Why is there a spider in my tank?

Well it might not be a spider but all I have seen of it are its legs and it looks exactly like a spider. It even moves like one. Judging by the size of its legs it is probably 3" across its leg span. I am going to try to get a pic now. Are there marine spiders? Either way it's creepy looking.

Oh I finally saw what I think is a bristle worm. It is about 10" long. It was just out roaming around. By the time I fumbled my camera out it was gone

No its legs arn't as skinny. I just got a half decent look at it . It is definitly a crab of some sort. I'm going to try to figure out how to post some pics. Give me an hour or so:lol:

O.K. how do I post pics on here?

Aquattro 02-01-2009 04:04 AM

Since you have a photobucket account, you can probably link to them with IMG code

Aquattro 02-01-2009 04:06 AM

Also, I was sure there was a sticky written by someone, turns out it was me :)

However, my screenshots are missing, because my server died. See if the text helps out, but photobucket is probably your best choice...

new but handy 02-01-2009 04:33 AM

Hey I put pics on my photobucket account. they are the first 2 pics. sorry about the completly un id-able pics but that is all I have seen of it.... untill tomorrow when it is coming out for inspection

Chowder 02-01-2009 04:39 AM

Looks like a hairy legged crab. Are considered to be not reef safe. If you can catch it I would and put it in your sump,

Chris

new but handy 02-01-2009 04:52 AM

yes the legs are hairy thats what makes it look like a spider. I just re-read my posts and relized I didn't put that nugget of useful info in there. sorry. The crab will go into the sump asap thank you
I will get a pic of it when i preform the operation in the morning

new but handy 02-01-2009 04:53 AM

mark 02-01-2009 04:58 PM

Or just cut and paste the whole line from the img code from photobucket

that thing looks mean. deffinate sump bound, or mantis food???

justinl 02-01-2009 05:39 PM

hairy, red eyes, black sharp tipped claws. that is the definition of a bad crab. to the sump he goes... unless you know someone with an octopus or a mantis shrimp :)

Rbacchiega 02-01-2009 05:46 PM

well that's not a nice looking little bugger.

But fwiw, there are such things as "marine spiders"...they're disgusting.

hey pycnogonids are awesome! they just *suck* when they're sucking the juices out of your corals in a mosquito like fashion...

new but handy 02-01-2009 06:02 PM

I sort of figured there were marine spiders! I was 99.9% sure it was a crab but when all I ever saw of it was 4 hairy legs curling in and out of a hole in a rock. You never know.
There might be a guy coming over today with some coralline scrapings for me he has a mantis problem. I will probably give it to him. Unless you can catch it Rob, I would set up a 10g for it!
For my next seek and capture mission, the 10" bristle worm that I finally saw in full last night.

justinl 02-01-2009 06:15 PM

hunting bristleworms is a lot more trouble than it's worth. unless you actually see it eating coral, it's harmless. the coral eaters are very rare.
