PVC Framing...

Alright, so I get the fact that you lay out what you want, drill the rocks and then zip tie em to the pvc. What are the holes in the PVC for? I know some of them would be used for the ties...but are the rest just for flow? Is there an extra pump needed? Or is it just for "normal" waterflow?

Could people please post pics of their PVC framework...I like the idea of it, but am having a bit of a hard time wrapping my head around it.

I dunno...pen holders?

No, you're probably right (flow and for the zip ties)

Rbacchiega 12-30-2008 08:32 PM

I get it...so if my fish feel the uncanny desire to draw their surroundings the pens will be handy...excellent LOL

So then no extra pump needed? It's just to allow water to pass through the entire structure?

Pescador 12-30-2008 08:59 PM

They are just to prevent stagnant water in the PVC.

Thanks Brian....like the dart frog setup btw... I used to keep strawberry darts a while back

I have some pics if you would like to see them. Of my pvc substructures I should add.

Indeed Doug. I've seen the finished product in your journal, but wouldn't mind seeing the steps involved...

You wouldn't want the air trapped, so then it floated would you?

+ 2 does anyone have a picture of there frame work ???

Pescador 01-01-2009 10:53 PM

My frame is more just a basic support to allow more flow under the back of the rock.

Brian is your rockwork setup like a wall sortof? Sloping back to front? I want archways and overhangs.... similar to alot of the 300+ gallon tanks we see here and on ReefCentral..but in a smaller, 50 gallon scale LOL

Pescador 01-02-2009 05:06 AM

Mine is based on two peaks with a canyon that runs to the back wall. Inspired by Palletta's book and the amazing Oregonreef.com. I have 36" front to back to help. Caves and overhangs were built using the pvc support. If you can get ahold of Vol. 3 of The Reef Aquarium there is a great chapter on backgrounds and aquascaping using alternative methods.

oregonreef.com for sure!
what type of bit is needed to drill the rocks?

Tangman 01-10-2009 09:52 PM
