Looking for lights for a 10 gal nano.
Does anyone out there have any lights/fixtures that would fit a 10 gal tank (20x10) that they're wanting to get rid of? I'm looking to use between 36 and 55 watts for the tank.
Thanks, Noel |
why don't you just use 4 regular NO's, and make a canopy. It is actually pretty easy, and if you are only housing soft corals, there should be no problem. Thats what I have on one of my nano's and it is doing fine

I can't find 18"-20" NOs. Do you know where I could find some?
Thanks, Noel |

http://www.bigalsonline.com/cgi-bin/...ting&inSub=232 I guess the Hagen MarineGlo and PowerGlo are for marine applications. There are others as well such as Reef Sun and Coralife. Just hit the Next button on that link to see their entire selection. But I would say go for 2x32W Powercompact retrofit kits if you can afford it. They will cost about $80 each though. |
If you don't want to DIY, you can get complete Powercompact fluorescent hoods from Coralife.
Here is their 20" 28W Aqualight http://www.esuweb.com/new_site/ccc_53000 Here is their 20" 96W Aqualight http://www.esuweb.com/new_site/ccc_53101 I got my 36" hood from King Ed. You could probably check with J&L or Aquafanatics to see if they could bring one in for you as well. |
what was the cost on the coralife units?
|
It was around $169 for the 96W 36" Canopy. I didn't see if they stocked the 20" ones. The aluminum housing is a neat feature. No worries about canopy fires there.

Yeah, I had looked at those Coralife fixtures, but nobody sells them around here.

I saw them at king eds not that long ago. I don't know if they will have the size you want though. There is only one way to find out

OK if I decide to go for a DIY hood I'll need some help with this, as I don't have a lot of experience in electrical wiring.
My plan is to have a 10 gal tank divided into 3 areas... the main display, a refugium and a space for the return pump/heater. My lighting plan is pictured below. Basically, I'd like enough light to have some corals, along with the ability to have the actinics and whites on different time settings and the refugium lighting to be on an opposite time setting. The tank is 20x10 and the lights are all power compact 13 watt (actinic and 10,000K over the tank, 6500K over the refugium) which are 7" long. Does this sound OK and does it require 3 ballasts? Thanks, Noel http://members.shaw.ca/mcgrans/tank_light.jpg |
that sounds like too much work going on in that small area. why don't you just use the tank as your main display and use an aquaclear 5000 as the refugium.

On my 10G nano I have a standard Incandescent canopy/fixture combo; around $25. I added 2 screw-in, self ballasted 20W PC bulbs; about $20 each. You can get bulbs that will fit anywhere from 9W to 28W and Coralife has a 50/50 bulb that will fit also. This is a cheap solution, you may still have the canopy if your tank was originally a kit. Many LFS in your area (Kevin's, Paul's) carry these parts.
Pros: Cheap. No extra ballasts or cords. Cheap. Super easy to put together, no DIY canopy etc. Cheap. Did I say cheap? Cons: No seperate light timing. No "placing" light over certain parts of the tank (but face it, it's only 20" by 10") |

Why is lighting so much more expensive here, as opposed to the US?

I think I'm ready to re-sell mine. Any takers for $169?   |

It's the single 96W canopy that I got, not the Dual 96 W canopy. |

The 20' Coralife fixture is @ Animal House. Give Jason A call at the Abbotsford location I'm not sure of the price.
I just set up a 10G and ordered lights from the US. I went with JBJ they have great stuff for small tanks BTW some of the high Watt stuff from the US is not CSA approved. So if your nabours house catches yours on fire your insurance company will somehow blame it on the lights and not pay out. just an FYI Jason |
Has anyone seen/bought the new 20" CSL PC/Moon-Lite fixture? 40w 10K and 40w Actinic with an LED Moon light. Only $115US... seems like a good deal.
