Found this critter in my tank tonight. Does anyone know what it is?

im not sure as to an ID. but usually if a crab has dark/black claws then it is usually considered "not reef safe". im sure there are exemptions to that rule though :)

Where did you find the crab/what was it on coral or in the rockwork? It almost appears to be an acro crab of some sort just my 2cents
|
When the lights are on, he was hiding in the rocks. When the lights went off, I found him on the underside of my monti.
|
yea looks like an acro/monti crab. good for corals
|
It doesn't look like a acro crab to me. Most acro crabs I have ever had or seen never leave the acro they came in on. Never have seen one in the rocks except to move to another coral. This is a poor picture of one.

This crab has never been on the Acro that I know of. Mostly in the rocks.

Here's the same Mystery Crab one month later. Finally caught him. Anyone want to buy him REAL cheap (like free). I'm East of Edmonton (30 minutes)and probably could keep him safe and alive overnight.

well..... i have no idea what that is....good job on catching it!

Those claws look like bad news to me.
|
I have one of those (or looks suspiciously like it) in my tank too. No damage seen on any of my corals (that looks crab related anyways, and I've had coral eating crabs so I can tell ). I caught him eating algae the other day, no opportunity to spear him or anything, ahem I mean catch him and put him in a more appropriate environment  I'm keeping an eye on him but so far I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. However, if the opportunity arises he's a goner.
|
I had/have one like that too but more hair. I was aware of this guy for quite a while in my tank. Up till a few weeks ago he did not touch one single sps. One day I saw him snacking on a tricolor and a staghorn...so I caught and he lives in the fuge

Those claws look a lot like the claws of an emerald crab. To my eye, they look like they have flat pinching surfaces. If that is the case, this is likely a beneficial crab.
