Plumbing argument

My fiance insists we can "safely" use ABS pipe or something called Bopex for plumbing our tank and I think it would be better to use pvc pipe as I am cautious. Is there a reason not to use abs or bopex on a tank?

Most powerheads, bulkheads and submersible pumps such as mag pumps are ABS. Not sure what the other stuff is though.

Der_Iron_Chef 02-05-2008 05:04 AM

ABS is perfectly safe to use. I just prefer PVC.

how about rubber hose? im thinking about starting my sump project today

I think the reason most people use PVC is that ABS is only available down to 1.5", where PVC goes down much smaller. However PVC is more expensive.

If you do go with ABS, look into cell core. It is ABS but cheaper.

Keep in mind that ABS is not really pressure rated. So if you're going to be running any kind of pressure through it, I strongly reccomend Shedule 40 PVC or for extreme pressure Schedule 80 PVC.

Anyone know anything about this bopex stuff? he is really gung-ho to use it. Says people use it for plumbing and it doesn't require fittings.

You got me curious enough to google it, but nothing...

Does he mean SpaFlex. It kinda sounds similar.

I work in plumbing wholesale so I'll see if I can find anything out about it.

You can use ABS to an extent in a tank. When ABS heats to a certain temperature (I think it's 60 or 70 celcius or so) it releases a toxic gas. Usually when using ABS in a tank it's kept to fittings and such. I think that's the reason why PVC is pottable and ABS isn't (pottable meaning safe for drinking water).

With the ammount used on a tank I just use PVC. It's not like you're plumbing an entire house with the stuff ;)

I just cannot seem to get my fiance to see my side (I am for pvc and against everything else). Anyone have some more really good reasons to use pvc and NOT use the other stuff?

Tell him PVC is really easy to use and he shouldn't be afraid of it.

just a hint to a happy life, it's good to give into the fiance every once and awhile

mr_alberta 02-05-2008 06:52 PM

PVC fittings are abundant and easier to find in 1/2" to 2" size (which is the most we typically use for small tanks like ours).

save those for when you need a "I told you so"

sharuq1 02-05-2008 07:02 PM

I just don't want to get the tank plumbed only to find it leaches something dreadful into the system later, catastrophically killing everything.

mark 02-05-2008 07:07 PM

ABS is save. Lot's of other posts on Canreef and other forums about it.

seriously can I use rubber hose to plumb my tank? this route appears to be easier than pvc

I don't believe "real" rubber is inert - it may contain additives from processing, and it will break down over time, especially with UV. I have no idea if it is problematic when it breaks down.

KrazyKuch 02-05-2008 10:13 PM

What do you mean by rubber hose....like a garden hose, then I say no but if your talking about the clear tubing that sometimes has that string mesh in it then yeah it's fine..
