Most recent FTS (Apr 15):
http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...pril152009.jpg ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Original posting: I've purchased some corals in the last few months. Here's a collection of some old, some new. :) Feedback much appreciated...good or bad, I don't care. LOL! Looks good Myka! That Favia looks really nice. And love the Gorgonian, might have to get me one. What type and color of lighting are you useing in that tank?
|
that is a wicked gorg
|
Thanks guys! I'm pretty stoked on the gorg...hoping I can feed it enough to survive without polluting my tank! It is non-photosynthetic...so it may be an uphill battle.
The lighting is one 39w Giesemann Pure Actinic, and one 39w Giesemann Midday. They're 8 months old now too, so I need to replace. |
Great shots Myka. Really like the Gorg just like everyone else. Excellent Favia too!
|
Wow, those are some nice looking corals. Looks Great
|
Awesome shots! I like the Gorg, and the top down hammer shot. Nice work, looks great!
|
Thanks for all the comments everyone!
The Favia is actually a top down shot too...and I shoulda blown the sand off it before I took the photo! Dang Hector's Goby always sifts sand all over the place. My Lobo is going through color changes since I got it a few months ago...not sure how it's going to turn out. It was kind of a rust red color whenI bought it, and now it's leaning towards a pinkish red. Well, you guys all know where to get the Gorgonian from! ;) |

Nope, that's the Fox coral. The descriptions are above each photo. Fox corals don't need very much light to survive...mine is in a cave completely shadowed by my rocks.
|
Amazing. The gorgonia and the Fox are totally increadable.
I'm a Total SPS head but WOW those are some Great pieces J |

Very cool favia.
Question, are you feeding your blasto to help it recover? I used reef roids to nurse a frag back to health and still have it to this day. Well worth the $$$ IMO. |
Love the nipples !

Thanks for all the comments everyone! I really like the Fox coral too. It is very subtly pretty. Has awesome bluish hues.

I fed all those things and couldn't keep similar gorgonians alive.
Blastos are major chunk eaters. If you can prevent someone else from stealing it, the blasto will eat major chunks of seafood, as well as formula pellets. |

Good to know about the Blastos! I didn't get a chance to feed them lastnight. I'll try right now, but the lights aren't on yet. Not sure if they'll feed in the dark or not...? |
I think I'm going to lose those Blastos...they are receding even worse, and I get get them to eat anything. Their mouths gape open all the time, and don't ever close even when touched. I put some pellets in their mouth holes lastnight, but the coral didn't react at all.
|
*grumble* Time to cut down the feeding. Getting HA. Sorry Gorg, but it's not lookin good for ya! :(
Oh, and the Blastos that I bought all receded - they kicked the bucket. Risky buy...shouldn't have wasted my money. |
Color comparison...I thought was interesting.
Lobophyllia (from Pet City) on Jan 11, when I first got it: http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...s/IMG_0023.jpg Lobo today (3 1/2 months later). I wonder if my lights aren't strong enough for its preference: http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...Apr2720083.jpg My Duncan (from J&L Aquatics): http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...Apr1720085.jpg My newest fishy addition, a True Perc (RIP...didn't acclimate): http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...r2720082-1.jpg |
I just noticed it has been one year to the day since I made the first post of this thread. Funny I decide to look back at it today! Time for some update photos I should say! I notice also that I haven't changed my rockwork since these photos...holy jebus - that's amazing, I left it alone for a full year?!!
I am receiving a frag shipment from Wicked Frags tomorrow, so I should have some photos of them (sent to me since I'm in Alberta right now), but when I get home I will get onto taking some photos of my tank. =] I don't have any SPS in my tank anymore. It's all LPS and the random coverings of GSP all over the place. Oh, and I bought a purple Nepthea frag from WF. Stoked on it. I've been waiting for the perfect softie to add to the tank. I was gonna grab some nice Zoas and/or Palys, but opted out. Current corals: Purple w/ green tips Hammer Brown w/ green tips Hammer Clearish w/ white tips and green centers Frogspawn (this one has developed quite green centers over the last year, looks nice now) Red/Pink Lobophyllia Peachy/Bluish Fox Red and Green Open Brain Red Blastos Green w/ red centers Favia (now it mostly red) Greenish white Duncan Tan Bubble Greenish tan Candy Cane Brown with green tips Galaxea GSP (different sp than I've eve seen for sale anywhere else) My WF Order: Blue Ricordea Green w/ Purple Tip Frogspawn Purple Nepthea Aussie Lobophyllia (pink, purple, and green) Stars of Jupiter Cyphastrea Meteor Shower Cyphastrea Gold w/ White Tip Aussie Torch |
New pics from today. White balance is off, but it's the best I can do!! :D
New Lobophyllia from Red Coral Aquarium (Calgary, AB). http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Mar192009.jpg New Aussie Gold Torch from Wicked Frags (Ontario). Can't capture the gold coloring very well!! Arg! http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...Mar1920095.jpg 2.5 yo Open Brain from Pet City (Kelowna, BC). http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...rch1920095.jpg 1 yo (bigger one) and new (small one) Frogpawns. Big one from Interior Reef (Kelowna, BC), and small one from Wicked Frags (Ontario). The big one was clear when I bought it, and is now much greener than the photo shows. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...ar19200913.jpg |
Wow those all look great! I didn't realize at first this thread over a year old!
Maybe I'll post some pics of my tank (never have I don' think?) after I move it this weekend.. I'll make sure to take before pictures  |
Thanks! Ya, I don't think I've ever seen photos of your tank. Make a thread!! :)
The best pic I can get of my Squamosa clam from Red Coral. Oops shoulda nabbed that bubble algae before the photo shoot. :o http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...ar19200911.jpg |
We've been bugging him to make a thread for a while...I think he's hiding something...
Myka, your tank is looking great. So what did you finally decide to do once you move to Saskatoon? Are you going to use the big tank or just move the smaller one? |
I'm switching it all into the 40g not the 75g...various reasons. I will PM you. I don't think nazerine even HAS a tank!!! I've never seen any evidence. ;)

We can have frags swaps soon at my new place and everyone can come over. New place = huuuuge. |
I got a new camera. Canon G7. Takes much nicer pics than my old camera.
My new favourite coral; Aussie Gold Torch from Wicked Frags: http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...Mar2720097.jpg Finally a pic of my Squamosa from Red Coral Aquarium in Calgary: http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4.../Mar272009.jpg New RBTA from Pet City in Kelowna: http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...Mar2720095.jpg Yuma from fellow CanReefer: http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...Mar2720096.jpg Green w/ purple tips frogspawn from Wicked Frags (much greener than the camera picked up): http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...Mar2720099.jpg Blastos from Red Coral in Calgary: http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...Mar2720094.jpg Ricordea from Wicked Frags (busy splitting so it looks kinda funny): http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...Mar2720092.jpg |
Hey that Yuma is looking great!!!

|

Another shot of my favourite model (hard to get the gold color to show up in photos since it's a gold fluoresce): http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...ar2720097a.jpg |
FTS!!!
Sorry Myka, but we need one. Plus, how else are we other 33 gal owners supposed to get aquascaping ideas? |
Your gorg is gorgeous! What type is it?

Got a couple new corals today. A Hammer that's off to the left and isn't open yet, and a rock with a few different types of Blastos that pretty much dead centre, but they aren' in very good shape, so hopefully they will perk up. :)
I have done a few things differently in my tank lately. Mainly upgraded to 2x250w DE MH with 2x39w T5s, and also started dosing the ZeoVit Nano Power pack. The Pohl's Xtra and Amino Acid LPS both ran out 10 days in (why they wouldn't use bigger bottles for these one so they last a decent amount of time is beyond me). I have been daily dosing the Sponge Power and Coral Vitalizer. With these two changes on the tank I have noticed a dramatic difference in the Valonia. It is disappearing!!! *happy dance* Also, my rock which has been rather white "forever" (the tank is 2 years 4 months old) for no reason I can figure out has started to darken up. I can't really say what is happening, but it just overall looks darker which is awesome!! So, I can finally get a FTS! When the rocks were whiter they would throw the white balance off and my photos would come out "bleached", and I couldn't figure out a way to get decent shots. So, after 2 years and 4 months I am relatively satisfied with my tank, although the corals still need to grow!! So, by popular demand here is a FTS with just T5s on: http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k4...pril152009.jpg |
sweet lookin reef Myka:mrgreen:
|
nice pics!!
to get the blastos to perk up I feed them mysis 2 times a week..... as for your brain being bleached try moving it lower certain lps don't like too much light. I had a donut do the same and under 175's is starting to recover. |
Thanks for the comments guys! :D

Which brain are you talking about? The Lobo? This thread is a year old...the Lobo bleached out a bit about 6 or 8 months ago from being too close to the T5s. It's up to snuff nowadays though I think...it's hard to say how dark it's going to get, but I'm hoping it will get to be a rich blood red like some Lobos I've seen. The only coral in my tank that is bleached right now is a Hammer frag, and I have no idea why it bleached out when all the other Euphyllia around it didn't. Oh, and the new Blastos I just bought are pretty bleached out too. |
Myka I was reffering to the piece on the sand bed between the lobo and bubble but then again maybe it's just the pic....
as for blastos mine almost died a few times because it was badly neglected until it went in my sump then it got fed daily and now has 10 new heads....+1 on trying to feed them when they're closed it doesn't work maybe wait till they poof up then they accept food right away oh and speaking about off lining the skimmer, I would give it a shot your tank and corals will love it. My newly set up 50g is superhealthy without a skimmer however the WC's is relentless. All the corals seem so much more vibrant tho in my sps tank there has to be one  |
Hurray for finally defeating the bubble algae! Tank looks good! How is running skimmerless working out for you? My tank is bare bottom no skimmer  Let's hope some coraline starts growing!
