the hobby.
I'll start.I personally started with a sumpless 20g. http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...e/IMGP0473.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...e/IMGP0908.jpg Then moved into a sumpless 68g. http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...e/IMGP1249.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...e/IMGP1335.jpg Then upgraded to my current tank, a 110g display/55g sump. http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...e/IMGP1740.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...me/FTS2Oct.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...e/IMGP2539.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...time/TOTM1.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...e/IMGP3007.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...e/IMG_0398.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...IMG_0033-2.jpg |

Just curious, how long did the evolution take??

Neato! I'll play. No digital before 2002. Started in 2001 with a 20gal.
2002 (48 gal) http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...gy/Apr2002.jpg 2003 (before tank upgrade to 90gal later that year) http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3.../Apr232003.jpg 2004 Battle of the Dinoflagellates (tank waffled between the following two photos) http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3.../may292004.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...y/oct42004.jpg 2005 http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...sept5_2005.jpg 2006 http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...y/DSCN5294.jpg 2007 http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...ology/tank.jpg 2008 http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...april82008.jpg 2009 http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...ogy/tank-1.jpg |

This is embarrassing.
Early 2006 I built a peninsula upstairs. Late 2006 I began building a 400 gallon downstairs and moved the ~70 gallon (which never looked that great to begin with) down as well so I could reno the main floor. I haven't had anything living in a tank since late 2006. The 400 was cut apart and sold (I filled it once to leak test) and the wall torn down to sell the house. Check out that sweet ro/di feed to my sump! http://www.fishbrains.net/images/build/evolving.jpg http://www.fishbrains.net/images/build/rescaped2.jpg |

The pic with the algae was dinoflagellates and caulerpa. For most of that year I battled the war with these two algaes. The dinoflagellates would smother everything, I would siphon, lights out, high pH whatever I could think of. I'd finally get rid of them, then the caulerpa would proliferate and I'd go in and prune it. They'd release some sort of substance (I was told it was caulerpines) and the dinos just loved it and they would go to town once again. In the midst of this I lost every coral I had except for the pink pavona and yellow porites which I still have, as the algaes would just smother them out. It was a horrible year and I didn't get rid of the dinoflagellates until I restarted the tank with no sand. |
August 2008
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1.../marine002.jpg Today Feb. 21, 09 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...nkfeb09002.jpg My photo skills not very good, and the tank is a work in progress being slowed by the lack of a job currently. |

Looking back it was a bad idea to mix that many tangs in a 90g. |

My evolution is ALL over the map.
May 2008: 54G sumpless... this tank never saw anymore life than a few hermit crabs. Not 1 snail, not 1 coral, not 1 fish. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Tank/Reef7.jpg June 2008: The 54G soon became the sump of my 1st attempt at a my 75G. Tore this 75 apart about 2 months later. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...fullsystem.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...enterpiece.jpg Mid 2008: I had my 20G going while the 1st attempt on the 75 was tore down. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ano/FTSNov.jpg Sept-Oct 2008: The rebuild of my 75G took place. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...k/75plumb6.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../aquascape.jpg November 2008: During the time while the 75G was cycling, I started a 10G for the Contest. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...t/DecFTS10.jpg February 2009: Current 75G http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...d/FTSFeb09.jpg Damn!!!!! It hasn't even been a year yet! |
The new tank is SEXY! Well done. I'm a sucker for a nice trimless tank with careful attention to detail like that.

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h316/das75/75Gal.jpg 145G 2006 http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...dium/tank1.JPG 145g spring/summer 2009 http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h316/das75/NewT5.jpg 145g now. After the die off about back to where I started http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h3...5/PB150061.jpg |
Your install is beautiful Mark. A real shame about the bad run of luck but obviously you're capable and will have it looking as good again. Your stand with the 3 pockets underneath...exactly what I had planned to to only I was going to have two pockets and use the same tile I did but in the pockets as well. If I were you I'd buy a few sch 80 elbows and swap out those returns as they stick out quite a bit.
Hmmm...they did. I see they're fairly encrusted now =) |
I like how your blue tang can change colors in 2005 he's blue then 2006 he's purple and 2007 he's blue again. I want one for my self.

Jan 07 a newbie takes a plunge. Very Getto but what an awesome skimmer.
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...rboy/jano7.jpg Oct 07. built a new stand and reno'd the family room. Still pretty getto LOL http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...rboy/oct07.jpg Jan 08 New lights etc and starting to come together.http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...rboy/jan08.jpg Jan 08 Switching over to SPS and its growing like mad. Tank is well settled in. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...rboy/jan09.jpg Tank crashed in Aug of 09 and was sold off and replaced with 120 G that is currently cycling. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/a...y/P1020499.jpg |
OMG man that sports picture of the tiny team and giant coach. First pic you posted...hanging on the wall. I nearly busted a gasket when I saw that!
Progression was good...shame about the crash. We get better with every tank though so something to look forward to with the 120. |
My first SW. I purchased it from an ad in the local Buy and Sell exactly as it is pictured.
20gal 2004 http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...ture001sml.jpg I then went to a 48gal and then to a 33gal during 2004 but those pictures are lost forever thanks to a windows virus. 50gal 2005 http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...o/FILE0956.jpg 50gal later 2005 http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...o/FILE0941.jpg 120gal 2006 http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...o/FILE1199.jpg 120gal 2007 http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...ly92007005.jpg 120gal 2008 http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...Picture015.jpg 120gal 2009 http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...Picture028.jpg The big tomato clown is the only original part of my first tank. |
Started with a 72G bow in Oct 04. Here's a picture in Oct 06
http://excalibur.bc.ca/aquarium/72%2...t_Oct_2006.jpg Moved to 180G in Jan 07 http://excalibur.bc.ca/aquarium/slid...gal%20tank.jpg Feb 07 http://excalibur.bc.ca/aquarium/Tank...%2002%2011.jpg Aug 07 http://excalibur.bc.ca/aquarium/Tank...%2008%2017.jpg June 08 http://excalibur.bc.ca/aquarium/Tank...%2001%2024.jpg Nov 08 http://excalibur.bc.ca/aquarium/Tank...%2011%2030.jpg I wish I had taken a picture before a broken outer case on the halide bulb broke, nuking 1/3 of my tank. Here it is now with the corals re-arranged to fill in the space. http://excalibur.bc.ca/aquarium/Tank...%2011%2016.jpg |
Some really impressive progress guys....keep em coming...
|
VERY nice Reefer Rob!
|
|
Night and day Mike I love it. My memory is hazy...is that Doug's old Frogspawn? You've got a couple sizable colonies in there!
|
Here is my "evolution", more like progress of falling deeper and deeper into the addiction!

It took me 2 & 1/2 hours to find all my pic.'s and the dates!!!!!
It all Started back in Jan. 2006 with a 60g tank.
This pic. was from March 2006 when the tank had pretty much just finished cycling. 60g Sept. 2006 60g Feb. 2007 We also added a 10g biocube in Jan. 2007 (which we used cured live rock to set it up with) and in Feb. 2007 this pic. was taken |
I love that you have Canreef on your computer beside the biocube!
|
April 2007 we added a mantis and damsels 10g bowfront tank (which I can't find or didn't take a full tank shot of) and also at this time I sold the biocube and transferred the clowns into a 15g long tank, but again for some reason I can't find a pic. of it.
Mantis (which to this day still lives in my sump and eats mysis, krill and silversides, that I feed to it with prongs, and is still about 2-3 inches) Devil damsels (used to dive bomb and terrorize my mantis until I gave them away) Dec. 2007 120g (which was set up May 2007 but no other pics) Dec. 2007 30g cube tank (which was set up in the summer of 2007 but no other pics) |
