OCT: EA PHOTO - Symbiotic Relationships
 

The winner will be determined by you, the voters, and the winner will receive a framed picture



Contest Rules are as follows:

1) You must follow the guidelines given for each contest

2) ALL members including vendors can enter, I just ask that the picture is from a personal or display tank, not store stock.

3) As long as YOU take the picture and it fits the guidelines you can enter it, I don’t care whose tank it’s from

4) First come, first serve up to 20. But do not hesitate to continue posting pictures if 20 were already posted.

5) Each can post as many pictures as they want, but only ONE can be entered. Please specify which one when posting multiple pictures or I will choose for you.

6) Have Fun!

I know you folks can do this one, lots of options. I was also corrected on my definition of symbiotic by my lovely girlfriend who needs to remember she's an engineer now not a biologist, you've been converted.
Anyways I guess they don't both have to benefit as there are three types of symbiotic relationships. I'll probably be corrected again but:
1) Both benefit
2) One benefits
3) Neither benefit
I would love to see examples of all these! Oh and if you disagree on the definition let me know cause I love feeding the fire :mrgreen:

Can you give an example of a symbiotic relationship where neither benefits? I'm not challenging your definition, I'm just really curious!

So the relationship between me and my wallet is what? #2? #3? Maybe we need a 2.5.

That's a good one, Catherine. For #3, I was thinking Britney Spears and K-Fed....but I don't think I'll be able to get a picture of them anytime soon.

Wait there's more!

Mutualism: both species benefit
Commensalism: one species benefits, the other is unaffected
Parasitism: one species benefits, the other is harmed
Competition: neither species benefits
Neutralism: both species are unaffected

Not sure if all those are right, but I guess there are many types, more than listed so have fun with this one.

I'll leave the examples up to you.

Are we forgetting clownfish and their 'nems?? :D Or pistol shrimp and their gobies? How about coral and zooxanthellae? Cleaner shrimp and fish? Do those count?

Isn't there a deepwater cucumber that has a shrimp or fish that lives up it's bum? THAT'S a funny one! (Tho I doubt it lives in the home aquarium :)

My blue tuxedo urchin--- the little one. My paly gets to take a tour of the tank while the urchin gets to use it as camouflage. I think that counts as symbiotic....Attachment 3315

Well i just realized that someone had already entered a picture of a clown goby in SPS. So I though I would add this one ! Don't care what picture you use:biggrin: The relationship is kinda one way because the red star is getting shade under the frogspawn but still kinda a relationship.:lol: I am using a cannon G7(I don't know how to use it)

I think we are stretching the term "symbiotic" a little far here!

I'm not a huge fan of wiki but here it is:

"The term symbiosis (from the Greek: σύν syn "with"; and βίωσις biosis "living") commonly describes close and often long-term interactions between different biological species. The term was first used in 1879 by the German mycologist, Heinrich Anton de Bary, who defined it as: "the living together of unlike organisms".[2][3]

The definition of symbiosis is in flux and the term has been applied to a wide range of biological interactions. The symbiotic relationship may be categorized as being mutualistic, parasitic, or commensal in nature [4][5]. Others define it more narrowly, as only those relationships from which both organisms benefit, in which case it would be synonymous with mutualism.[6][7][8]

Symbiotic relationships included those associations in which one organisms lives on another (ectosymbiosis, such as mistletoe), or where one partner lives inside another (endosymbiosis, such as lactobacilli and other bacteria in humans or zooxanthelles in corals). Symbiotic relationships may be either obligate, i.e., necessary to the survival of at least one of the organisms involved, or facultative, where the relationship is beneficial but not essential to survival of the organisms. Its like I just got in trouble from a teacher! hahahaha. I put up that pic mostly because its funny. It looks like the starfish is passed out under a tree getting some shade. If it doesn't work with the POTM contest then ignore it.

Just remember this all for fun and to promote photography. I'm just happy people are participating. I agree sometimes the pictures don't always match the topic exactly but in the end you can vote for whomever you want so what does it really matter?

Just try and enjoy the pictures, if things get too far out there I will take care of it.

I was only joking around. I thought it was funny. It reminded me of when I was in school and I did something dumb and the teacher would tell me otherwise!!!!:mrgreen:. I just don't take things a serious as others. But I still love Canreef and appreciate constructive criticism.

Well, these are my two clowns guarding their anemone while it eats. (that's why it's shrivelly) I tried to get a pic of them feeding it but they are too fast! I think I will submit the 2nd one.
