This will make you think about
where you stick your hands!!!!!! I did a water change today & also changed some Zeolights when I was putting my reactor together I could not find the the thumb screw. I looked every where, so I thought it fell under my reactor in the sump. I pulled out my reactor & seen something move I grabbed my trusty scraper & this huge worm moved I said holy $%#@ wtf is that thing. I caught it & moved it to my QT tank & took some pictures. Its about 2 feet long & about 1.5 inch's wide. Sorry for the poor quality but the lighting really sucks in that tank. have a look, & becarfull where stick your hands you never know whats there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What type of worm is it?

BTW the thumdscrew was on the shelf where I put it & now that I have this huge thing what do I do with it????
As much as I like worms, I wouldn't knowingly keep a sucker that big in my reef tank.
It might make a cool pet in its own little tank though...for somebody who isn't me  |
I think its a type of Eunicid worm. Its no longer in my sump I have him my QT tank. Heys a nasty looking thing!
Wow, dude. That's insane. I actually pulled my bare feet out from under the desk when I saw it, as if an identical worm was lurking under the desk, ready to eat my feet. Haha.
No idea on the ID. |
Ewww, If I get somehing like thta in my tank, and the wife finds out, no fishies for us, thats for sure.
That is one big worm. Just one question.......How long has that plant been in quarentine? It's looking kind of stiff!!

I'd keep him as a pet, what does he eat? You could call him Spike! |
LOL Spike! The plants are fake, my wife insisted on them for the QT tank for the fishes. I think they eat most anything.
Dude, that thing is insane. Put some ghost shrimp in and see if there is predatory behaviour!
Ya know....
That thing is almost cool looking-in a freakishly, odd, icky sort of way...
:crazyeye: |
I'd keep that one!! He's AWESOME!!!
that image will forever haunt my dreams
Ugh creepy! I remember when I fished mine out of the rock, or rather Ken (scavenger) did it for me. I was across the room totally grossed out. Thank goodness for fish friends!!
The only good thing I can say about it is that it has some nice opalecent colouring.
That is one scary looking worm, i hope i dont have nightmares
I like him ... in a creeped out sort of way. Amazing how big he is and the spikes are pretty scary. I would set up a small tank just for him (shudder).
Worm vs. Mantis in the Octogon....
I would love to see that fight!! ill bring the beer haha.
wow that thing is pretty nasty, in a cool kinda way!!
I do believe it's a eunicid of some sort.
They can grow a fair bit bigger than the beauty that you've got if you leave him be: http://www.oregonreef.com/sub_worm.htm |
It is Eunicid of some type. Without identifying the species, it is impossible to say how large it could get. I think they are incredibly common hitchikers. In fact, I've never had rock that did NOT have a few.
Mostly they are opportunistic feeders that will eat anything they can grab. I kept a similar looking one for many years that was vegetarian. He was called "Max". |
Do you have a sump? I think he's destined for sump-or-refugium-life....unless you've had no problems with fish or coral loss so far?
He would be really cool to have in a species tank.
I got a 60g sump but I also have a 30g QT tank running all the time so I may just keep him in there for now till I figure out what to do with him. I don't plain on getting ride of him, yet!

I just saw one of these in my tank today. I tried to take a pic but as soon as it heard my camera's lense motor, it shot back into its cave. I read that it can retreat at 20feet/second.
http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-04/rs/index.php "Contraction back into a burrow has been clocked in excess of 20 feet per second, and if only a couple of feet of the worm are visible while it is foraging, that worm can disappear, quite literally, in the blink of an eye." There's a picture of one in the above article where the author named it Max. I wonder if it's Untamed's pictures? |
That's the most disgusting thing I have ever seen....I physically gagged.
That makes me think twice when I stick my hand in my tank now. Yuk
I want one...
Can I ask how you caught the thing? I have many hideous visuals in my mind. It looks like it could wr itself around your arm when you grabbed it, and a net does not seem doable. Cool creature, but I am disturbed to think they can live in a tank wothout being noticed.

That thing is awesome, kinda reminds me of my centipede. |
That was definately a Eunicid worm in your tank, do a search on reefcentral a guy caught one 6ft long that was feeding on his mushrooms. It lived in the pvc pipes he used as a plenum under his sand he took some INSANE pics.
