90 Gallon Reef: Progress
Just a few pics to show the progress in my 90. I have almost gotten rid of the diatoms *crosses fingers*.... thank you phosban reactor.

It's beautiful I'm jealous, thats what I wanted my 175g to look like but my regal angel had other ideas :twised:
|
I really admire your tank!
How did your diatoms come to be? I'm facing the same problem right now, basically just switched out my old 90 for a new one with the same rock/sand and about 75% of the original water but I am now having a massive brown diatom bloom. I just set up the phosban reactor again to see if that helps. What was your regiment in regards to phosphate removal media replacement? |
Nice tank and those photos are so crisp.

Beautiful colors

fantastic looking tank!

My diatoms were likely the result of high phosphates. I cant say for sure, but its the most likely scenario. I think they leached from my rockwork, which came from a tank with a previously high phosphate and hair algae problem. It also probebly came from my tap water (I dont use RO/DI) and fish foods. I reccently tested I have 0 phosphates, but they are just likely leaching out of the rock as fast as my phosban can remove it. I use 250 ml of rowaphos at a time, and change it out once every 3-4 weeks. Make sure your phosban reactor is set to turn the media a good amount. I used to run rowaphos in my filter but the reactor is far more effective. Thanks for the comments everyone! :) -Diana |
The colors are great phenomenal
What kind of bulb are you running? |
Hi Diana
Your tank is looking greaaaaat. The mix of colour you get from LPS is fabulous. What kind of camera are you using? Tom R |
Kabong, I'm running a Coralife Power Compact fixture with 10,000K and actinic, as well as 2 Coralife T5 fixtures with actinic bulbs. Not anything fancy, I'd love to upgrade but I guess everything is doing ok for now.
Tom, we use a Nikon D70 DSLR with 18-70mm lens as well as a Nikkor 60mm f 2.8 macro lens. I dont think any of these shots were with the macro lens, though. Thanks again :D Cheers -Diana |
Lovely as always. I am glad the phosban reactor is getting that all cleared up. I just ordered a phosban/carbon reactor aswell i hope i see a difference :). I really need to change my rock work around i like the openness in yours.

It looks awesome. what kind of coral was with you clownfish?
|
Beautiful tank I love the mix of colours.

Thanks guys,
SeaSerphent thats a bubbletip anenome that doesn't always want to have its bubble tips.... it has split several times. I think there's 3 in there now. :D |
I have heard that anemones kill other corals. Is this true?
|
Great looking tank. Terrific colour and coral expansion.
Would be great, if you have them, to post your water parameters -- might be an inspiration for us. :) PS: Do you use ozone or uv, and how aggressive are you with carbon filtration? |
Seaserpant, anenomes do sting. And they can sting corals as they wander around the tank looking for the best place to 'live'. And in the act of stinging a coral, if the sting is severe enough, the anenome can end up killing a coral. So its tricky having anenomes in a reef tank, but once they find a spot they like they really dont move around too much. I make sure to remove any extra anenomes I have just to prevent them moving away from each other and into my corals. :)
erikages, I just did a quick test about a week ago. Nitrates- 5 (or under 10) and phosphates - 0. I tested my calcium too which was at like 600 or something, off the charts, and its a new test kit so i gotta see if its off. I really can't imagine its that high. Other than that I havent really tested anything. I'm pretty lazy when it comes to that kinda stuff.... Raf will attest to it. My corals will tell me when I need to dose and/or do a water change. I was running a UV sterilizer for a couple weeks just to combat a little ich outbreak that occurred after the addition of a couple gobies. The water just looked great after that, but since I dont have a sump the pump in the tank was an eyesore. I always run carbon, and change it out once a month. I think if my diatoms relapse then I'll throw that UV back on again. :D -Diana |
Ah shoot, posted as Raf... see above post!
