Hose Clamps + Salt Water
Is it safe to use hose clamps on submerged equipment. Is there something bad that can leach from them or do they rust. What is an alternative?

I use plastic ones, got them at Rona, they tend to be cheaper at non-pet stores.
|
Princess Auto sells them by the bag. IIRC there are about 20 of various sizes for a couple of bucks. Neon colors is the only problem with them.
|
Not for the aquarium but I've used zip-ties with hose on barb fittings. Wasn't coming apart.
|
Umm ya, forgot about zip ties they also work well.
|
hose clamps rust i only use zip ties
+1 mark:mrgreen: |
metal hose clamps also seem to be oiled which wouldn't be good in your tank. Never knew there were plastic ones though...i'll have to remember that.
|
you can buy Stainless Steel hose clamps as well, i just cant remember where to get them, i think greenlee but could be wrong.
|
Those stainless steel clamps usually have non-stainless screws for some reason. I bought a bunch thinking I was smart untill all the screws started to rust.
|
oops i forgot to mention you have to ask for the ones with SS screws.. i have made that mistake before as well.
The reason they use the carbon steel screws is SS screws dont last very long and they strip easily. |

Stainless
Stainless is called 'stain LESS' because it stains(rusts) less than regular steel. Stainless will still rust, especially the grade used on hose clamps. I second the motion for zip ties or plastic hose clamps.

underwater I only use zip ties and they hold tight . Dont use the metal hose clamps at all .
EDIT:I third |
