there's no point in live sand if you get live rock imo.

but if you insist, get live sand from a well matured tank that has a decent history (no crashes, parasites etc.). that way you get all the fauna that lives in it. best source is a fellow reefer; most will donate for cheap as free. why go online? do you mean that "live" sand in a bag? personally, i think that's a rip and a half...

SeaSerpant 02-03-2008 09:59 PM

so just dead?

SeaSerpant 02-03-2008 09:59 PM

doesn't live sand have benefits or does it do the same thing as live rock?

justinl 02-03-2008 10:01 PM

same thing as live rock. I would just go with the dry sand in the bags. just remember to rinse it really well.

SeaSerpant 02-03-2008 10:06 PM

with tap water or does it matter?

justinl 02-03-2008 10:18 PM

yeah rinsing with tap is fine. just try to drain as much as you can out of it before putting it into the tank. it isn't super crucial though.

would the sugar sand affect anything or should i get a larger grain?

chevyjaxon 02-03-2008 11:19 PM

I bought carribian live sand to kick start my tank and of course live rock the sand is packaged wet and as long as it dosent get frozen should be pretty beneficial bought mine at big als forget what i paid though

SeaSerpant 02-03-2008 11:20 PM

sugar or less fine?

Snappy 02-04-2008 12:35 AM

I am not a fan of the fine sugar sand, it blows around too much. I use the courser stuff.

Skimmerking 02-04-2008 12:37 AM

I use the Sea chem select I love it its just right and not too light hardy any fine dust either...
