Our new kitten
I have allergies to cats but love them...so I haven't had a cat in many many years...I also have issues with cat hair...EW! So what does a person do....here you go! Our new cat...he's gorgeous...BUT to each his own! We have been wanting one for over a year but have been hesitant...now we have him! They're not for everyone...you either love the look or not...

Oh my god run for your lives we've been envaded.
On a side note, those cats are very strangly cute. But id hate to be the one who has to pull out all their hair :P |
That's awesome. :) My wife's cousin breeds Mexican Hairless dogs ... they definitely are a ... um .. unique thing. In this case even more so because they still have a lock of hair on the top of their head ... so they almost have a creepy look to them. But then I imagine them speaking with a Cheech and Chong accent, so it's all good.
I always thought allergies to pets were more about allergies to dander/dandruff. So no allergies to these guys? A cat is a cat, and that is that. One thing I've noticed, they don't care if they look different. :) |

Reminds me of the hairless guinea pigs. They are definitely different looking.

It usually is a dander allergy which most people react to. There doesn't seem to be anything at all on the skin in that sense. Except oil. They do get oily because there isn't any hair...we bath them once a week. I didn't know whether I would have a problem until I went to pick him up...let's say I was crossing my fingers! When I walked in the room and there was 10 of them......I knew then because in a normal room with cats I do start to react a bit with watery eyes and such.
He does look like an alien....and a couple of times I have caught myself thinking what did I get? But he is a very cool cat...very dog like! And you're right...they dont' know they're different! |
I have to know, what is it like to pet one? Like rubbing a shaved leg? I have to admit I do like them, although I've never seen them in person.

I would think their skin would be sensitive to the sun?
|

1/3 cat, 1/3 dog, and 1/3 monkey!
Anyone with a Devon Rex can understand the monkey reference... they're quite acrobatic. Quote:

Catherine - They feel like petting velvet...if you can imagine...very very soft...but warm as there is no hair to buffer the heat to you. When you see them you think they won't be soft or nice to pet but I prefer it to a coated cat as it is sooo soft! If you don't bathe them for longer than recommended they can get an oily feel. And yes, they are sensitive to sun. You can't EVER let them outside (and for the price you pay you wouldn't let them walk out the door anyways....and being inside is sooo much safer for any cat!), and you do have to watch that they don't have window they can suntan in for long periods.
Devons!! I love them! I had one many years ago and I think that will be the second cat that we add to our house.....I like their personality alot...very dog like just like the Sphynx. Mine was fairly coated though...lots of curls. She was gorgeous. I have found a breeder in Ontario that I like...but would love to find a GOOD Devon Rex breeder closer to us! |

Think I got Some Good ONES...lol |
Here's a more recent photo of Bonnie (taken 10 minutes ago). She's pedigreed, and we bought the breeding rights. Her proposed mate Bob however isn't registered. I think they've both got Sphynx somewhere in the family tree, as I don't think either of them are going to have much for coats; what they've got is pretty sparse, but they have that soft velvety feel. I'd love to see a Sphynx in person, there's nothing better than the wrinkles :) We consider Bob to be our 'pug' cat. Nothing beats the look on a person's face the first time they see them, you can see the 'omg what's wrong with that cat' look in their eyes.

Crumm..she's really pretty!
|
I can't decide. I remember seeing one of these cats sitting in a neighbour's window once and I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. Haha.
They truly are unique, if nothing else :) |
Thanks Chaloupa, your guys are pretty cute too :)
Der Iron Chef, you need to see one in person. Everyone's first reaction is shock, but once they're over the initial reaction, they love them! |
My cousin is extremely allergic to cats, however she was wondering if she would have allergies to a hairless cat. You said that you are not allergic right? Hummm I wonder if she would be. She ended up buying a couple of finches (birds) because of her allergies to cats and dogs, however she desperately wants a cat. I'll let her know your experience. Thanks for sharing.

Devons and Sphyxes are as close as you can get to a non-allergenic cat. Our breeder is allergic to cats, and she's got 13 devon rexs, and not an issue. We have friends that come over that are really allergic to our other cats (siamese), but they can pick these guys up, hold them, cuddle them and no reaction.
|
I find them quite "hypo-allergenic" but don't know that everyone would...I would suspect that they would be the very best for a person with allergies...I couldn't believe it when I didn't react at all to over 10 cats in their house and most of them in your face wherever you are. I also usually react to cats saliva but don't with these guys. Could be coincidence though. I would recommend them....I just love them! But they do take some getting used to...and your house needs to be a comfortable temp...our guys were kept in a very very very warm house (which is not necessary) so have had to adjust over the last week to our meek 74 as compared to over 84+...they sure couldn't have reef tanks! They do well at 70-74 so a normal house...unless of course you have reef tanks and try to keep the room cool... so the tanks don't overheat!
|
Another breed to look into is the Bengal, they are claimed to be hypo-allergenic as well.Ours is a spotted bengal and has more of a pelt then cat fur.
|
I checked into the Devon Rex once, as I am allergic to cats. Since then, I've been allergy tested and am allergic to cat saliva.
Ten minutes into a room full of Devon Rex and I could barely breath. |
