Question about closing threads

I am new to this posting thread thing. Why is it that threads are being closed? Is it the staff that can close anything they want or does someone have to complain? I read the rules and it says you have the right to close anything you want. But there was no bad language and the thread went along with "your" rules. Personally I would like to know what other people have to say about the subject. Once again, just my opinion.

Well, ya, basically we can close what we want. We have a meeting, and if we as a group determine that the thread is going downhill into arguement land, we close it. That way we don't have to come clean up at midnight, and makes everyone else's visit here more enjoyable.

And we can also delete posts that won't drop a subject, then we give people a time out.

Rhodesia 01-23-2008 11:21 PM

so what your saying is drop the subject about the guy who killed everything?

I'm saying drop it or both your accounts are banned

Rhodesia 01-23-2008 11:26 PM

Both whose accounts. I just started on here, asked a question and now you want to ban me. Ok if you are the staff then who do you go to with problems. You said you have a meeting, but I just said somthihng and you came right back. Where's the time for a meeting. You say this is a open forum to post things but banning people for speaking their mind about relevent subjects. I don't get it! I thought we are suppose to learn from people not try to shut people up that have questions about the Reef industry.

Delphinus 01-23-2008 11:26 PM

Can you honestly say that anything positive will come out of continuing to discuss it at this point?

Yes, we can close threads at our discretion. If that's what it takes to keep the tone around here at a civil level, then we'll do that. If things continue to be less than civil, then there might be an escalated response.

BTW, on a completely unrelated note, we can see the IP's where posts come from. :)

Rhodesia 01-23-2008 11:27 PM

and, what does my ip have anything to do with it.

It shows the computer you post from, and any matches of other users that post from it....

Aquattro 01-23-2008 11:31 PM

Anyhow, I've answered your question about closing threads, there is no need for further discussion on this matter. Please visit our other forums and have a more pleasant time reading about reefs and stuff. Thank you for your question and have a great visit to our board.

Rhodesia 01-23-2008 11:34 PM

I am the only one that is using this computer. Your saying that if someone else in my complex feels the same way about what was posted then you are lumping us all together as one person. I am not trying to ruffle feathers, or fins, but I really don't get how this is a open forum is "you" decide what is ok and not ok even if it goes along with your rules. Have fun with your power.

I'll be sure to just ask questions and not express my opinion...I guess.
Thanks for the info.

In being on MANY other forums, and moderators on a few, I know the need for having mods with the "Powers" many will feel that its unjust, but, the internet is people form Everywhere, all ages, all walks of life, all beliefs. If there is not some kind of hard rule, and people to enforce them, then the place gets out of hand in a real hurry. Been there, seen that.

I for one think the staff here are doing an impeccable job. There will allways be touchy subjects and sometimes misguieded judjements but thats life. Just go with the flow, and go feed your fishies. :D

Why would you think that. We just follow the policy set down for the board, which I also may say, reflects the wishes of "most" members, who wish to discuss reef related topics.

If anyone actually thinks its some type of power thingy, that we spend out free time doing, then they need to give their head a shake.

Sorry Doug, I've already removed the post as pointless.

it's the mods keeping forums like these readable, and on this forum they're actually doing a damn fine job while being much more liberal than some other forums i've been on. Everyone should be and is allowed to state their opinions but there's no point in just continually stating your opinion to bait people into an argument, it's just not a readable forum like that. If the mods didn't intervene to keep things civil, I'm sure 9 out of 10 threads would turn into pointless and petty arguments. People just seem to say things to each other on forums they would never say in real life face to face. It's kind of a subject ripe for psychological study, if you ask me, and one that pops up on all forums from time to time. Anyway.... cheers everyone, be happy instead of arguing on forums spend time enjoying and taking care of your tanks!

Der_Iron_Chef 01-24-2008 12:20 AM

The mods are great and don't enjoy lording their "power" over other members. Let it go.

Scavenger 01-24-2008 12:23 AM

I'd like to chime up about the great job done by the mods as well. They make this and enjoyable place to visit.

It seems to me that forum members on this and various sites forget they are really like guests at a party. Start arguing with other guests and the hosts (mods) may ask you to stop. If you don't you will be asked to leave. Makes sense in the real world, shouldn't it make sense here too?

trilinearmipmap 01-24-2008 12:23 AM

On a similar note, there was a recent thread expressing concern about a vendor. It turned out many people including myself had had similar concerns about the vendor. I even expressed understanding about the problems the vendor was facing while still objecting to the vendor's behaviour. If it hadn't been for that thread, I would have thought that it was just me that had problems with the vendor. No one was bashing the vendor, just recounting their experiences. It seemed a good warning for newbies to the hobby. Imagine if you were about to spend $5000.00 on aquarium equipment then you got shafted during your first tank build. All of a sudden the thread disappeared without a word about why.

Aquattro 01-24-2008 12:26 AM

Do not start the vendor thing again please. Or this thread will be going away too.

trilinearmipmap 01-24-2008 12:28 AM

Adios, I have enjoyed the information I have gotten from this forum.

Aquattro 01-24-2008 12:31 AM

Thread drifting from original question. Closed.
