How far would you go for frags..
Literally. I see threads where people say that frags are too far, like an hour across town.
Personally, I've driven 30 minutes to the ferry, paid some stupid ferry fee, to go to the mainland 90 minutes away, only to then drive to Chilliwack, another 2 hours. Then into Abbotsford, Burnaby, New West, Ladner, then back to the island. so how far have you gone for frags? I think some people have flown from Nanaimo to Calgary before, albeit under th guise of "visiting" . Let's hear the travel stories!! :) |
Heh, I've flown to both Calgary and Edmonton for reef meetings/frags. I remember flying back from Calgary with a bangaii cardinalfish named Bug from EmilyB. Going through security I was nervous that they'd rat me out for taking water on the plane. Two security guards were yacking about their friday nights and the other just wanted to see the little guy, she sai he was "cute" before she waved me through. Its really too bad they have that no liquids on the plane rule (although I have a feeling they probably had one before for large amounts of saltwater but I just never got caught ).
I've driven to both Calgary and Edmonton as well, under the guise of visiting family. I have all the fish stores googlemapped from their houses. I've driven to Red Deer for a tank (which I don't think my husband will EVER let go ) that has been and will live in storage for the next 6 months but it was too good a deal to pass up (ok even I will admit that was one of my crazier moves). I've done the ferry and out to well, the whole of the lower mainland I think, for frags/fish. I have a softsided cooler that I have overfilled several times and almost given myself a hernia hauling back on the ferry (I always forget how much water weighs when you have 25 small bags of it with frags in them). I remember the drive to Mission for a tailspot wrasse. It felt like I was just driving and driving and driving and I remember thinking "who would want to live way the hell out here?". It seemed like a long drive at the time but thats mostly because I had no idea where I was going (I've been back since, and its not *that* far). The drive back seemed much quicker. I did say "man the things I do for this hobby" several times during the drive though (although I've said that often over the years ). I've taken the float plane back from Vancouver and had a major leak in my "luggage" (those rolly carry on luggages are awesome for fish/coral transport, you can really stuff them full, and they're expandable!!). I couldn't get off the plane fast enough when I saw the telltale water stain on the outside. I left a trail all the way across the dock and up the ramp only to greet my husband with a "we've gotta get home quick, a bag broke!" instead of a kiss  I had to hose down the bag when I got home so it didn't rust. I think its transported more frags and fish than normal luggage items (like clothes!) I've also done a goodly portion of the island as well, Victoria, Cobble Hill, Campbell River, Port Alberni etc. I'm thinking about bugging Marie to have a little reef meeting now that theres lots of Powell River reefers. The road trip would be fun and I've never been to Powell River. I hear they have not one but TWO great thai restaurants  Good grief, reading this over you'd almost think I need an intervention or something eh? |
you mention ladner.. but not tsawwassen.. what kind of island person are you?? lol!
Driving 30min (across the city of edmonton is nothing) I used to live in the lower mainland and to get anywhere good is an hour! lol! |
well since the only thing i have is parents to drive the furthest ive gone is probably like,
an all day calgary round trip without buying anything:lol: |

The farthest I've gone is vancouver for corals but then again if your driving its a 10 hr return trip not counting the time it takes to LFS hop  |
I travell a good 1.5 hours to Red Coral whenever I go there!
|
I did the 2 hour ferry ride each way, AND sat thru a hockey game just so I could go to J&L's the next day.
|
I'm lazy, I think the furthest I would go would be 45 minutes to an hour tops, but for an hour it better be something great. I guess we are lucky in Calgary as most things are availbable withing a 45 minute drive.
|
My next big trip for frags is going to be down the street to see Marie  she has some real beauties that I need to :grab:
|
I guess I havn't gone too far, But I can remember getting a call at 5:00pm from Chowder wanting to head to Jamie Cross', thats about 3 hours round trip. and well worth it. He picked me up at 5:15

I brought a cooler full home from Red Coral in Calgary. (Thanks Kevin) Flew them home by West Jet to Comox and then on the ferry to Powell River.
PS. Christy, we would love to have you come visit us over here in PR. Walk on the ferry and I can pick you and others up and do the tour. |

Yeah, and Dave is a firefighter. He can resuscitate us after we drink too much. :drinking::drinking::drinking: |
sounds like I should be making a trip out to Powell River....

The closest 'LFS' to me, not including walmart, is in Saskatoon... about 5 hours away. Actually, scratch that there's one in Prince Albert, but they don't specialize in marine. I have bought fish and plants there when I did freshwater tanks.
So I guess I would drive 5 hours to Saskatoon for stuff. I could go to Winnipeg too, that's 8 hours. Not really a day trip or anything but the trip to the fish stores is always fun  |
Twice a year for the past two I've driven from PG to Burnaby for some coral, salt and sand (all the stuff the stores wont ship for free) barely stopping to talk to any relatives. Its usually about 18 hours of driving before all is said and done.

We don't have the luxury of LFS that carry coral of any kind other than leathers...so does a drive to the airport count?!! We bring our frags in from J&L, OA, OI...and pretty much anyone that will ship them!! Then we hang on to them for dear life!!

Yeah, but we don't have Sidney Crosby. |

The question depends on whether there is a friendly reef visit at the end. I've gone to Calgary & back...
|
Living in Sechelt, it's a 30 min drive to the ferry, a 40 min (and 50-something-dollar) ferry ride to horseshoe bay and then....however long it takes to go where we're going. Drew loooves driving me to all the LFS and as far as Ladner and Abby for frags (please note the heavy sarcasm) It's definatley an all day trip.
We usually go to "town" once or twice a month, and we do other things than visit fish stores....sometimes. ;) I think it's a pretty fair ways to go, but I enjoy it. |
So far I've been pretty spoiled I haven't had to go far for what I want. Mostly just accross the city about 30 min. or so. I have gone to Stony Plain before for a fish, but even then it's only about a 45 min.
I have wonderful friends who go to Calgary often so if I ever want anything from there, they will pick it up for me  |
