Ok....is it just me
I just looked at the "Who's Online" at the top right of the main page, " There are currently 58 members and 236 guests on-line" for a total of 294 online.
Seems like a odd ratio, if I recall correctly other sites have just a few guests. Ah...never mind, it's just me. Games back on. |
So where are our quests spending their time while on the site. Many sites restrict the access of quests.

I noticed that today too actually! Seems kind of odd

I noticed an hour or so ago every one of my buddies where online. LOL

If you click on the currently active link you can see what everyone is looking at (if you don't know). |

I see a lot of them are looking at the "for sale or trade" threads and DIY stuff...are they all random hits from search engines?
IE: Larry-Bob from Hamilton ontario types in "skimmer FS canada" |
I'm not trying to dwell on the stupid but....it seems wrong to me that there were five times as many guests as members and always way more guests than members.
I'm sure that some stumble across the site as you mentioned Keri and if you use invisible mode it probably puts you as a guest. I wonder if there is anything that CR can do to get people to sign up and participate? I know some sites restrict access to guests like Tom mentioned but that won't necessarily get people participating. Maybe a monthly draw of the new members that month for a gift certificate from a sponsor's store and things like that. Oh well...I guess I should of spent this time on my tank cleaning or something... |
I think restrictions is a good idea. not to all threads but to such as DIY and the Bazaar (trading Post). just my opinion. maybe not the diy but defitnitly the Buy/Sell/Trade Posts. If for no other reason but to have a better idea of who you are dealing with.
I have been burned on a RO unit here. new to site at the time and was looking. it works ok i guess but the waste is 30 times the good water. no valves or anything to adjust. unfortunatly this makes it unusable to me as i dont have a drain and tap i can commit to it. this ^ is off topic a bit but it just supports the idea of people needing to be members to trade. if i had taken time out to get to know the people on this site it might not have happened. All IS MY OPINION LIKE IT OR NOT!!!!!! ps i always see more guests than members... there must be links to our diy and such elswhere. i have posted the DIY on Absolute REEF to Find out it is a sister site. |
I like the idea of only being able to post in the bazaar if you're a member with more than a coupla posts under your belt. Say minimum 5 or 10 posts...
That'll stop people registering, selling something off & then disappearing off the face of the planet. Kinda keeps things in the Can Reef 'community'. Although, it might restrict the size of the potential audience for the sponsors & sellers I guess... . |
FYI if you are on only as a guest it means you can look at other peoples posts, but you can not post anything yourself. You do not get to post until you become a member.

:biggrin:I think what VFX was saying is that you should possible have it so that a new member must start or respond to a few threads rather than joining, selling off something and then dissappearing. In other words just using the site as a buy+sell or a craigslist. Maybe not being able to go into the classified for say a week or two after joining?? I realize that buying and selling used equipment is a nice perk but it is really supposed to be a site for Q+A and support from other reef fanatics. I know it has been great for me, I have picked up so much information and have had some great suggestions for my system. Much more than the LFS would ever give me. So maybe a new member should still be on a trial basis?? Glad its not my decision..

What I am talking about is people not joining in the first place, you can't post questions, comments or sell anything if your a guest.
The topic of selling restrictions for new member has been well covered in the past and always ends up at the same place. I think CanReef wants to encourage board participation not restrict it. That's basically what I was talking about but I think from lack of participation in this thread shows it's not a issue. IMHO...out. |

As for the having x number of posts before you can sell stuff, I think we've tried that before and end up with a bunch of random posts, then they sell their stuff and leave. Either way it doesnt' matter and people will find their way around the system. As for people not joining, I've been told that people get very apprehensive about posting their first post. Many feel a bit intimidated I suppose. I'm not sure where that comes from as when I joined I just jumped right in and started asking questions. I guess I'm just not shy  I think the large number of "guests" is actually various bots or some sort of automated things from google and yahoo and stuff. Maybe Titus could chime in here and fill us in. |

Whats wrong with guests, I say let people look and learn as much as they want, if they want to participate they will but theres no reason we should restrict knowledge to those who think they deserve it.
|
90%+ of those guests are Spam Bots. They troll forums, looking for email addresses and such posted in threads to spam the owner to death. Website links and other things too. Google spam bot is real bad for trolling. One of me Firebird forums, we can see which bots are searching what. Kinda interesting what big buisness will do to spy on peoples internet habbits

Sometimes my login won't stick on this site and I just browse as a guest instead of logging in.
