Meet Kona

Meet our newest family member, Kona the chocolate/rust Miniature Pinscher. We rescued her last night from a situation where she was not being properly cared for, has terrible scarring on her back and chest, stank of pee and is very skinny. She is a little timid but I am very impressed at how well she is doing! We have 2 other min pins for her to frolick with and hopefully they will teach her how to act tough! She is about 4.5 months old...

Very cute!! Glad you found another rescue pup. Being a puppy she should be able to overcome her timidness I would think. She doesn't look very skinny in the photos...she looks quite a good weight! Maybe the photos are deceiving.

Whatigot 02-19-2009 09:59 PM

dude.
I have been trying to rescue a mini pin or chihuahua or a minipinxchi but have been getting the runaround from so many rescue agencies.

sweet looking dog, bet its got a tonne of personality.

if there are any more in the situation you've described, let me know,
Bodai and I would LOVE the company.

Thanks! She is not deathly skinny, but her backbone, pelvis, and ribs are visible beneath the coat :(. I think she was getting sporadic feeding... but with a raw food diet she will beef right up :D

Whatigot, I will contact you if I hear of any others in the area. We do get emails from min pin rescues in the states, and were considering one until we saw Kona. We actually found her in the buysell, not through a rescue.... I have heard of the odd min pin turning up at the spca. :)

Cheers

What a nice thing to do, I have a feeling she will have an amazing new home. Hopefully
it will make up for her short, bumpy, life. Will look forward to more pictures.

Ah, well I've always kept big dogs, and keeping them on the thin side is the key to a longer life, and better health for their joints, so her weight looks really GOOD to me!! Raw food is the way to go, which "method" do you use?

Diana 02-19-2009 11:12 PM

Yeah I pride myself on keeping my dogs a perfect weight... especially with min pins since they certianly are eaters (every one I meet at the dog park is FAT!) hehe. But a puppy should be a little porky, she is a growing little girl! :D

I get them all sorts of raw meats, beef, chicken, lamb, duck, buffalo, venison, elk, etc etc! Most of it is pre-ground with a good percentage of bone and organ meats. I will pulp my own veggies to add in, but sometimes I will buy pre-made raw meat mixed with veggies right in. They get the occational par-boiled egg. There is a great pet store here in North Van that specializes in raw diet, its like a kid in a candy store! (errr for the dogs, not me!) ;). I also made this great recipe for putting weight on skinny dogs, its called "Satin Balls" if you google it. I just omitted the grains from it. :)

Yes, me too (on priding myself on a dog's good weight). I think people should be charged with animal abuse for keeping dogs (and cats and horses, etc) excessively obese. It's disgusting.

The nice part about owning small dogs is that raw feeding is much more affordable. Having a large dog means that ground meats won't suffice, as big dogs need the chunks of meat in order to get enough chewing power to properly activate salivary glands, which means a much higher cost per pound. When I moved to Kelowna, I couldn't find a decent source for affordable raw meats, and I was spending about $6-12 per day for my dog's food. I bit the bullet and switched her onto ultra grade kibble, which was very disheartening, but there does not appear to be any difference in her health or coat.

As much as I will preach "no grains" to anyone who will listen, my dog needs a very small amount of grains in order to keep weight on. Otherwise she eats an abnormally large amount. It is quite weird how a small amount of rice will beef her right up, and I mean muscle, not fat. She is also more active when she has those grains. However, too much grains and holy moly stinky farts!!! *barf*

Such a cute dog, I'm glad you are able to give her a good home.

EmilyB 02-20-2009 04:45 AM

Congrats Diana, I know you have wanted one for a while.

michika 02-20-2009 02:09 PM

Awe, what a cutie! I hope she settles in well!

Diana 02-20-2009 05:08 PM

Thanks! She is doing so very well. Has never really been outside so getting her to "do her business" outside is a real challenge, but we are at about 50% success rate :P. Past that its regular puppy antics, teething and being underfoot. I think she will be a great dog. I will try and get a pic of all of them together. :)

hahaha, good luck.

you guys are raw fooders huh?
I admit, raw's the best for an animal (as nature intended), but I don't think that a good quality kibble is detrimental to your dog.
This can be a pretty hot button issue for some though, so good luck with your new pal no matter how you decide to fatten it up.

michika 02-20-2009 06:16 PM

Also raw isn't always a viable option unfortunately. Not to mention good kibble is hard to find...Anways as not to highjack any further, I'll start a new thread in the lounge so we can keep discussing it.

I second the request for more photos, group shots, or singles, I'm good either way. I love min-pins. I wanted one, but got a fantastic dog instead from the humane society. Rescue stories always make me happy.

Diana 03-18-2009 03:45 AM

Alright well I said I would get a pic of them together... it took about 3 weeks, but here it is. :D Kona is settling in very nicely and she now has naturally standing ears, which is a unique and sought-after trait in min pins so people don't have to clip their ears (which I never liked, but then again they do have docked tails). Alas...

Lol, min pins are not miniature dobermans, they are terriers....

Please post your dobes !

Key Equine 03-18-2009 01:26 PM

Yes, I am aware of that, although re-reading my post I can see how it would be confusing... They do look like little mini dobes though! So cute.

Leah 03-18-2009 01:32 PM

That is not very lady like! She looks very comfortable though. She is really pretty!

Diana 03-18-2009 04:22 PM

Thanks everyone! Yes she is turning into a real pretty little dog. Slowly she is loosing her wrinkly "puppy face". So we must enjoy it while it lasts. :D

Even though dobies and min pins are not "related" in the breed sense they are similar enough in shape to make it hard to love one and not the other! We originally wanted a doberman, but house and yard size dictated we get a smaller dog. But once we saw the min pins & "experienced" their temperment we knew that was the breed for us. I think I have to stop at 3 though. ;)

fishoholic 03-18-2009 07:29 PM

Beautiful dogs, I love your pic.'s.

EmilyB 03-18-2009 07:37 PM

We're going to be meeting another rescue dobe soon, I am so excited!
