and i continue on, WHY??????
some may remember it was about a year ago that i whined and complained to you guys that i had a wicked bout with dinos that wiped ALOT of stuff out. well just with my luck almost a year later it happens again. this time its not dinos it was a change in salt. why i switched i still have no clue. i went from IO to seachem reef salt and after the bucket was done and i just started the second one disaster hit and has been continuing. i'm doing my best with tons of water changes but with summer and what not its hard to find the time. i took pics tonight to vent to you, but i will not put comparison pics up to what the colonies used to look like because then it would really bum me out.

Are you sure it wasn't the heat?
This hobby can really try your patience sometimes. |
Colin really sorry to hear about your losses. Have you figured out what it is that is causing it? I use Seachem as well and have had some losses myself but I also just switched to a new bigger tank and kinda owned it to that.
|
heat is not the issue, i have central air the temp rarely changes. the only thing changed is the salt. i've tested for everything i can and everything seems ok although the CA and ALK were high because of the salt
|
That really really sucks. I say go back to your old salt, and see what happens.
|
OMG!!! I am SO sorry to hear about this! I have a pit in my stomach as I scroll through your pictures. Like so many of us, I have been there and there is no way to describe the feelings you go through with stuff like this.
Best of luck to you...I've admired your corals for some time now and hope that you are back to making us all jealous again very soon! |
Oh Colin! How very awful. You went through so much last year and now this??? How horrible! Your's was a tank I LOVED!
Hmmm strange though...I use Seachem exclusively and have for over a year with no problems....... |
Some of those corals look the same as mine  .
I know what your going through I'm still having some issues with my tank that started in dec. I never changed salt brands though, in my case it happened after I treated the tank with inteceptor. |
So sorry to hear this man.. that sucks. This is weird a guy i talk to actually had a bucket of salt (ATI) go bad and his mag levels were VERY low after mixed with RO/DI. He kept dosing mag and always had troubles getting it to be where it should be at and eventually crash. After he tested his mag it was only 475..his frag tank mag was 875 and his DT was 1200 (added mag in top off). It's a really good thing to check once and a while your salt levels when doing WC's..this is the second time i've heard of this happen because of salt.
|
OMG I feel so bad for you!
I switched to Seachem Reef salt 12 months ago and havent had any problems. Did this come on slowly or just Bam!? That just sucks! |

Sorry to hear about your losses. If there is any consolation, most of us have pieces of the corals you've lost, so you can get them back again! |
I still have a piece of that Kryptonite green candycane. Let me know if you need a frag back.
|
sorry to hear that. Your tank was soooo nice.hopfully things will change for the better sooner than later.
|
IMHO the biggest SPS killer excluding bugs, disease etc is fluctuating alkalinity or alkalinity that has dropped or has risen rapidly. Let me guess you are using a Salifert alkalinity test kit to monitor your alkalinity?
|
That really sucks!!!! I feel bad for you, it really hurts when you loose one nice coral never mind a lot of nice ones  I guess we keep continuing on for the love of the hobby and the hope for things to get better.
|
Holey cow!! Thats terrible. I had the same experience the first time I tried Seachem, burned corals. Mine wasn't quite so drastic though and I immediately switched back. I even found Seachem was ok if I mixed equal parts with IO but I'll never use it on its own.
LMK if you want any donations to help get you back on your feet, I can ship you some stuff  |
Colin, that is some scarey recession. Are you sure it is just the salt? Nothing got dropped in by children? stray voltage? etc? How many water changes did you do with the bad salt batch? How long since you switched to a better salt after you noticed the problem? What salt are you using now? Have you tried dosing sponge power to see if it will help what's left alive heal faster?
|
Hey Colin,
SO sorry to see this happen to you... We are currently using Seachem as well and haven't had any negative side effects yet. Hopefully you can get this figured out soon and get back on track. Please let us know if there's anything we can help you out with and if you would like some frags once this is all over with. |
Oh My God Colin I'm sad to see such devastaion.
I've heard of problems when switching salts before but I've never seen it this bad. J |
Colin really sorry to hear about your losses.
I have often thought of changing my salt (Instant Ocean) but i have never had the courage. I certainly will never think twice about it now. Keep us posted as to any other ideas you come up with about the cause. Tom R |
The pictures are depressing and certainly show that your colonies are pretty upset; however, I almost guarantee the destruction you see is a result of the high borate alk from the Seachem, the shift was to fast or the ALK test was not accurate. Why change something that works? Instant Ocean is good salt! I have often thought about changing salt but in the end never went through with it. Everyone’s reef and all the inhabitants get used to the chemistry of the tank regardless of the salt that is used, when a change comes to quickly is when disaster happens.
I also agree with Snappy, ZEOvit sponge power would be an excellent choice to help these corals heal but I would also add Coral Snow. Coral Snow doubles as a transporter or carrier of elements, within our water composition, easing their absorption [incorporation] by our corals as well as causing the skimmer to skim out extra toxins etc from the water column. Coral Snow has facilitated both of these functions very well for me. Apart from one of the colonies you pictured that had obvious tissue necrosis, I believe given a little time and the right counter measures you will once again have a beautiful tank. Here is a list of exactly what I would do should this situation happen to me, take it or leave it.:mrgreen: All dosages are formulated considering your water volume including your sump. Am I correct that you water volume is about 440 gallons? ~ Mix 18ml of ZEOvit Coral Snow with 18 drops of Sponge power. (Helps deliver elements to the coral more efficiently) Also add ZEOvit Coral Vitalizer 18drops per day alternating mixing with coral snow. These supplements all can be used on a non ZEOvit tank with excellent results. ~Let mixture stand for 5 mins then dose into high flow are of tank or sump. Do not turn off skimmer. Tank will cloud heavily for 2-3 hours. ~Change Carbon once every two weeks for the first month. Then once a month after. ~5% water change per week, any more than this may shift ALK too quickly. Sounds like you have already changed lots of water. ~Reduce photoperiod a couple of hours if possible for a couple of weeks. ~Adjust skimmer to skim very wet. ~Test for stray voltage ~Test for copper (never know!) Confirm RO/DI TDS is ZERO! Adjust water parameters to as close to NSW values as possible ALK 7.5-8.5 DKH SG 1.025-1.026 Temp 78-82 minimal fluctuation K+ 380 (potassium) CA 380-420 MG 1325-1500 ppm PH 8.0-8.3 Nitrate 0-15 ppm Po4 0 !! I would be happy to give you some frags should you need to replace any colonies that won't make it. Let us know the progress. Details on products recommended by snappy and I. CORAL SNOW For small polyp and large polyp stony corals, soft corals and clams as well as problem solving/solution in a salt water tank. Coral Snow is a liquid secondary biological facilitator for elements like B-Balance or Potassium-Iodide/Fluoride Concentrate. Compatibel with all elements, also for Amino Acid and Vitalizer. Coral Snow contains among others a natural Calcium-Magnesium Carbonate mix. With just 2.5µ Coral Snow has an optimal size for absorption by SPS corals. We dose Coral Snow daily with another element each. The dosage can be put into a glass together with another product, mixed and after about 5 min. slowly into the streaming of your tank. You can dose 1 to max. 4 ml Coral Snow per 100L/25gallons tank water daily. Coral Snow neutralizes undesirable acids and is a solution against e.g. slime algae and cyano bacteria. Therefore take Corals Snow and add 1 drop of ZEObak per 100L/25 gallons tank water each 2nd day. The cloudiness in the water is harmless for all fish as well as sensitive corals. SPONGE POWER Enhanced growth of sponges and sea squirt support their water cleaning character and thus water quality significantly. SPS corals get longer colored growing tips. Especially purple is enhanced on all SPS. The recovery of harmed corals is highly improved. Dosing: 1 drop for 25 gallons or 1 ml for 500 gallons daily. |
HOLY CRAP! Colin, that's Terrible. I've admired your tank so much. I hope you can get it back on track soon. I've used IO salt from day 1 and have sometimes thought of switching brands. Maybe not a good idea.
Good Luck and chin up! |

I agree with this 100% and it's what I would also recommend. Colin, what salt are you using now? |
i'm back to IO
|
Great Post Oceanic, I've often heard of borate issues with salt but was unaware it was that bad in Seachem. I thought with Seachen salt we had found a new alternative high end salt.
Again sorry for your losses Colin. J |

Instant Ocean is a very good salt; however, I do add magnesium to the fresh batch before it goes into my tank. Instant Ocean is also low in potassium and needs to be supplimented especially when running ZEOvit or Fauna Marin. I don't change anything I do with my tank if it proves to be working. Why fix it when it ain't broke? |
^^ Love that bird in your sig..
Sorry to the OP for your heavy losses. I hope you can get back to how it was. |
today was a rough day. i've dreaded cutting out the dead pieces and i finally did it. didnt think it would bother me as much as it did. some of these colonies were bigger than my 2 fists. pics will explain better......
FTS before http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n.../DSC021892.jpg FTS after http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n.../DSC027831.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...h/DSC02776.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...h/DSC02777.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...h/DSC02778.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...h/DSC02779.jpg |
I really feel for you. I remember pulling out my own buckets of dead SPS, and wanting to cry. Its tough, and I hope everything starts to come back for you with the change in salt.
|
Ouch. I too have been there with the bucket full of carnage, so I know what you're feeling (and smelling). Hope things bounce back...
|
OMG that is a depressing sight! i really feel for you.
|
OMG for TOTM to tragidy of the month
Let me know if you need any frags to cheer you up. I'll put some aside for you J |
First off....this thread scares the ^%*%%# out of me!!!
Second...that smell. Oh man, I dislike that smell. Hang in there man. |

tank troubles.
Hey Colin, you and I have both had tank disasters within the same month.
It's a good hard kick to the "beets" but, like any kick to the beets it will start to feel better sooner or later. I tried to look at it as making room for all the pieces that I really want. My tank has turned around now so if you want any free frags let me know. Sorry man! PS. I don't know if it will make you feel better but I deleted all photos off of my computer so I would not have to watch the slide show. Keith. |
