Finely some days off. Hope I can get some water in this thing before Wednesday. I have to get things changed over the 46 is leaving this week for it's new home.
|
Well got a couple hours in tonight. here are the updates -
Main overflow http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05245.jpg http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05251.jpg Close loop http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05250.jpg |

Looking good.
|
Comin' along nicely!
|
Great progress. I too am in the process of setting up a 90. I just started this week so am nowhere near as far along. I'll keep an eye on this thread and see what tips I can pickup from you.
|
Thanks guys. Good news, bad news I have water in the tank. (good) I have a leak (bad).
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05255.jpg Hmmm guess I should have put some teflon tape on the bulk head, Leak Test /Fail. I'll fix that later. |
|
leak fixed
|
Well I managed to get water in the tank. After I fixed the leaky bulk head I added a Mag 5 to the mix and ran a test of the rest of the plumbing.
Fairly happy with the results, everythings doing what it's designed to do. I'm hoping that the Mag 18 won't be too much pump for the 1.5 drain. If the drain pipe can't keep up I can go back to the Mag 5 and use the Mag 18 on the closed loop. Like my sump? http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05257.jpg Drilled and plumbed the reservior tank http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05258.jpg http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05256.jpg |
I really like the side-storage you have made there.
I'm trying to find a way to fit a topoff reservoir AS WELL as my water change mixing tank under my stand. Would love to do what you've done but I'm going open-top and it'd look a bit funny. Looking forward to seeing more. |
This is just like I want to build for my 95. Do you have more detail on the construction and supply list?

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...ntopdesign.jpg I have thought about an open top even while I was building this stand, I guess I just need another 90 gal. (don't tell my wife) |

My stand has a footprint of 72x30 which is pretty decent.
I have just over 3 feet of vertical space to work with as well so I am planning on having a topoff reservoir feed into my sump and a waterchange tank too where saltwater can mix. I'm imagining a tank similar to that vertically oriented one in the back of Gold's that they use as water storage. The topoff will grav feed since it's higher up in my stand. The water change tank will need to be lower though to allow me to get salt mix into it. So this water will be on a switched pump that i turn on to replace water that i drain out during a change. My last tank had the RO/DI constantly feeding my topoff float valve but I have read in too many places that this can lead to the water not truly being pure. Better to have a solenoid/timer and just run it for a while. |
few things,
-first your first drawing, looks like the overflow goes into you reservoir then to the sump and still see on your plumbing, still does with a valve, wondering why -doesn't appear you have an overflow box just a straight standipe, again with a valve. Can understand the valve to backup the flow over the standpipe for noise (Herbie) would just caution running without a backup or emergency drain -in the drawing you refer to a CL, technical correct as is closed but usually referred as a return manifold. CL for aquariums seems to be more the drain and return at the same head. |

I decided to "T"ed the flow to the sump and reservior for more control. I'm not sure about my fimal use for the res, it might feed the surge or I might run marco, or even live rock. regardless I thought if I "T"ed I would be able to have greter options later. The valve on the stand pipe is simply there for shut the over down when I work on lower part of the plumbing. again a control issue. Not shown in the drawing the CL will have a "T" to the sump that can be used as a emergency drain. And regarding the CL or Manifold Return the drawn might not be as representational as it needed to be http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...0gal/cldia.jpg I'll let you decide what it's called but I'm building one of these, closed loopy manfrotto things :) I find that drawings sometimes get in the way of life, so I use them as a guideline for jumpstarting creative. But thanks for your comments I need those to keep the creative in check |
Just trying to understand things as not above taking someone else's ideas for my own use.
Having the overflow going into the reservoir, might have an issue of detritus settling out. I've tee'd off one of my drains into a separate refugium and since no filter sock, skimmer etc and BB, know it builds up so forced to siphon it out everyone and a while. Reason asking about the standpipe is am interested in running a Herbie without an overflow chamber. Like the idea so I've played around with a 33g and a 1" bulkhead and seemed to work okay. Biggest thing was getting the height of the standpipe correct so the water level was where I wanted it. With only ~230gph found I had to have the standpipe 2.875" lower than the bottom of the trim (final level was going for). I had suface agitation and still worked okay but nothing like a surge device. |

I do plan on running a filter sock as well but I don't know where, the reservior sounds like a good place. on my test with a full load of water the noise level was great, When I spoke with Mike at Hidden Reef he felt that the 1.5 inch pipe would be large enough to eliminate any noise issue without having to install some type of silencer. It works well, but like I said that was with a Mag 5, not the Mag 18 I plan on using. |
A few updates-
Attached pond liner to the underside and back of the stand to prevent any water or salt damage to walls and cartpet under tank. wife really liked this idea, she even help move the tank onto the liner and stapled the back piece. http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05260.jpg http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05261.jpg http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05263.jpg Filled the tank with ro water. http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05265.jpg http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05268.jpg The sign of a build going well http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05269.jpg Does anyone else have issues keeping things tidy in the work shop?.:) |
Lots of problems here, you have to run the gauntlet to get anywhere in our place now. Although we have less pop cans, but more beer bottles. :D
I like how your build is going. |

Good place for them! Ours wander freely around the house, occasionally found plotting against us in groups of 6, and most often found in the fridge.
Will you be doing a similar aquascape in your new system? |
Yes Mich,
The aquascaping will be quite simlar to my 46 bow but with much more open space and a little more hieght |
swap those coke cans for diet pepsi and my stand build looks almost exactly like that!

Today's updates
Salt went in http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05274.jpg http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05275.jpg Sump went under http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05276.jpg |
Getting close to the finish fo the tank. Everything transfered nicely, no deaths. Just started the aquascaping and am waiting of new lights and mag 18 from chwkreefer this weekend.
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05294.jpg |
Been a bit since my last post but here are the updates. Added PFO lighting and mag 18 return. (Thanks Chwkreefer) Moved Mag 5 to the closed loop. Cleaned up electrical and added shelf. At the same time installed 92 inch screen and LCD projector. Still chasing a leak in the closed loop and battling with a leak in the top trim. Started work on the front of the stand.

Where did you find those wee little power bars? Great looking tank btw.

Finals started on the final stage. As with all my DIY plans change, ideas come to me in mid project. I decided not to make the stereo stand part of the fish tank stand, since it would limit my access to the back of the tank.
Update: I have been battling a trim leak for months now and finally just shortened my stand pipe. Leak Gone:mrgreen: Here are some pic from this morning. Enjoy:turn-l: http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05321.jpg http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05320.jpg http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05322.jpg http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05323.jpg Now the paint and hardware. Hopefully I can make it look 1000 years old in a couple days. |
That is a slick looking stand! Nice work.
|
Still a bit more to do but heres an update. After an afternoon of distressing and painting. Before & After
http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05321.jpg http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...l/DSC05326.jpg |
nice work. cant believe you did that all yourself that is alot of work. i like the idea of your tank being offset in your stand and having all that space beside it.
SHARK BAIT OH HA HA. i love that movie its one of my favourites. maybe you could get a few close ups up your tank dwellers. |
