Best Macro Lens for Canon EOS 40D?

Can anyone recommend a macro lens for the Canon EOS 40D?

I want to get those cool close up coral shots & also to do 'pack' shots of bakery items (yes my g/f bakes!).

I've been looking at this one & this one.

Main thing I'm looking for is short minimum focal distance & wide F-Stop range.

Any ideas?

ps. Michika sorry I'm mirroring your Nikon lens!

Your looking for this lens:

Way better quality for the money than buying a Canon lens.

Looks good.

18-50mm for not a lot more than Canon's fixed 50mm & a slightly closer min focal distance.

A definite contender.

Thanks Rob.

We use that lens as our everyday lens on our Rebel XT, the shots are gorgeous! The only downside is that for aquarium macro shots a 100mm plus focal length would get you closer, if you want a dedicated macro lens. On the other hand the quality has been so good I don't have a problem with cropping.

This is my next lens

Nice!

That's tempting too!

Do you have any pics taken with your 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC MACRO?

This is my everyday lens - http://www.bccamera.com/index.php?ma...roducts_id=315

Not bad but I find it difficult to get close enough & still be able to focus correctly.

This is about as 'macro' as I can get with this lens...

About 25-ish cm focal distance zoomed to 200mm.

I want that shrimp (about 2cm's in size) to fill the frame if possible!

You gotta get the 150mm then!! And get the 2X tele-converter while you're at it.

Showed that lens to my wife and she says to get it... damn, now I have to control myself! We've been spending way too much money on camera equipment in the last year

Here's a few cropped shots

Man I wish my g/f was as understanding about camera gear!

If my she says to go get it, I'd be off to Broadway Camera in a second!

I think I might get the Sigma Teleconverter & see how it goes from there.

I'll probably use need it whether I buy a new lens or not.

A 150mm macro would be very nice...

It's the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC Macro.

You need a good 150mm macro lens to take pictures of bakery items. The teleconverter will only work was an APO lens.

I have the canon 100 if we get together some time you are welcome to try it.
I heard good things about the Sigma 90 it is supposed to be a good lens.
As far as the teleconverters I was told they are not worth the money it more or less is the same as cropping after. Either way you go Sigma Canon all the lenses mentioned here are good in my opinion. You just need $600+ dollars.

Speaking from a camera salesmans point of view, meaning i love cameras not money, i think the canon 100mm one is the best for the buck, tamron and sigma arnt bad but for a little extra money, the canon is the way to go.

Tarolisol 04-11-2008 06:22 AM

i hate the way the tamron and sigma focus.

I've used the 100mm Marco. It's a sweet lens. If I owned a DSLR it would be my #1 pick

macro Pics

Well, I finally got off my *** & hired a macro lens! :)

It's a Sigma 105mm.

I think when I buy one I'll buy a 150mm Macro.

They could use a little Photoshop work to punch them up but here's the pics.
